  • Great video.

  • A Nurse who had been in Labor & Delvery for 10 yrs told me that the infant kiss is refering to something nurses actually have to counsel new moms about. it is not uncommon for a woman to have an orgasm the FIRST time they breast feed. because the only other time they have been suckled was in the heat of passsion w/ the boyfriend, so they FEEL GUILT & fears of insest! ("this is a baby I sholdnt feel this!)but, its a perfectly natural rection. so the 'kiss' is breast feeding &its flood of emotions

  • WELL DONE! The Innocents has always been one of my favorite horror films! and I too have been a BUSHHEAD since high school. In fact, I made a 'KATE BUSH' video too! It was for an ANIMATION class in college. I did it to MOVING (from her first album The Kick Inside) a girlfriend of mine was with the chicago ballet & she choreographed a beautiful dance for the film & NO Bushheads, she did not 'swim' around like a whale! *wink*

  • I cudnt sleep and flicked over to Film4 and this was on and I just caught that kiss scene and thought did I just see what I think I saw, so I looked it up on here lol. Im watching it now totally Intrigued, the only film Ive saw do sumthin similar to this is "Birth" with Nicole Kidman.

  • Beautiful song and what an amazing visual!

    Perfect marriage...great work:)

  • The essence of straight shota

  • Absolutely brilliant! I knew that Kate had based the song on the film 'The Innocents' and you have caught the mood in a beautifully sensitive way. Thank you for all the work that must have involved and for sharing it here.

  • After I have seen this, I will search for the movie and watch.

  • I think it's a brilliant video. Disturbing, in a similar way to the song.

  • Very strange and heavy story. Well done, k8fan, so a truly fan must be, I think Mrs. Bush would like it too !

  • an amazing video and a great tribute to a wonderfully terrifying movie!

  • nice vid, though, pretty dumb giving the end away.

  • I felt a complete pedophile when I watched this movie... Miles was very sexy and handsome. I loved the part when he said "Kiss me good night Miss Guidens" and kissed her... T-T I just loved it.

  • @NicoleAkari Help me out here ~ I'm a little confused...WHY would this subject have anything to do with your liking bicycles ? ? ? Did it make you want to "peddle" around the block...hence "Pedo"phile...I DO confuse easily. Hmph !? ! ?

  • @NicoleAkari then do not watch "Let The Right One In"....

  • Most superb. Very, very well done.

  • Most superb. Very, very well done.

  • i have a version of this too, (but on a lighter note). i have put a message on my video for ppl who want to see the real story behind the song to come and see this version.

  • I wonder what Kerr felt and thought about that kiss...it must have been a hard scene to film...

  • @MadameChristie I've never read an interview where she talked about it.

  • @k8fan It's too bad because it's something I'd like to know...

  • really nice!

have to watch the film now!

  • One of my favorite psychological horror films. Disturbing but so beautiful. The song complements it well-I love Kate Bush!

  • Powerful blending of the song and film. Amazing. Pure Gold Effort!

  • Beautiful <3

  • Wow.... I loooooove this song it's so beautiful, and I really would want to see this movie !!!

  • How FABULOUS is this???!!! Kate wrote this song after seeing this film about an infant who was possesed by the spirit of a man. Your video captures the whole mood of this song. Thanks for this, it's bloody marvelous!

  • Incredible movie, incredible song, but imagine if a guy sang this about a little girl!

The film and the song are playing with the idea of paedophilia. Ground-breaking for it's time. By the way I love your edit.

  • well done!

  • That was really great; good job! It was really moving & beautiful; thank you :}

  • Actually I wonder if this movie had controversy when it came out? Deb Kerr is kissing quite passionately...looks wonderful for the movie but might have been seen as bad at the time....

  • Thanx K8fan...wow amazing! Really interesting...I have to see the movie now. :)

  • @thisters Please do. It's a great film and the video doesn't do justice to the beautiful cinematography.

  • Did Kate write this with the movie in mind? It fits so well....

  • @thisters Kate was inspired to write the song by the film. I learned about this from an interview, then obtained a copy of the movie and made a video to the song to learn how to edit.

  • @k8fan

Well you did a great job of it! Five Stars

  • @k8fan really creepy/beautiful film...Love the scene with the ghost across the pond.

  • @k8fan u rule

  • just perfect.

  • sublime !

  • This is brilliant.Just the way i imagined the video after hearing the song so many times. So creepy yet beautiful.

  • Beautiful song, great video.

  • Oh my. I never thought "that" kiss would be made so much more infamous. The Innocents is a perfect combination of atmosphere and psychological terror, and you added to those aspects with this track. Wonderful fan video.

  • Thank you very much.

  • this movie is very atmospheric..its really creepy..zomfg..loved it.

  • This is amazing...very well done! Thanks so much for posting.

  • I have to agree with the above: you matched both film and sing PERFECTLY!! I think all involved would be more than pleased!! Well done!! You never know where inspiration comes from...

  • I've seen the film and the editing of this video is inspired. I think you did Kate justice with this

  • You sure learned your craft beautifully, I love the way Deborah Kerr's flings her head back (at 2:21) in absolute dispair, as the music surges to a crescendo and kate sing that it "gets too much". It just all works really well. . . This album always reminds me of being about 15, being a moody, hormonal teenager, spending my time in my bedroom smoking out the window listening to Kate Bush. Thanks for helping me remember.

  • When there is a man with the child in his eyes, it follows that there most likely also exists a child with a man behind those eyes... ;-)

  • This song is so beautiful...

  • I read somewhere that this song is Kate's favourite among her own songs. Does anyone know if that's true?

  • Well done!, It's just so beautiful and tragic....

  • great great video.

wow - a phonecall with K8 - but you really deserved it ;)

    Daniel

  • You have eye for detail! The lyrics and the film really seem to match! Well done!

  • Thank you. I was lucky in that the film inspired Kate to write the song.

  • Excellent job.

    Just blew me away...

  • This is a genious song, written by a genious woman.

  • I applaud you; this was amazing!

It is terribly ironic- this year, I read Turn of the Screw (a fantastic work), and added the Infant Kiss to my list of most favorite songs (Kate Bush is by far my favorite artist). But I would have never realized that Kate was inspired by this movie, or that this film, which I have heard of, was based off of Turn of the Screw!

Regardless, your video is an example of true art. Thank you for sharing it.

  • Ok I don't post much but I have to to this. This is magnificent. One of the best videos online. Never seen the Innocents but love Kate so much. You did superb!!!!!!One of my favorite Kate songs from my fav Kate cd! Dying to see the Innocents. I can feel everything. Hope Kate sees this. Beyond Brilliant keep up the good work!

  • Thank you very much.

Kate has seen it, and got my telephone number and called me to tell me that she enjoyed it.

I think you might have this confused with another song though - this is not from "Aerial", it's from "Never For Ever".

  • holy shit, your joking right?

I cn be rather gullable with these things

  • No, not joking. She obtained my number either from the fan club or from the Homeground fanzine. This was back before she was directing her own videos (the first one she directed was "Hounds of Love") and she wanted to talk about editing. I'm afraid I wasn't terribly helpful as I was blithering like an idiot - as you might imagine. We talked for 10 minutes or so.

  • Holy crap your lucky

  • I am watching the movie The Innocents right now on TV late at night in England...!!

    Very cool film, very disturbing!

  • Outstanding. You have a rare talent - I hope you use it in your professional life!

  • These days I edit mostly for fun - concerts and plays. I've got some other Kate videos that I need to finish, and I'll upload them. Thanks for your kind words.

  • Lovely, lovely, lovely. I've been in love with The Innocents for as long as I can remember, and your editing makes this gorgeous song fit so well it's spooky.

  • I've watched this so many times now! It's just perfect. The Innocents is one of the best films I've ever seen.

As the story progresses, Miles becomes more like Quint whist Miss Giddens becomes more like Miss Jessel (wearing more black for example). There are so many layers to this story.

  • Utterly brilliant. Really heightened an already melodramatic song. Great work - check out an amazing fan made video of a reading of Sylvia Plath's 'Daddy' that seems in the same atmospheric and spine-tingling vein.

  • Fair enough. But the film was the direct inspiration for the song. Kate saw the film and wrote the song based on her interpretation of what is going in the mind of the protagonist.

  • Look at me - all in tears.

I saw this video before, but was not really moved. But now i feel like the opposite.

All respect for Kate, the most admirable person I know. Genius.

But this song is not really about some kind of perversion, is it?

Anyway, the video fits with the songlyrics.

    Fantastic!

  • Yeah I was creeped out by this video, couldn't watch it all

  • Holy Crap, that was so heavy!

I have always loved that song, but I never picked up on its pervision. I always imagined it a woman afraid to fall in love with me. I guess it is...but i was a little kid.

changed my perception of this, one of my fave all time songs, her voice is awesome in this song

  • I just read The Turn of the Screw and saw The Innocents as a follow-up. It's a brilliant story and the chilling movie adaptation did it justice. They both wreak havoc on the mind and imagination. I heard this song was inspired by it and found this video in my search to listen to it. You did a fantastic job. The scenes fit with the lyrics perfectly. Also this was my introduction to Kate Bush and you definitely helped make me a fan.

  • The Others was no doubt inspired by The Turn of the Screw but it veers into another direction and isn't the same. For instance, The Others takes place sometime after World War II and The Turn of the Screw takes place in Victorian England. Both deal with a mother figure whose level of sanity might be in question...the servants...the large country estate...the isolation...the two children but that's where it basically draws the line. I have the film and was suprised the director didn't state it.

  • I just checked your page. I bow to your superior knowledge. I had never read the story or seen the film before hearing Kate's song. When I read an interview when she talked about the inspiration for her song, I decided to find the film and make a video as a way of learning how to edit.

That said, do you like the video?

  • Aww thanks! I've been obsessed with this story since I was in 8th grade. I really enjoyed this film though admittedly I am not a big fan of Kate Bush...but since the song is inspired from TOTS, of course I had to watch and comment. You did a very good job including video that fit with the song. :D

  • Is she actually in love with the little boy, or is she under some thrall from the ghosts or something?

  • The governess, Miss Jessup, believes the spirits of the dead gameskeeper and previous governess have entered the bodies of the little boy and girl in her care. Rent the movie. It's really brilliant.

  • That reminds me of a Buffy episode "I only have eyes for you" maybe it was based on this movie.

  • I've never seen it, but it is possible. The original story "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James is a classic of the genre.

  • This song was based on one fleeting moment from the film. It's interesting how Kate could have taken that one moment and turned it into this song but that's not what the whole film is about. I've seen that Buffy episode and it has little to do with the plot as a whole. I do not think the governess was in love with Miles.

  • Gameskeeper? Peter Quint was the Master's valet. Miss Giddens was the governess and Miss Jessel was the previous governess. Sorry for the correction. This story is a passion of mine and I wanted to get the right info to people. Thank you for uploading this song though. As I said in a previous post, it's interesting how Kate could take that one moment and turn it into a whole song. I only wish there was a song out there that encompassed the whole story to give listeners a better impression of

  • what the story is actually about. It was turned into a brillant opera and I'd love to see it turned into a classic style musical.

  • It's been a while since I saw the film, but I could have sworn that he was a gameskeeper in the film. He looked a lot rougher than I assume a gentleman's valet would.

  • He is rather rough looking but I think that's what makes him so spooky. This was discussed in Mrs. Grose and the governess' conversation: "He wore clothes that did not seem to be his own..." and Mrs. Grose comments that "they were the masters'."

  • I love this song, it fits perfectly with the clips. I really enjoyed the movie too; it was the first genuinely frightening film I ever saw.

  • I love the film and the song so much. Both are so beautifully haunting. I wish i could sing like Kate.

  • Wow you did a great edit job !!! It really could be an official music video the way you did it. Like the song much too. But actually I enjoyed watching this video because it shows what an outstanding actress Deborah Kerr was. Look at her and you can guess what she feels. How many other actors are able to act with their eyes the way Deborah did ?

  • did you watched this movie?? how is it? i just ask because maybe i want to see it.

  • It's a great and very disturbing film. The screenplay was by Truman Capote from a story by Henry James. Making the video, I watched the movie many times to select scenes and it still creeps me out. It's a more like films like "The Others" or "The Devil's Backbone" in feel. It's out on DVD.

  • wow! the music fits perfectly to the video. ^_^ or is this the official musicvideo of this song??? the text is really creepy! what a weird boy. O_O

  • Thank you. No, it's not official in any way. This was the very first thing I edited to learn how to edit. But I did send a copy to Kate, and she liked it enough to call me. We talked about editing (actually she talked, I gibbered like a fool.)

  • no way!! O_O she called you? wow! the video must be really impressed her! great job! ;D

  • Thank you. I think she called because, at that time she hadn't directed any of her own videos and was talking to various people about how to make one. I suspect Terry Gilliam was a much more useful source of information than I was.

One thing that made me very happy was that she said: "You were using scenes that I remembered from the film when I wrote the song". It's been decades, but I'm still proud.

  • This is an amazing piece of work all round,my compliments to you.

  • this is amazing work.....the theme of the song is multidimentional if seen as metaphor.

  • Absolutely superb video. It's extremely well edited and the whole package captures the feeling of the song beautifully. Well done :-)

  • Thank you.

  • Outstanding. Thank you for doing this, it adds to my enjoyment of a wonderful song.

  • That video was absolutely fantastic. If you are not doing this professionally, you should be.

  • Thank you. Actually the first version of this video was the very first thing I had ever edited, and I did it as a way to learn how to edit. This is a remake in widescreen after the film was released on DVD. If I were to create it now, I might have chosen to do some things different as some of the scenes were not available in my original source - the TV station had superimposed its logo on some scenes. Thanks again.

  • Yes, it's a really great video. I don't think I will ever make a video for this song because I could never make a better video than this one.

  • Thank you very much. I had an advantage though, in that Kate was directly inspired by this film. So it wasn't hard to fit scenes to the lyrics.

  • Wonderful ! Same feeling than with the French version ! Very nice work of editing !

  • This was great! I remember that odd scene and how uncomfortable it made me feel, you recaptured it wonderfully.

  • Amazing, absolutely superb video.

  • Bloody Nora, this is fantastic! A pat on the back is in order for this, I think...

  • please, don't be angry with my question: why did the boy kiss that woman? is this film about female pedophilia? or has that boy an adult soul who loves that woman? or does that woman just loves him like her own child (you know, sometimes mothers really like kissing their children on the lips without being really pedophile)?

  • The story is about a governess sent to a house in the country to care for a little boy and girl. The gameskeeper the previous governess had been having an affair. He died, and she killed herself. She becomes convinced that the spirits of the two are trying to take over the bodies of the boy and girl. The film never makes clear if this is really happening, or this is the fevered imaginings of a sexually repressed woman. The thing is, *he* kisses *her*, not a little boy cheek kiss, but as a man.

  • thank you.

  • Yes, the song is about female pedophilia. It was very progressive for it's day(and probably more so today). The woman see's pure beauty and an adult soul in the child.

  • It's NOT about pedophilia. Have you seen the original film? When the boy Miles kisses her, Miss Jessup is shocked and disturbed, not turned on as a pedophile would be. She didn't want him to kiss her, didn't pursue him. Please watch the film.

  • NO there is a difference between an adult seeing something within a child and being a paedophile. Paedophiles {god damn them} are sick, they get sexually aroused by children -that isn't normal. Kate has a son, do you honestly think some one like her would advertise paedophilia?

  • As explained in the introduction, the song is about the film "The Innocents" which was based on Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw". In the film, Miss Jessup grows to believe that the spirit of the dead gameskeeper has occupied the body of the little boy Miles. Paedophiles are attracted to children, and Miles was not behaving like a child, but kisses her like a grown man. It's a very complicated situation and a great film.

  • The Turn of the Screw and the film The Innocents creeped me well out esp. the bit with that woman in black sitting on the opposite bank. This song sums it up very well and it always brings up those images Whoo!

  • Superb. one of my fave Kate Bush songs eva. Nice to see the film clip as i have always wanted to see where her idea came from. Very

    creepy though.

  • Absolutely creepy (and well-made) video! One of my fave. KB songs! Excellent work! I've never seen the movie...I'll have to check it out.

  • Such a brilliant idea!

  • I wouldn't say that is accurate. I'm intimately familiar with "The Innocents", and was still surprised by and enjoyed "The Others", and thought it was the most effective Victorian-era ghost stories I've seen in years.

  • Oh my creepiness. So well done.

I remember when a friend told me about the freakiness of the song. I thought the plot sounded vaguely familiar, and sure enough, it was based on The Innocents.

  • Brilliant

  • What a beautiful little film. A truly perfect piece of work.

  • I'm actually currently working on a music video of my own, with the same song, set to footage from an animated series that lends itself to the song very well. When I'm done, would you mind if I posted it as a response?

  • I shall do that...by the way this song has been my favorite for years...so beautiful and haunting

  • I am so glad I stumbled upon this a little while back, I've watched it so many times... it's really brilliant. I was just cast as Flora in my college's production of Benjamin Britten's opera, "The Turn of the Screw" and this video had a huge part in getting me into the story before audition time... so, thank you! :)

(will finish in the next comment, apparently I type too much for youtube!)

  • AMAZING! this vid is perfect for the song its gonna haunt me for life! thanks!

  • I've just discovered this video clip today. Simply amazing! This is an exceptional piece of work to highlight the brilliant song by Kate Bush. However, I've never seen the movie, "The Innocents" before but I want to rent it as soon as possible. Thank you for this posting k8fan.

  • Thank you.

  • what a weird song :S

    Kate bush is amazing tho

  • Wow....this is amazing. Thanks for such for sharing this with us. I love the film and this song.

  • I think you did a really good job with making the video. The song itself is one of Kate's best.

  • Is it just me or dosent this song just make you wanna cry or write a poem!? This is one of her best songs!

  • It dosent look right when they kiss....

  • That's the idea. It's a creepy and disturbing story of a woman convinced that the spirit of a grown man is inhabiting the body of this little boy.

  • does the boy die at the end?

  • I wouldn't dream of spoiling such a great film. It's out on DVD, you should be able to rent it.

  • Ok whats it called? the Innocents?

  • Yep. Classic film, with a screenplay co-written by Truman Capote.

  • Do u have the infant kiss song?

  • that made me cry at the end. It's so sad how things like that can happen.

  • My all-time favorite music video on YouTube.

  • my favourite list was edited for some reason, I had to re-add this one :p.

  • Anyone know what happened to GAFFAHEAD? Some great vids have gone.

  • Haunting and Beautiful and a bit shocking, too!

Just like Kate Bush and "the Innocents"! Bravo!

  • just sooo beautiful. i've never seen the film, but its been lovely to see an example of where kate got her influence for the song from. u've made it so beautifully, it really gave me the creeps - sent a chill up my spine and put a tear in my eye. thank you

  • Truly beautiful if not unsettling as well. Kate knew how to distill an essence from the story that many might have missed... not just a ghostly thriller, but a woman's sensuality gone askew. Your editorial visualisation is dead on (pardon the pun); a stunning merger of music and imagery. Thank you for posting this.

  • Many thanks! This is possibly Kate's most misunderstood song, especially as most people are unaware of the original film and story. By making a video, I hoped to be able to provide a context for the song.

Kate's had other songs inspired by films:

Get Out of My House - The Shining

Pull Out The Pin - (unknown British Vietnam documentary)

    Delius - Ken Russell's Delius

...and of course Kate "The Red Shoes" is directly inspired by the film by the Archers.

  • Things i did not know! Thank you for the movie-related info.

  • What film is this? this is such a beautiful song....when i read the lyrics i was VERY shocked...then i realised it was influenced by a film....phew! LOVE YA KATE!

  • In response to a request, I've posted a French-language version of the video.

  • WHAT A TALENTED GUY U ARE!

    WE LOVE KATE

  • Ace

  • Fantastic - really works with the song! Very creepy though lol

  • impressive, great quality.

  • The original film was shot by Freddie Francis, who also shot "The Elephant Man", "Dune" and "The Straight Story". Beautiful B&W work.

  • Wow, I realy like the new quality. It looks like it could have been made yesterday! (well it would if there was colour :P)
