the lonestar classic is an awesome amp but its really dark. if you have a strat style guitar it'll be perfect. if you have a dark LP like me it can get REALLY muddy. I'm about to trade it for a stiletto ACE to brighten my sound up
Bah, this video is pure propaganda from Mesa and not even close to showing real features of Lone Star. The main problem being, of course, Mr. Timmons. That man can make a transistor speaker connected to a can of pickles sound like a god's guitar teacher.
@bluebrowne13 stage 1 it is. Stage 2 has II written on jack input and has a green standby bulb in front. Stage 1 has a horrible drive channel, do not buy it you will regret
@bluebrowne13 tone is in the fingers, mic+mixer+recording device youtube compression all are factors. As much as I love Andy I hate Ibanez and Mesa boogie.I rate him because he is so talented he can even make Dimarzio (crap) Ibanez and mesa boogie sound good. Save yourself thousands and buy yourself a tube marshall or an orange, maybe even a fender hot rod deluxe or a blues junior and a japanese fender if you dont have enough for american or maybe a basic Gibson SG and see what tone you get.
hey man, thanks for uploading this. Wondering if you can help me. I recently bought a lonestar classic 2x12 combo, and I love it, but it is lacking slightly in the shimmer department. I know I have to spend more time dialing it in to get Andy's tone, but I was wondering if you thought i might like the lss better?
@foxtrotalex I was kinda noticing that 2 coming from playing a fender deluxe that I've used for awhile (you probably are coming from the same camp?) Notice in Andy's videos he says it's 'fat' and 'warm' without harshness... this may be the price of that; losing some of that sparkle. I gladly made that trade. Try playing with the presence and the treble though at 100W mode? I used to run stereo w a fender 4x10 tweed and it balanced perfectly but I know that's a lot of weight carryin 2 amps...
Hey man, seems like you have the same taste in gear as me. I'm continuing to make small tweaks to the lonestar, and I'm finally getting my tone to where I want it. I also moved the amp from my room into a jam space, and man it sounds so much better in a large room.
@1dangus1. The answer to your question is tough. When I was making that choice, I went to a shop to try out all the current mesas (except the ED and mark v which weren't out yet). I was thinking going in that I would like the stiletto most, closely followed by the lonestar classic. After trying all the mesas out, I was in love with the lonestar special! I didn't like the stiletto at all actually (it's very brightly voiced). The lss was right in the middle of the lsc and stiletto for me.
I tried it last week and while I thought it sounded good, it wasn't the sort of amp I could make a tonal home in. My dirty and clean sounds tend to involve very different settings (even on the LS) so I was able to get a really nice clean, but when I flipped over to the distortion, I had to retweak. Once I did that, I'd lost the clean I wanted. I think my issues have to do with single channel amps as a whole though. Tone wise, I think the LSS and the 112 ED are very comparable.
@wfranklin i'm funny about that kind of stuff too, i remember going to sam ash the other day to try out a marshall haze, but when i saw that the clean and overdrive channell shared the same eq, i didn't even bother, my settings are pretty much completely opposite switching from clean to dirty
Also, I should point out that the lonestar amps all have identical preamps. The same goes for stilleto series. The differences are in the power sections. Based on my financial and volume/power needs (or constraints), the lss was great for me. If you find yourself liking the lsc but are looking for a more British flavor, you can run that amp with el34s or you can get an LSS (which, though less common, comes in a 212, 410, and head configuration).
I have a cool story for everyone. When I ordered Andy's Official Bootleg DVD about 3 years ago, there was a problem with the copy I received. I emailed his site to resolve the issue and got a phone call FROM HIM. He left his cell # on my voicemail so I could call him about it. Months later, while I was searching for a new amp, my brother called him to get his opinion. Andy remembered us & was very gracious. My brother spoke to him a couple of times about the Lonestar.
I believe he told my brother that he felt the "what is the best amp" question was a complex one. He may have mentioned others but he said he really did love the Lonestar. I think he is being genuine when raving about Mesa Boogie in general and the Lonestar in particular.
I eventually bought a 2x12 combo. I even searched for a used Memory Man echo & found one around the corner from me. I also bought his signature BB preamp. I've been able to reproduce the sound on this video & the video on the Mesa site almost exactly. I've even learned the Lonestar part of this note for note. For fun, I was thinking of posting a mock video of it, words & all, to demonstrate how similar it sounds. I don't yet have a mic etc & am not sure it would translate well to video. I will
eventually get the things I need to post a video that will hopefully translate well. For those who are wondering if you can reproduce this sound with the Lonestar, my answer is yes. You just need to take some time to dial it in. A good delay (analog preferably) is also a must. It really fills out the sound and is necessary to nail Andy's tone. Thank you Andy for being a great player and a great person.
Andy needs to update this video. Like upload a new one. Although I have seen his rig up close in person at his masterclass. Now he's got a Buddha Budwah, GNI Fuzz, Ibanez Tubescreamer (original), his signature BB Preamp and the obvious Peterson tuner, Mesa amps, three knob Tube Driver, Carl Martin Compressor and Dimarzio cables. Other than that, the most important component would probably have to be his hands.
Actually he mixes it up. Last time I saw his rig it had the Lonestar side with a 412 and the Stiletto side with the 212s. I remember him having a Lonestar combo at the Dallas guitar show as well. But he definitely loves closed back cabs.
I think its his new signature Ibanez. I'm glad he's switched to maple necks, they sound a lot brighter than rosewood (which couples with the singlecoils really well)
there are no single coils at this guitar :))) singles you see have a double magnets :))) and this is not the new model. this one AT100 comes before AT300. AT100 is now reissued by ibanez.
hum canceling singlecoils ;) cruisers to be exact - look'em up on the dimarzio homepage. they use dual blades, which are not wound individually, which makes it one single coil, that produces the sound
No, his Maple neck model is the AT100, which predates the AT300 (rosewood) by quite a while. Although I'd have to agree with you, Maple > Rosewood in my mind.
My favorite guitarist on the planet. The perfect storm of tone, technique, taste and phrasing, dude's just a straight MONSTER player! He's also one of the nicest, most ego-less cats you'll ever meet.
i got this mothdffuckeinb monster behind me and shit, you will never get these kind of shit in your whole fucking life, this is basically what he's saying in his 5 min video
Either two Memory Mans or the TC Electronics rack unit. It automatically switches with the G Force ground control depending on which effect he is using.
if you DON'T WANT to fall in love with the Lonestar, DON'T WATCH THIS VIDEO. You're gonna pick yourself planning even on KILLING people, juse to buy one of those
Man, I dunno why I didn't bother to check this guy out sooner. His tone is nothing less than phenomenal. He could -almost- sell me on a Lonestar or a Stiletto...
Seriously, Andy Timmons and Eric Johnson are a man's guitar players. Once you realize that gain and speed aren't everything, this is where you find yourself...gorgeous.
I have to interject that Andy's getting that tone with less than 100W coming out of that amp too. That was the big gripe I've had about my Marshalls. They never offered half-power settings on their amps. Much is the pity. I'm a Stiletto fan now big time.
This guy is so ARTICULATE in his demo, never stuttering or searching for words. SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HIS SH*T AND ISN'T AFRAID TO SHARE HIS KNOWLEDGE! Appreciate this young players, years ago guys were MUCH more secretive about their tonal workings. Thanks Andy, fantastic tone/chops.
variety of tones? They all seemed very similar with small subtle differences like pick response and slight eq because of tube types and pedals. Perhaps its because the pickups he has are very hot. Very good tone...yes, variety of tones...meh not really.
As far as i know, he put back the JB in his AT100 i read it at the AT forum and in an interview too as far as i remember. It was his all time favourite, the Dimarzio AT1 is also based on the JB, at the end of the Cry for you live video, you can see the logo if you look careful. In the AT300 he has the AT1 which is very very close to the Breed.
But we can never have his fingers unfortunately, which counts the most:)
The AT1 and a JB are nothing alike. The AT1 is a Dimarzio Breed with a little less bass, the JB is something totally different. MUCH brighter, to begin with.
i just said it was based on the JB because it was (and probably is) his favorite pickup and he said it came out even better and as you say it sounds like a breed almost
because the lone star only has so much gain. When he uses overdrive pedals he pushes the amp even harder giving him a really killer sounding solo tone.
It's funny you should say that. Because in the studio, for his latest CD "Resolution", he uses 2 Marshall Plexi's into 2 Mesa Recto 4x12 cabs. And not his mesa heads. However, both tones are incredible.
It's Andy Timmons, he'd still sound amazing through a 10 watt Marshall haha!
no, 80% of the tone definitely doesn't come from the way you play the guitar. 2/3rds of a player's tone is the amp, and the other 1/3 is from the guitar.
Sound comes from you, TONE comes from you and the amp. You can get any amp to sound like you if you have a particular style but the TONE will be hindered or "amplified" by the amp. Just my opinion but I've heard some great players sound like cr@p due to poor gear. Now gear doesn't necessarily need to be expensive, just good. You can pic through some cheap amps and guitars and find gems and turds.
Bullshit on your contention that a players style is determinant on tonality.
If you dont know that you are either ignorant, stupid or deaf. Maybe all 3. Since I dont speak with the ignorant or the stupid and since the deaf have no place in this arguement I suggest you shut up and don't talk to me as if you are my equal.
i would definitely like for you to show me where i said that "a player's style is determinant on tonality," because i don't believe i said that. if you look at my older comment it says, "you can sound great and suck at the same time. or vice versa." if there is a miscommunication, i'll clear it up.
what i am saying is that tonality is not affected AT ALL by the way someone plays. many people have great tone, but play awful. i also know many people who play wonderfully and have horrible tone.
They are as much a factor as the amp or the guitar. If you dont know that please refer to my earlier post because, in not knowing this, you demonstrate that you know nothing.
Then look up the Ted Nugent plugging into Eddie Van Halen's gear story.
Tonality is not the same as tone dude, tonality is in fact based entirely on what you play. Look the word up. Secondly, this vid clearly shows that the Lonestar, the Stiletto and the Tube Driver, each of them very different, sound pretty much the same when Andy plays them. Evanescence use Stilettos too, go ahead and tell me they sound like Andy. The more skilled you become as a player, the more you LEARN to control tone with your fingers. Amps play a big part, but no more than your fingers.
wrongo. great tone takes years of practice. sure, u need great gear, but you also need to learn how to use it. take it from a guy who has a lonestar, bb preamp and nice guitars... i dont sound like andy... though i do like to think my tone is nice considering i havent been playing all that long
"such a large plate voltage" I love that he knows what he's talking about and not just some idiot

Insanely good sound.. From a set of insanely good fingers... It's about 50% OF THE SOUND.. Or 80%??
johanaavit 3 years ago
can some please tell me how much a lonestar 100watt head cost me in australia
ibanezrulez1 3 years ago
i think the RRP for them here is a bit less than $4500, obviously in aus dollars

@4:13 pure tube magic, great tone..

Amazing tone!
chooch187 3 years ago
variety of tones? They all seemed very similar with small subtle differences like pick response and slight eq because of tube types and pedals. Perhaps its because the pickups he has are very hot. Very good tone...yes, variety of tones...meh not really.
clehneis 3 years ago
he has a Duncan JB at the bridge and 2 dimarzio cruiser bridge models at the middle and neck positions, they are not that hot to be honest.
But the tones are not that different i agree with that, but Andy sounds like himself on anything, and thats how it should be.
He also has an octavia, OC2, and a G-force normally, but this video it is just some clean and dirty sounds
AndyVerok 3 years ago
The bridge pickup is a dimarzio, not a duncan JB.
WG6 3 years ago
officially in the production models it was a Dimarzio AT1, but Andy has a JB in his AT100
AndyVerok 3 years ago
Interesting, didnt know that. Must have had the Seymour Duncan logo removed. Does he still have the AT-1 in his 300?
WG6 3 years ago
As far as i know, he put back the JB in his AT100 i read it at the AT forum and in an interview too as far as i remember. It was his all time favourite, the Dimarzio AT1 is also based on the JB, at the end of the Cry for you live video, you can see the logo if you look careful. In the AT300 he has the AT1 which is very very close to the Breed.
But we can never have his fingers unfortunately, which counts the most:)
AndyVerok 3 years ago
cool info, funny to hear how many people bag on the JB. Ill have to check out the AT forum
WG6 3 years ago
The AT1 and a JB are nothing alike. The AT1 is a Dimarzio Breed with a little less bass, the JB is something totally different. MUCH brighter, to begin with.
flukather 3 years ago
i just said it was based on the JB because it was (and probably is) his favorite pickup and he said it came out even better and as you say it sounds like a breed almost
AndyVerok 3 years ago
i dont know the reason he use others overdrivers pedals if he have the lonestar with that fantastic tone.
ReNaNzBR 3 years ago
because the lone star only has so much gain. When he uses overdrive pedals he pushes the amp even harder giving him a really killer sounding solo tone.
clehneis 3 years ago 2
So I bought a TC G Force, and after having a few months to play with it, I really think its a HUGE part of Andy's tone, esp his clean.
mindovermatter1979 3 years ago 3
this guy's got awesome tone on his CDs
heminder 3 years ago
It's funny you should say that. Because in the studio, for his latest CD "Resolution", he uses 2 Marshall Plexi's into 2 Mesa Recto 4x12 cabs. And not his mesa heads. However, both tones are incredible.
It's Andy Timmons, he'd still sound amazing through a 10 watt Marshall haha!
RacerXSuperhero 3 years ago
did't know that...
agreed, 80% of the tone comes from the playing...
heminder 3 years ago
no, 80% of the tone definitely doesn't come from the way you play the guitar. 2/3rds of a player's tone is the amp, and the other 1/3 is from the guitar.
punkdude543 3 years ago
what about the skill and talent?
heminder 3 years ago
skill and talent decides if someone is a good player, not if their tone is decent. you can sound great and suck at the same time. or vice versa.
punkdude543 3 years ago
Sound comes from you, TONE comes from you and the amp. You can get any amp to sound like you if you have a particular style but the TONE will be hindered or "amplified" by the amp. Just my opinion but I've heard some great players sound like cr@p due to poor gear. Now gear doesn't necessarily need to be expensive, just good. You can pic through some cheap amps and guitars and find gems and turds.
joesl8 3 years ago
to me, sound and town are the same, but if you replaced sound with "feel", then i can definitely agree with you.
punkdude543 3 years ago
oh bullshit
ThieleM 3 years ago
bullshit on what? you don't think the tone your guitar makes is from the amp? are you that stupid?
punkdude543 3 years ago
Bullshit on your contention that a players style is determinant on tonality.
If you dont know that you are either ignorant, stupid or deaf. Maybe all 3. Since I dont speak with the ignorant or the stupid and since the deaf have no place in this arguement I suggest you shut up and don't talk to me as if you are my equal.
ThieleM 3 years ago
Wow, chill out there sport, you sound llike someone off their meds.
WG6 3 years ago
mind your own business
ThieleM 3 years ago
i would definitely like for you to show me where i said that "a player's style is determinant on tonality," because i don't believe i said that. if you look at my older comment it says, "you can sound great and suck at the same time. or vice versa." if there is a miscommunication, i'll clear it up.
what i am saying is that tonality is not affected AT ALL by the way someone plays. many people have great tone, but play awful. i also know many people who play wonderfully and have horrible tone.
punkdude543 3 years ago
and you are wrong
ThieleM 3 years ago
so you believe your fingers are what produce the sound that comes out of speakers?
punkdude543 3 years ago
They are as much a factor as the amp or the guitar. If you dont know that please refer to my earlier post because, in not knowing this, you demonstrate that you know nothing.
Then look up the Ted Nugent plugging into Eddie Van Halen's gear story.
ThieleM 3 years ago
yeah, that punkdude543 knows nothing
omarfusion 3 years ago
Tonality is not the same as tone dude, tonality is in fact based entirely on what you play. Look the word up. Secondly, this vid clearly shows that the Lonestar, the Stiletto and the Tube Driver, each of them very different, sound pretty much the same when Andy plays them. Evanescence use Stilettos too, go ahead and tell me they sound like Andy. The more skilled you become as a player, the more you LEARN to control tone with your fingers. Amps play a big part, but no more than your fingers.
C7Blackjack 3 years ago
The amp plays a big role sure, but his fingers are gold. His touch and feel creates his sound and its fucking beautiful
ballerdan21 3 years ago
wrongo. great tone takes years of practice. sure, u need great gear, but you also need to learn how to use it. take it from a guy who has a lonestar, bb preamp and nice guitars... i dont sound like andy... though i do like to think my tone is nice considering i havent been playing all that long
ericprsse 3 years ago
great tone...
and that GUITAR!!! what a great Ibanez!
AGHASTOFFICIAL 3 years ago
"6L6 great clean..." could not agree more andy.
punkdude543 3 years ago 2
What's the rack unit for his pedals at the top of the stilleto?
PedrosNoShit 3 years ago
it is the brain of his Voodoo Lab GCX Ground Control unit, he has the foot controller of it on the floor so you can not see it
AndyVerok 3 years ago
wow! i have a 'mesa fund' so i can save up to get one of those beasts.
soggybomb 3 years ago
what amp is on the left?
MiKill93 3 years ago
that's a Mesa/Boogie Lonestar Head
gibson181 3 years ago
Lonestar is on the left, the Stilleto is the amp that has the rack sittig on it. The Lonestar is my fave, great clean sound.
Twanger73 3 years ago
Killer tone! Andy is THE cool guitarist IMO.
vgarambone 3 years ago
3:14 to 3:17 would be such a cool song.
FRETPICK 3 years ago
@ FRETPICK
from 3:14 to 3:17 IS actualy one of his songs (Good Deliver Us) - look at his profile at DiMarzio site
PedrosNoShit 3 years ago
3:14 to 3:17 is not a song on his dimarzio profile. Dude, 3:14 to 3:17 is just two chords.
Big smile & happy thoughts.
FRETPICK 3 years ago
i think PerdroNoShit meant to say 4:14 to 4:17. that is the song deliver us.
punkdude543 3 years ago
How much do Lonestars cost? Sounds fantastic!
