@sairamnagarajan I certainly agree! Especially when one considers that in Mozarts time the whole pitch was at least half a tone lower! So mozart himself never had in mind the "shrieking sounds" the sopranos of our days are forced to produce because some conductors "pushed "the pitch higher just to get a brighter sound in the orchestra!
Never a dull performance. The ultimate singer and the most exciting mezzo of her time......I can recount many times she walked off with the performance....She will always be missed.
In Memoriam: Shirley Verrett dead at the age of 79 years at Ann arbor, Michigan.
This acclaimed opera singer, who was known for her blazing intensity, had a career that spanned for decades. She had a very attractive stage manner and a lovely singing voice. May she rest in peace.
Her coloratura is so astoundingly good, especially for a voice of such magnitude and beauty. It was so shockingly refreshing to hear this after getting knocked out by her unbelievable "O don fatale." I still wish she hadn't transpose it down a whole step, cause I couldn't care less about the money note at the end (almost always interpolated but not originally in the score anyway!). And we all know she has the most formidable top notes, anyway.
Shirley Verett has never quite received the total acclaim she so obviously merits, in every performance--the voice, the sensitivity, the total musicality always reigning, in short as grand, noble and profound a vocal artists as any known to us!
@amkbach So true, but the musical world of today is slowly beginning to understand what we've missed - like Bjoerling and Callas she will grow in reputation every year until she is a thorough giant among singers in history...
She is one of the premiere singers of the 20th C. check out her O Don Fatale and her Lady MacBeth Sleep Walk Scene with the tricky high d-flat. She is among the best opera and concert singers ever.
I would think that her naturally smokey tone would maybe not mix as well with this piece as others would, but again she proves that she can adapt to any style.
Not the easiest choice between Amnéris, Eboli, and Dalila, Azucena. Some "haa" are a bit flat, in these lighter repertory. But she is so versatile that one admire this agilty, so very rare in heavy voices.
extrordinarily beautiful.

I didn't know that she died recently--too bad. We shall miss her. What a lovely lady and beautiful voice with a special velvet, feminine quality.

I think it actually sounds a lot pleasanter sung lower instead of the usual shrieking soprano histrionics.

After listening to this, I really dont understand why some at all care about questions such as: "Is it in the right key?".
My answer is: this is a golden magnificent key!!! for Lady Verret. Amen!
