Mervyn Warren's arrangements are like finding sunken treasure. He hits those harmonies that are between the notes, hence a HUGE part of the success of Take 6's earlier songs in the late 80's/early 90's. I call 'em the "melt your heart" chords.

Excellent incite. I keep telling everyone that he was the magic in the group. Joey Kibble just can't replace it. And Mark is extraordinary as well, but without Merv it doesn't give that refresh as the first 2 albums.

I am a big take 6 fan so i was awestruck when merv came to my high school to talk to the vocal majors btw does anyone know the name of that dope song by for real that mervyn wrote he was in the video i just cant remember the name of the song i gotta have that song lol.

Merv wrote and arranged quite a few of the songs from the 1st two albums Brownone, but you may be referring to "I L.O.V.E. U" which he sang lead and was in the video. It's on Youtube. He kills it as usual.

There is also a clip of them on Youtube on BET Soul doing a quick acappella rendition of it. Merv sings it with ease...

oh, i know what ur talking about but i'm talking about the group named "For Real" they recorded a song that merv wrote and produced they did a video for it and he is in the video. I have been trying to get that song forever but i cant remember the name of it to save my life its an acapella song as well.

He left take 6 because seeing that they were a gospel group he had a certain lifestyle they didnt agree with. He is now producing other acts.

The originator, come on.. How can you prove that? I never said anything negative about Riperton but Take 6 does not have anything to envy about Riperton or Opera singers. Shanice may have modeled her singing after Riperton but she's not a great singer and still hits that "impossible note" with no problem, as do all the other singers I mentioned. Still need more examples? Don't go misstating me..I never said Take 6 has higher range than any opera singer or singers, go back and read my posts.

Why are you guys bringing in opera singers or Mariah Carey when Take 6 is primarily an a cappella Christian jazz group that thrives on blend and tight harmonies as it's signature while Mariah is/was a pop soloist with a great range although waaaaay past her prime? Opera singers? Well, they approach this with a totally different style as well, not to mention tone quality. (vocal timbre) Who cares about whistle register when these guys sing soooooo good? Get a grip folks....

We began this debate with a good topic Take 6 or Opera singers, fine. But don't bring Mariah Carrey into this, for Gods sake...Tell me Aretha, Chaka or someone along those lines but Mariah Carrey does not belong in this discussion. What Mark Kibble sings on Something Within Me is soo much more impressive and difficult than anything Mariah Carrey could ever dream of. BTW Denise Williams plays with that "Whistle" note with no thought to it at all.

Well Opera singers have more range than Take 6, the thing that was complex about Take 6 that most groups can not do is the super music arrangement that was established by one of the singers named Mark Kibble, he created the complex harmonies that they sung, all in all they are the best vocal group ever, no one can touch them.

I dont know really how to spell the opera singers name but poveratti, if you know who this is hit ranges that were pretty high, when I speak of range I speak vocal amplitude and height range of note. From what I can tell from the albums the one with the highest range was Claude Mcknight we had the ability to sing Falsetto but best acapella group nonetheless. I understand what your saying though they do have varying degrees of range

Mcknight has great range as does his brother Brian but so do Mark Kibble and Mervyn Warren. If you have the 1st two albums of Take 6, you will hear several examples of these three singers going into operatic range quite comfortably.

never said they didn't have operatic range, i replied to you saying that their singing is more difficult than any opera singer.I know about Kibble and Mervyn's range but what they are known for is complex harmonies and how they use their voices as musical instruments. I grew up on this group also.I study music theory and i know that they are on the level of an operatic singer but i know many opera singers that will blow them out of the water.with tonality, pitch and height, still the best group

If you were to get anyone of the three lead singers of Take 6 they could make the transition to sing opera. Now what opera singer do you know that could step in and sing with Take 6. Tonality is a matter of opinion and I'd take the soulful tone of Kibble over any opera singer, and the only singer that would get "blown out of the water" would be the opera singer trying to bend, come in and out of falsetto, and hit very high notes.

Ha Ha no one is saying you are wrong but the fact of the matter is there are plenty opera singers that are on their level. Your making it seem like nobody can surpass the heights of their notes I can name a few secular people that go above the musical staff, one is Mariah Carey and especially Minnie Ripperton who actually had opera training and surpassed opera singers.  Take 6 is the best acapella group but dont make it seem like they surpass singers when they dont, they are good though.

Again, don't think your that familiar with all of Take 6's music on Get Away Jordan, Mervin hits the high note that is a high as Mariah Carrey, El Debarge can do that too. Opera singers on their level? Maybe in opera but what opera singer could jump into the Take 6 group? Whereas any of the three leads of Take 6 could make the opera transition. Not saying they'd be Pavoratti overnight but they'd be able to get it.

no doubt man but you dont even know your ranges, Mariah surpasses falsetto as well as Minnie Riperton, the octave is called the Whistle Register, Mariah surpasses all of take 6, they are not even on her level, her level is the whistle register that her and only a handful of singers share. The originator of this untouchable range is Minnie Riperton, go type in Minnie Riperton's High Notes on here and my point will be proven. Read the "about this video" section and hear it for yourself. done.

Well hate to burst your bubble but the "Whistle" is done by falsetto. Ever heard of Phil Bailey? He's another male singer that can do that "untouchable" note LOL. And please stop mentioning Mariah in the same conversation as Take 6. What Mervynn Warren sings at the end of L.O.V.E. you, is much more impressive than anything Mariah can do. Steve Perry sings Open Arms with much more power and range than her and Mariah got eaten alive by Patti Labelle to such a degree it was embarrasing.

Before you act like you know music go look up Whistle Register in the dictionary and it even says its higher than falsetto and a note that only most women can make, its in any dictionary, all I ask is that when you say something know what your talking about or atleast do your research. Sorry, but it is you who needs to know more info on the musicians you write about. I too am a music major and can tell you that there are several singers who can reach this note..Again, Phillip Bailey, El Debarge, Phil Perry are some examples. Also, there are several things in singing that take much more talent than this note. You won't hear Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Billy Holiday or Ella hit that note but my God are they light years ahead of a Mariah Carrey.

Hold your demonstrations...Remember, I'm a musician too. Minnie is great but ever hear of Rachel Farrell? Just as powerful. And even a little known R&B singer called Shanice can hit that note effortlessly. Again tone and phrasing alla Roberta Flack or Maurice White is much more impressive.

But what you forget is that Minnie Riperton is the originator of this and she brought the Whistle Register to the mainstream, she is talked about by stevie Wonder who produced and wrote her first hit and Quincy Jones talks about her, what I am stating is fact and do your research, Shanice and Chante Moore both modeled their signiture sounds from this woman. Ive always loved CVMIII's voice throughout the years and I noticed hes given up the high note in "Get away jordan" to David. Im still loving his voice though.That may count as not as strong as he was in the early years, but back then..it was Mervyn that sang that High note in Get away Jordan ;)

I was done with them once Mervyn left. Didn't sound the same as the first 2 albums. Joey Kibble doesn't have that rare lead like Mervyn had. No one that's a new fan of the group realized this. I've heard Joey. He is better at backrounding, than leading like Mark, Mervyn, and Claude.

Mervyn was an excellent singer, but Joey is also good. He lacks the range and power, but he is VERY good in his baritone/2nd tenor range. He has an excellent ear. You cannot compare Mervyn and Joey because there voices are so different. You have to appreciate them seperately. Take 6 is different withot Merv but still excellent.

Joey has had his growing period with T6 and I am glad that they switched his part with David because his voice, while strong is too"burly" for the harmonies. Mervyn was a perfect fit.(cant compare MW and JK) T6 *is* different without MW, but still top class.

It's not only Mervyn. The tenors lost the precision in voice emision which gave their voices such a wonderful quality. Claude has a great vocie but these days he pushes the voice out straight through the mouth - the wrong way. Joey wasn't bad in the beginning. But you have to practice with a teacher to sing well - always. Ask opera singers.
