Hi bob, but unfortunately it is these truck drivers, also here in Argentina it is the same, it would have to put them in jail and withdraw the license, do not realize the disaster that could have caused, I see the took cheap,,,, what happened to the roof of the diesel unit?
@argenvia Nice to hear from you again Gus, part of the roof was damaged when the train hit the lorry which was loaded with bales of hay on the crossing.....Bob
@ay76 Hard to imagine Iain, he had little time to react as he is on a sharp bend when approaching at 50-60mph.....Thanks to his fast reactions and the good brakes on these 175 units that there were no further injuries especially to the driver....Bob
@MG06ZT Thanks Keith, it's thanks to the great engineering in these newer trains, that impact like this don't cause more injuries and fatalities.....Bob
Nice bit of reportage Bob, better than anything I saw on TV, I had half a mind to go down there myself but got busy doing something else. Great vantage point you had - how did you get there?
@eurodestination That's kind of you Gary, the road from the A40 to and from the crossing was heavily guarded by the police. I was stood on the A40 bridge over the railway, unfortunately it meant that most of the footage was shot at full zoom. I used an anti-shake filter, as it was shot without a tripod, but this resulted in smooth images but shakey titles...can't have it all I suppose.....Regards...Bob
@robmasterman I heard today the lights along that whole stretch were out including that crossing, which then wasn't staffed or controlled by anyone - which I think is an accident waiting to happen, and worthy of some direct questions.
@eurodestination If you have a look at an upload of a passenger on the train Gary (mikbac) then it clearly shows the crossing lights working, as did the TV reports on the day...so someone appears to be feeding incorrect information.....Bob
I hope the lorry driver is dealt with severely. It's partly luck and partly a testament to the design and strength of the rolling stock involved that there weren't many deaths and serious injuries.
Having just fully read the other comments Bob, it seems the lorry driver was very careless and lucky not to be injured himself and cause fatalities to others whilst attempting to blame the lights. Thanks once again. Ken
Fair play, There seems to be a special breed of agricultural worker out west given that this is the second incident like this in recent times. It's not as if the tracks are teeming with trains!!
Excellent record Bob, though I did find the wobbly titles a bit unsettling! LOL! Mike
@NN2Blue Very true Mike, it will be interesting to see what happens to him....The wobbly titles are the result of using a new anti-shake filter that YouTube provides...useful when you done some habd held filming, but this was the first time I've used it with titles, so ended up with wobbling, badly spelt titles.....I will know what to do next time....Bob
@acw71000 Thanks Austin, the lorry driver was arrested soon after the incedent but has subsequently been released on bail...he was reported as having said the lihjts were not working on the crossing, yet footage taken at the scene by one of the passengers, clearly shows they were....He also jumped from the lorry before the impact....Bob
Hi Bob I passed through Whitland on Monday morning not long after it had happened it was a real mess thank god no one was seriously injured, I was driving home to Pembrokeshire today on the the m4 and saw the train on the back of two low loaders i think we were around the Cardiff area at the time.
@daviescurly78 It was indeed a miracle that there were so few injuries, and no doubt due to the excellent design properties of these newer trains...The unit was sent up North but I don't know if it will be repaired......Many thanks for your observations....Bob
@pigsrbest It's part of the engineering design that go in to modern trains, to keep them upright in the event of a derailment....and this clearly as in this case has saved many injuries.....The lorry driver had left his lorry before the impact....Bob
@modemeyes Miraculously the driver was not injured, the ticket collector suffered minir injuries....incredible Mike when you look at the damage to the unit....Bob
Brilliant capture Bob, Im also wondering how on earth such a thing happens in the first place.
And to think that breakdown train has come from Bescot, which is a 10 min walk for me from my place. Fancy that eh.... Im so nosey I wanted more and more footage... ha ha
@Bevoin1970 Thanks Paul, unfortunately the public was not allowed any nearer than I was, the road both sides of the incedent were blocked off by the Poilce. The Bescot Brake down unit was attending an incident down Exeter way a few weeks ago....it's a crazy world......Bob
Nearly every day, I see cars and lorries drive past red traffic lights because the drivers think that they can get through before anything comes the other way, and I suspect the same attitude applies to level crossings. The survivors of crossing "accidents" usually have some excuse like lights not working or brake failure (as if the independent brake systems all failed at once!). Anyway, Bob, that was a very interesting and topical newsreel. Was that the RAIB also videoing the scene?...Mervyn
@mvjedforest It's always an upsetting sight to see Mervyn, and these incedents are nearly always down to human error. The lorry driver was reported as having said the crossing lights were not working, yet they were clearly seen working during a BBC Report that evening. As far as the other camera man is concerned, I don't know who he was representing....if it was the RAIB, then he would have been trackside I would have thought.....Bob
I'm off for the 70s ; when they eventually leave the docks..who knows. I don't think I;ll stand around too long. It's bloomin windy on Newport sation and it's no go in the docks
@TheMichaelWilcock He was indeed Mike, though you might have been there as well.....good luck at Newport, I look forward to seeing what you capture....Bob
@alexamltd The lorry driver was crossing the railway with a trailer fully loaded with hay, he is reported to have said that the crossing lights were not working. However on TV reports on the day they were clearly working.....investigations continue....Bob
Alaways good to read that there were no serious injuries. These self propelled "trains" do really badly in collisions. We have had some horror crashes with them in Australia.
@Rocketboy1950 Like modern cars, these newer trains are built to collapse on impact, and they are also designed to stay upright on collisions, so thankfully these issues proved invaluable in this case with realatively few injuries in such a major impact....Bob
@robmasterman No such luck here Bob. We have had two roll overs. One hit a car and finished up in a ditch, The other hit a truck, seriously and permanently injuring the train driver. My mate travelling in the cab lost his leg and two in the car were killed. One was the train drivers mother and the other was an off duty train driver. These death traps are speed restricted or totally banned on a lot of our country network that only has passive crossing protection.
@Rocketboy1950 That's a terrible series of events, and thank goodness such things are relatively rare....Thanks for sharing such sobering matters, that certainly make you aware of how easily things can go wrong....Bob
I heard about this on the radio whilst at work and later saw it on BBC news, and thought 'will he be out there to get it?' and there you did. Incidents like this have really not gone down in numbers the last few years either by carelessness or deliberation.
@balmesh Didn't have much time Alan, went to Llanelli first....only wished I could have captured the move of the unit back to Whitland later in the day. I haven't had any feed back since I came home...Bob
Excellent work Bob, great to see that there are still a crane available that can be used from the rails with no overhead wires about. Far cry from Dads day of the 75 ton Cowan Sheldon steam breakdown cranes . Regards Steve
@TheStephengthompson Thanks Steve, the brake down unit had to travel down from Bescot. There was an overhead cable beyond the crane, but it had been isolated for safety reasons. Trains and lorries these days are too light for a 75 ton crane to be called.....Bob
@HSTcallum It looks in a bad way, some shots it looks like the cab has COME OFF. If the cab has come off from the rest of the unit it will probs go for scrap, otherwise it should be repaired but it will take a long time.
@1madaboutguitar The lorry and a trailer carrying bales of hay were on the crossing behind the unit, and the lorry was pushed along the track to its current position on impact....Bob
The lorry might be intimidating on the road but it aint no match for a train. Lucky that wasn't earlier because 6B13 would have possibly dragged that down the line about half a mile. I think that the 175 looks more damaged than it actually is, because that cab is the crumple zone so its designed crumple on impact, its only a fiberglass cab after all, probably a class 70 would look similar if it was involved in a accident, maybe not the whole cab because they are a little higher than 175's.
