I am proud to say that back in 1974 I played 5 tracks from this album on my radio station at the time, WSAY. Touch My Soul should have had 1000 times the success it did and should be a classic. Michael, I am doing a feature on this great album in my Nasty Newz blog this week. I am Lane Changer so move over!!!!!
1974 and I used to call the local radio station to play this tune. When it came on...if we were driving...we pulled over...it was "our song' according to my girlfriend. I would love to find this on CD, I have the album. Other comments here are right on the money, I'll bet if this tune was re-released, it would be a hit.
You sure have a great collection. I type in a favorite song I am thinking of, and your stuff comes up 90% of the time. I guess we are a couple of old Kshe Pigs.
We played Michael's music a lot on WJRH-FM at Lafayette College, Easton PA in the 1970's. Blaring "Lane Changer" from our stereo speakers over the quad on a fine spring day... incredible. Now I heard from my college roommate that this fine song was written about his sister... is that accurate?
Crabby Appleton was my "pet band" from the 70's. Michael Fennelly was an al-around talent in his own right - He wrote all their music, sang lead vocals and played lead guitar. I have never heard such a uniquely versatile artist in a looooong time. ALL I can say Mike and the Band were the victims of bad promotion and lack of airplay. Casey Foutz also deserves recognition (I wonder if Flaco Falcon is actually still alive !!)
Genius..... I remember having his solo album "Stranger's Bed"in the 1970's which I thought was excellent .....And I'll keep saying it forever : The 1st Crabby Appleton album is a masterpiece;every song on it rocks.
I am new to Youtube...never thought I would ever hear this song again...this was my fav in HS. Is there any way I can get this on cd??? I would love to have this on my ipod...it truly gave me so much inspiration during the teen years. What a tribute to late bloomers!
I can understand how someone as talented as Fennelly could walk away from the business. The 2 Crabby albums and his 2 solo albums (that I am aware of) are uniformly excellent and very radio friendly, but no one paid attention much after "Go Back". Cannot understand why at all.
Epic did not support the album. Period. Without a focused push and supported touring you were dead in the 1970's. Volume sales of polyvinyl chloride is what the record business was about, not about the music. Epic, which was a sub' of Columbia, now Sony, was known for throwing bands against the wall to see which would stick. Quite often they ended up with a Fogelberg at the exclusion of a Fennelly.
All keyboards on Lane Changer were played by the late Casey Foutz. He was the keyboardist in Crabby Appleton and traveled to London with Fennelly to record Lane Changer. Rod Argent and Russ Ballard sang background on Touch My Soul, but did not play on the album. Jeff Beck played the lead solo on Watch Yerself. MF
@Isabelpepper Thanks, Dave. My two albums with the group Crabby Appleton are available on Amazon, itunes, etc... The album 'Begin' by The Millennium is also available, as are some albums of Millennium demos, such as The Millennium Again, and The Second Millennium. My two solo lp's, Lane Changer and Stranger's Bed, have yet to be released on CD. One can find vinyl copies, here and there. I'm working with Sudazed Records on a cd of my unreleased material. I'll post updates here, if and when.
Man, I couldn't agree more with the comments people are making about Fennelly and Crabby Appleton. How did this genius, and this unbelievable piece of art go so unnoticed? This song is an absolute masterpiece.
fantastic love his music. got all the crabby appleton albums.. wonder what happen to him. talk to there old drummer . he wouldnt talk about it..changed the conversation
Yes, Fennelly was backed by Argent on this track and the Lane Changer album. But the bass player here is not Chris White (who produced Lane Changer and therefore and was in the Zombies along with Rod Argent, but not in the group Argent). Rather, the bass player here is Jim Rodford and the drummer is Rob Henrit - excellent musicians, one and all.
What a great track - really a magnificently soulful piece of music which has not dated at all.
Yes, Chris White produced and played bass on the album here and Rod Argent also played keyboards. His excellent organ playing can be heard on this track (basically, Fennelly is backed by the group Argent on this). The beautifully played guitar solo is by Fennelly. Eveyone who hears this loves it, even my wife who says that she does not much like 'white soul' as she pleases to call it. (But why can't she just say 'soul' instead? - because that what it is, no more and no less).
I typed in Michael Fennelly just out of courosity...and here it is. A favorite of mine and is a hard song to find. But i have it in my collection along with Crabby Appleton...Then i thought i bet the guy who posted this is from St. Louis. KSHE KLASSICS i have most of them and some very rare stuff from the late 60's and early 70's. I have all 4 GYPSY CD'S... fkngrvnmj Thanks for the posting...Do you remember the KSHE Kite Fly's in the 70's at Forest Park? Thanks!!!
Lane Changer is a great album. I think he just gave up after awhile, making fine music that never caught on. Last I heard he was living in Orgeon and teaching school?
For some reason that I can't figure, this guy never had the success that he deserved or that was fitting to his great talent. This is a really fine song, as one would would expect from Fennelly. Another logical reason as to why this track is so good is the excellence of the singing and the guitars, too.
Oh my G-d...someone posted something by Fennely. I have searched for 30 yeARS to find more on him. Lane Changer and Fennelly are the most underated pieces of work I know of. I'd welcome any more info.
Great! thanks for posting this.Micheal Fennelly is one of the greats .His work in Crabby Appleton is superb....I used to own Stranger's Bed but I have never heard stuff off of Lane Changer.

i think some of The Zombies were involved in this album, like White and Argent, as producers, but not sure.
