i'm a musician and i agree with the download wat ever like if i want to get a song i don't wat to pay like 2$ a song and by the way the people who wrote and the people who play it get a 20% of that 2$ and then that money has to be divided they are getting barely anything anyways plus concert that they play they get well over a million per show they can suck it up and lose say 10 cents
This is serious. I'm an author and artist and just found out my book was stolen on one of those download sites. I don't make a ton of money, just enough to live on and support my two young boys. When you all download this stuff for free, it's like taking food out of my kids mouths. It means I stop writing and drawing and have to go find other employement. It means you don't get to read any more of my work or see any more of my art. It's not just the big guys that get hurt. It's all of us.

The best part I brought in $400 I only had $10 in the blank CD's
The local law Enforcement Code guys a ctually stopped and started to bust my balls for it.
So I pulled out my laptop and played this video for them and they laughed and said I was good Even though he was kidding the courts
So thank you KID ROCK the $390 I pocketed was pure profit.
Next week-end I'm going to go to the local flea market with around 100 copies and sell them for $5 each.. My local best buy had a sale this week-end and I got 100 CD-R's for only $7.99

correction: you are getting a copy (which can be copied an infinite number of times basically free). the artist loses nothing in the act of copying. they could argue that it decreases the likelihood of the person buying their CD, but studies have shown it can (and does) also increase that likelihood. I promise that it has for me - my own CD collection will attest to this.
I never said people shouldn't pay for music, and I do believe that artists should be paid for their work.
But my main points still stand:
1) the record industry is pricing themselves out of the business
2) comparing downloading a CD to stealing clothes or an iPod from a store is NOT a valid argument. not even close. COPYING SOMETHING IS NOT THE SAME AS STEALING SOMETHING. it's pretty simple.

did not exist in the first place, you just made a copy, and an artist can NOT own something that does not yet exist.
A CD is a physical object you can "steal".
An mp3, unfortunately for these litigators, is a bunch of 1's and 0's.
When you steal a CD it costs someone something. Downloading music just means they don't get paid. There's a huge difference.

When you have downloaded a cd on the net for free, you are not going down to buy the cd, and therefor the musician is being stolen from.
But if you want to see it in another way, you are not stealing his cd, you are stealing his money, is that alot better?
