  • This is my childhood.

  • the 1970s and 1980s version of this that went on Global were the same episodes (titled hammy the hamster) only with the creator Paul Sutherland doing the narration rather than Johnny Morris. These "further tales of the riverbank" are actually renamed reissues of the 1970s hammy hamster (which was a sequel to the 1959 b/w tales of the riverbank).

  • GP! You forgot to put on your goggles and scarf before flying!

  • How they managed to keep those hamsters still long enough is a perplexity to me.

  • WHY CAN'T I GET MY NAME IN FLOWERS??? F*ckin ROCKS!! Go GP!!!

  • not bieng mean but its rodney ( i think) :P

  • I totally used to make boats and stuff for my hamster, almost killed him a few times now that i'm looking back.

  • I don't remember this 'british version" of the show. Us kids in the 80s remember the Canadian version that included Matty the Mouse and not the name Rodrick. Anyway, that plane is bad ass. I actually wished I had a toy like that with the animals in it LOL.

  • I wish I could find episodes from the original cbc series.

  • plus the voices of the characters were different. Also the white mouse was called Matty Mouse in the one your thinking of not Rodrick. But I think its really cool how you remember the oppinions expressed....intro before. i remember that too. they did that for a lot of shows on global.

  • this was the british version, the one your talking about on global tv came on right before giligans in the evening too. I believe battle of the planets was on before it, and followed by the tom and jerry show. the narrator for the one that came on global tv in the late 70's and early 80's wasn't this one. the narrator would always finish the episode by starting to tell the beginig of a tale, and then say "but that's another story". and he had no british accent.

  • I grew up on this show, every morning on TVO (TV Ontario) and it was my favourite (still is for children's shows).

They just don't make'em like this anymore, pity.

Btw that movie coming out is everything this delightful show wasn't, and it should never have been made (way to crap on my childhood yet again Hollywood).

  • i really loved this show on animal planet at 6am every morning. but there used to be narrator with a white beard. and there are two songs i'll never forget. nuts, bolts, and witches. and "out on the water"

  • @recurvekid94 Yeah, I remember waking up that early just so I could see that show! Oh man I loved it so much. Still do.

  • i have missed these shows .beautiful brings back mmories

  • I remember this being different in the 70s. The footage in the video looks the same, but the voiceover is different. Also, the endings always had the narrator going off on a tangent describing something else happening, and then he'd stop short with '...but that's another story...'.

  • I'm not convinced the animals are actually talking.

  • yeah life would be so much better if they still made TV shows that had talking guinea pigs and hamsters flying model planes around.

  • @kingbrenty If anyone ever copied this by putting their hamster in a model plane, or floating a guineapig in a toy boat in the paddlingpool, now's the time to confess, anonymously.

  • @kingbrenty Be pretty much all it'd take to smarten humanity up as a whole, I'd say. Eeyup.

  • Its Canadian program not British

  • This was a British programme - narrated by a famous naturalist, Johnny Morris.

  • is this from britan? cause the voices are diffent?

  • I used to come home early from work and this would be on Animal Planet with no commercials.

I'd fire one up and laugh my ass off. They always seemed stapled or taped into what ever contraption as necessary. The mouth movements, the names, it was surreal. Wonka land in the animal world. thanks for posting this!

  • Wonderful.... Thank You....

  • Brilliant! Happy days - things were pleasantly simple back then :O)

  • Oh man just made my day ...thanks

  • thank you! THANK YOU!
