The fundamental reason for our going into Iraq was because Iraq thumbed its nose at WMD weapons inspections, refused to let inspectors verify either the absense or presence of WMD's, and forced the world into a game of high stakes "chicken". Iraq lost that game to the US and UK when we went in to find out for ourselves.
Our invasion of Iraq was NEVER about ties between Iraq and al Quaeda, real or imagined. Saddam bet wrongly that he could pawn us indefinitely, and lost the bet, and his Country.

That one's easy. Iraq is mandated to allow inspectors in to verify that WMD's are not in Iraq's possession.
Iraq thumbs its nose at the US refusing inspections, and refusing to deny that it does not have WMD's.
We are forced to go with troops and war planes to search for and dispose of any WMD's. No WMD's are found.
Does that mean they were never there? No. Does it mean they may now be elswhere? Maybe. Does Iraq have WMD's to wield against us now? No.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
