from a purely military perspective, the USA could have won that war. after all, USA beat the Japanese Army in much fiercer jungle fighting! without chopper support!! because USA went full throttle against Tojos forces. but in VietNam, this situation did not exist. from a proper tactical view, the entire land mass should have been contained and fully occupied as with Japan after the war. top to bottom and every gully in between had a G.I. on patrol!

Agree acer. The USA could've easily won that war..and in less than half of the time we spent there. And old story, but it was the peace "movement" that prevented just that. It was in part due to Nixon's relentless bombing of NV SAM sites that ultimately brought the NV back to the peace talks. American B-52's were going basically "unchallenged" toward the end of the Christmas 1972 bombing campaign. Perhaps the opportunity was there to bring them to their knees.

My understanding is that Kissinger made a secret deal with Nixon when he was sent by Johnson to negotiate with the North Vietnamese.
