  • That is a Bullied Pacific class loco working on British Railways (Southern area) working a special train possibly carrying a "Cathedrals Express" headboard.. Note the third rail electrified line. Official maximum speed is 75mph and probably doing at around that speed. It has the British Railways. It has the old British Railways crest on the tender.

Well short of the worlds fastest steam train - Mallard - set in 1938 of 126mph.

    .

  • z jaką prędkością jeździ ten pociąg? przekroczył 175 km/h?

  • How fast is she actually going? Looks pretty fast.

  • Great British Railways i love them, Bring back steam

  • Troughs not trofs.

  • Struth.. I bet it sent shivers down your spine when that mighty engine thundered by. NIce clip.. wish I'd been there.

  • HOW FAST ? ABOUT 85 mph CRUISING SPEED ?max.speed ,as pack,or angles says, was just one second and a very skilfull engineer. i bet this steam train could hit 90 easily

  • right things about this vid and comments the vid has a british train in it that is not mallard. it is simply a herrertage train running an express and mallard is the fastest steam train we have proof it has got a gold badge on the side saying about its record run.

  • sorry to all you british and german adorers of these little pacifics, the a4 mallard was a nice engine, but in a race a union pacific FEF northern or a C&O J3 class would flat out woop the mallard, it's no match for a Lima or ALCO built northern locomotive, with their large fireboxes, 80 inch drivers and lightweight reciprocating parts, sorry, oh and i would love to see the mallard pull a 22 car passenger train made up of pullman heavy coaches, good luck

  • @packr72 according to the salamander illustrated directory Trains of the World pg 214 the A4 4-6-2 LNER all time record holder worlds speedrecord for steam locos 1938 a mallard 125 mph. Now although not as heavy or as breathtaking to look at like the big american locos they did all that was required of them for over 30 yrs so not too bad.

  • @18tangles well about the speed record, yes the mallard holds the title, simply cause no american railroad wanted it, 125mph in the 30s and 40s was scary as hell and that might scare away customers to other railroads, and the A4 mallard wasn't built to go that fast, only achieved that speed once mainly due to downhill track and a skilled engineer, still impressive by any stretch, but the mallard was also damaged during the run and was outta service for a awhile

  • @packr72 Our northerns and their pacifics were made for diffrent jobs but yes they would. To make it harder a race between a malland and a FEF-3 over the Union Pacific main line in Wyoming. Start in Cheyenne and go over 8000 foot Sherman Hill, over the Great Divide Basin (Continental Divide splits) so have to go over it twice, both times over 7000 feet, and to 7000 feet at Kemmerer on the other side of the state. A 300 mile test for any steam locomotive. The J3 and GS4 could run with the 844.

  • @Ericrated any Lima built Northern is an awesome machine that could compete with anything on the rails

  • @packr72

Yeah yeah whatever. At least we actually tried to get the record, and sucseeded and still hold it now.

  • @ClassA4Mallard you can have that record, to bad the milwaukee road's f7 hudson's have the record for the fastest scheldueled steam engines between stations, really though, a 4-6-2 pacific cannot keep up with a 4-8-4 nothern like the up844 or c&o 614

  • @packr72

Who says, has anyone every tried it. We'll probably never find out, okay, I dowbt it will be able to keep up, and it probably would not be aloud to go over 75MPH. But in the Glory days of steam, who knows.

  • @ClassA4Mallard its pretty simple actually, the up 844 has 80 inch drivers, the mallard has 80 inch drivers, the up844 has 8 driving wheels, the mallard has 6, the up844's boiler pressure 300psi, the mallard 250 psi, the up844 has a much larger firebox and has bigger cylinders, the up844 also uses lightweight reciporcating parts, bigger fire, more pressure, lighter driving gear, and more wheels means more power and speed

  • @packr72

Yeah, I suppose your right. I wonder how fast it would go if it was tried?

  • get it wright

  • this is a british loco its got the LNER late crest on the tender and its pulling southern region coaches

  • @boeing747ba - Surely you mean the British Railways late crest (post nationalisation)?

  • @boeing747ba

Actually, it's BR Late crest, and It is its a british loco, so good on ya posting this! It's a merchant navy class I think, going too fast to tell properly

  • cool

  • the German 18 201 is faster !!!

  • Steam high speed trains? Seems legit.

  • @C3805 TO EVERYONE THAT DOES NOT LIKE THIS VIDEO FUCK YOU

  • Shovel that coal!

  • @MarkGronan1988 the only reason why Mallard was the fastest, was because it was given the chance to be . . . . a lot of engines back then could have done it easily too.

  • Okay, are we talking, whole engine, or can it just be the boiler?

  • doy sir nigel gresleys ler a4 union pacific mallard is the fastest steam engine evar

  • @GLLCJ Union Pacific?

  • @TheWierdFish i think he means pacific

  • @AdamPBussey Silly yank. But otherwise, Pacific being the 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. And he got Gresley, A4 and most of LNER correct.

  • Yeah downhill....that totally counts.....oh brother.....he he he

  • The Mallard also was going downhill during it's high speed record.

  • @drbackjack It's average speed run was over uphill, downhill and flat sections.

  • Pennsylvania passenger trains pulled by double-headed T1s are(were) unofficially the fastest steam locomotives to exist. According to Don Ball Jr., they have been clocked at 127mph.

  • @DaTRiPpYPeoPLe Ok, damn the bunny buns.

  • @DaTRiPpYPeoPLe Well, it is not the world's fastest steam train. Not sure why you are so ticked at everyone, but cool off dude

  • @DaTRiPpYPeoPLe what engine model is this?

  • Sorry, she ain't the fastest and never was. The LNER 'A4' streamliner no.4468 'Mallard' got that distinction in 1938, a good few years before Clan Line was built, and about 20 years before CL was rebuilt into its present form. The fastest operation steam locomotive in the world today is German Pacific 18.201, which is certificated for 180km/h (about 112mph). All British main line steam is limited to 75mph.

  • Huh? What the theres another train hedded our way!!!!!!!! Bail out

  • It's still faster then Gordon on Thomas

  • I suppose it's one of the 30 Merchant Navy "Pacifics" CLAN LINE and these engines were utilised on some prestigious passenger workings such as the "Bournemouth Belle" but not the world's fastest steam turns. The fastest steam runs were between London and Edinburgh or Bristol at speeds of over 100 mph.

  • Its not enough to assert that this is the fastest; you must back your claim up. I wonder which currently operating steamer is the fastest.

Sooner or later, Norfolk & Western J Class #611 might fit the bill, it it is ever returned to steam again.

  • Well that's Exaggerating, that' not the FASTEST.

  • good film but...

MALLARD IS THE FASTEST STEAM TRAIN EVER (not now because it sits in a museum)

  • Mallard is the fastest steam engine in the world, officially being recorded at the speed of 203km/h

  • WoooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • itz as fast as a wap4 of india

  • you know i have not seen a steam train , seen a steam locomotive i fired them in the steam days on B.R. steam trains hahhahaha

  • @MarkGronan1988 Mallard is a steam engine not a steam train, a train is a loco be it steam, diesel or electric, and a set of coaches....

  • not the fastest, malard engine is fastest not the flying scotsman

  • @scotchtapedude That isn't Flying Scotsman, that's a rebuilt Merchant Navy Class engine.

  • @scotchtapedude its a rebuilt Merchant Navy Class not flying scotsman

  • @TheCinepod 4468 'Mallard' was chosen because she was just the right age, I think about 8 months old (Not sure on the exact age and I can't be bothered to Google it) not 4 weeks old and not yet run in, and not 4 years old when she would be tired. She was also reported as a good runner (Every loco had a different 'personality' some were faster, some were more efficient and some were godawful, even of the same class.) No other class of loco could have done it, they tried.

  • not good

    fool video and not yours

  • not good

  • 2 points here 1. This videos isnt yours i seen it on another account with all hes videos. and 2. Its not The world fastest steam loco is Mallard AKA Sir Nigel Gresley

  • @jorash123 Mallard and SNG are two totally different locos....... same class,

  • @MrJezza31 your right

  • really great shot mate with blazing whistle, and going some, enjoyed that, cheers.

  • Looks like a Bulleid Pacific passing Micheldever, to me. Great action in any location!

  • It's not fast as even other A4s. Have some look around by searching A4 class as key word. Especially 60019 Bittern (currently Dominon of New Zealand) and 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley. They still run very fast.

  • Wow. One damn fast train! Great shot!

  • A4 4468 Mallard is the fastest in the world, not this crapy thing, GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!

  • @ClassA4Mallard I can't beilieive what I had seen! I mean really, the french TGV beat that by 231.16 MPH with a top speed of 357.16 MPH... That's more then TWICE the speed of mallard. Looks like DaTRiPpYPeoPLe isn't the only one which got their facts wrong.

  • @Ben31337l

Wow. If you bring modern train to against over 70 years old steams!!! And If you want to bring the real wold speed record of Bullet Train kind,,,. Japan always holds fastest one! Magnetic one!

Anyway, For the steam locos, The Mallard is the wolrd speed record keeper!

  • @Ben31337l i think he means fastest steam loco....

  • @laservader1 Yea, I know.

  • @Ben31337l

Actualy, your getting your facts wrong. The French TVG is a Eletric loco, Mallard is the Fastest STEAM locomotive in the world, and has been since 1938. So, before posting the crap that you have, actually try and find out what I mean.

  • @Ben31337l Any train fan would tell you that the TGV is not a steam locomotive. Whereas the mallard is. It does not take a genius to know that.

  • @Ben31337l

The TVG? Okay, thats not that crap speed wise!!!

  • @ClassA4Mallard Oh and by the way, the TGV is NOT a locomotive, it's a multiple unit.

  • @Ben31337l

Thanks for the correction, I Just think they are the same, but there not!

  • @ClassA4Mallard No problem mate. :-)

  • how fast is that 76 mph

  • @mquiroz90

Probably about that, the British steam locos are limted to 75MPH on Mainline, they are trying to get permission for new build to get up to 90MPH as it's new and would be safe.

  • Gegen unsere 18 201 lahm jede 01 ist schneller. Na ja was solls Lokomotiven bauen konntet Ihr sowieso noch nie richtig !

  • Regarding Mallard's trip:

    1) It wasn't measured by the mileposts, it had a dynamometer car behind the tender which has highly calibrated measuring devices. It did hit 126mph, if only for a moment. Charles Rous Martin was on City of Truro's record run.

    2) It was pulling seven coaches, not three.

    3) It was not an axle bearing that ran hot, but the inside big end.

Also, this is WilHayfield's video, not DaTRiPpYPeoPLe's. If you want to see more of the same, go to WilHayfield's page.

  • Thumbs up for Amtrak Trains and their magnificent Tracks!

  • Thumbs up if ponies took you here

  • A Southern Railway Bullied heavy pacific (rebuilt Merchant Navy) class locomotive such as this one is capable of about 110mph on a rolling road. The Gresley-designed LNER A4 pacific was capable of 126mph in common use although they rarely reached this speed. The loco shown here, 'Clan Line' by the looks of it is the fastest locomotive on the Southern Railway but not the fastest in the world!

  • @7822welshsteam ....ooohh.....I hear that the timing of the mile posts on that run of Mallards was " optimistic " by quite a bit , and that many are now only crediting "120 mph " . I know she burnt an axle box , and had to be returned to the sheds, and did not arrive at the station to greet the assembled crowd . I know there is a German loco that ran 120 regularly on service. I share the world steam record between 4 or 5 different locos. Mallard is just one....but she is a beauty

  • This is also a British Southern Railway 4-6-2 , though I'm not sure what class.

  • This vid is false advertising. I clicked play expecting to see Mallard. Thumbs down from me.

  • How is that puffing billy? Puffing billy (NA class narrow gauge loco) could never, ever, ever go that fast. And that IS NOT AUSTRALIA, IT IS BRITAIN.

  • i only care for the vid and that is a fine one, what a fast steam train,

  • WRONG!!

  • The Mallard (Pride of England) is the fastest steam train in the world.

  • @whitbyjet65 I'd say that 4079, Pendennis Castle is the Pride of Britain. She was found to be smaller, more powerful and more efficient than the LNERs Pacifics. She ran for years in Australia then was repatriated and is poised to make a glorious return a few years from now at Didcot Railway Centre. Mallard is also only a steam locomotive or engine. A train is an engine, plus rolling stock.

  • Nope mallard still the fastest long before my time but as a lover of steam trains only 1 word too describe mallard LEGEND!

  • Mallard is the fastest steam train you pinhead! And that train on your video is about 80 mph and Mallard goes about 126 mph and Flying Scotsman, btw stolen vid.

  • I'd say that engine was doing about 75-80mph

  • is this 35005 can pac i saw the mhr brake

  • MALLARD IS THE FASTEST YOU LYING BASTARD! BRITISH PRIDE! OH YEAH!

  • you do a realise folks that this is a TROLL video !!!!

deliberately postested with incorrect and inflammitory content to provoke reaction to its ridiculously miss informed title.

  • YOU IDIOT mallard 4468 is the fastest steam train ever and that is a rebuilt merchant navy class (british) not a puffing billy. GET IT RIGHT (and don't copy other peoples videos)

  • I see a lot of bickering here. That was definitely a fast train, and let history determine what the fastest steam locomotive in the world is or was. Most of the steam locomotives like the mallard, the flying scotsman, etc have been retired. Before making a claim, back it up with proof.

  • @railfan78559

You sir deserve a link of proof,

    wikipedia$org/wiki/LNER_Class_A4_4468_Mallard (replace $ with .

Now how can oyu call your self a railfan if you don't even know the history of steam and the worlds fastest steam engine?

  • some people will plagiarise anything these days..it's a crap copy of an excellent railway video by Mr W.Hayfield..and doesn't do any justice at all to the original......so go suck on that Mr Ne'er do well..........

  • Flying scotsman is the worlds most famous steam train

  • what town is this when you take the video shot of this train?

  • 1 thats not the fastest train

    2 its not australian

3 mallard is the fastest train

  • Correct me if I am wrong but that locomotive looks like it comes from the southern railway, so it could not have been australian

  • @DTChapman1 and the stock is British.

  • @DTChapman1 yes it is a southern railway engine a lot went out to ozz for the centenary of steam in the 80s but don't think it was shot in ozz but saying that the speed it was going a don't think they are aloud to go that fast in UK so don't know dosent look like ozz to me

  • @DTChapman1 question dose any one know where it was shot love to know some one out there will know

  • The fastest Steam engine ran up to 126 mph. AND THAT TRAIN WAS THE MALLARD!

  • When STEAM TRAINS accelerated to 88 mph, they traveled in time!

  • I think that PRR #7002 SHOULD hold the record

  • Where was this filmed?

  • That is just going as fast as any other passenger steam locomotive

  • Hmmmm that looks like Canadain Pacific, Fast, but not the world record holder, that would have to be going at least 50mph MORE to break the record, as those locomotives are limited to 75mph on British Rails.

  • Wasn't the Pennsylvania S1 of 1939 the fastest steam train ever built??? It reached 236 Km/h (148 mph) if I'm not wrong.

  • steam train at speed 1 is better

  • look at 'steam traine at speed 2'

  • That is a fast locomotive (That is the Tornado)

But the fastest steam engine is the A4 Mallard express

    134 mph I believe

  • @marioclub12 That wasn't tornado. I think it was Canadian Pacific, a Southern Region Merchant Navy class locomotive.

  • @marioclub12 No, the loco in this video is 34067 Tangmere, a Southern Railways West Country Class.

But yes, Mallard is the fastest steam locomotive.

  • @MrRWJP In fact, I think that was actually 35005 Canadian Pacific, a Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class

  • erm no :)

  • I only need 88 mile per hour!

  • Mallard is offically the fastest steam locomotive, with a Milwaukee RR locomotive rumored to do 140MPH which can't be proven as the speeds were only worked out with times, plus speeds of these hight were illegal in the US. Finally, Puffing Billy (Victorian Railways 2-6-2T in NG) are only capable of 20MPH. You jackolan76 are a moron

  • Worlds Fastest Steam Train?

Can you compare her with the Union Pacific 3985 high-balling at 70mph?

You'd have to factor the kph with American mph as well as the size of drive wheels she has too...

  • The worlds fastest steam train to this day is Staniers Pacific A1 'The flying scotsman'. It's top speed is 102.2 MPH and has NEVER, EVER been exceeded by any steam locomotive in the world.

  • @jackolan76 Where on eaarth have you got facts like that from? Stanier designed L M S Pacifics, amongst many others, the A1's were designed by Nigel Gresley, later Sir Nigel, for the G N R in 1921. Furthermore the fastest steam locomotive in the world to this day is L N E R A4 Pacific 4468 Mallard which on July 3rd 1938 recorded a speed of 126 M P H, hope that helps.

  • @RallyStar In any case, the Flying Scotsman is an A3, not an A1!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz

Back in the 1920s though, it was a A1

  • Comment removed

  • @jackolan76 the speed record has never been OFFICALLY exceeded. the Pennsylvania Railroad's K-4, and T-1 were doccumented way exceeding 102.2 MPH, the T-1 was said to have hit the 140 MPH mark sevral times, but because the PRR didn'y have speedometers on their locomotives, (they calculated speed roughly by timing mile markers) they never got an offical speed, and never made any atempt at the offical record.

  • @delamaize @jackolan76 Wikipedia source:

" A technician charged with determining the cause of frequent poppet valve failures on the T1s claimed to have observed them being operated at speeds of up to 140 mph (225 km/h) between station stops in order to make up time on trains that had been delayed. "

  • Also: "Speeds at which these locomotives operated at could only be calculated using a dynamometer car or by timing the distance between mile markers as the Pennsylvania Railroad did not commonly install speedometers on the steam locomotives of the time period."

  • @delamaize

Not 100% sure on this but i think union pacific number 844 holds a strong record in steam engine speed being clocked at 125 Mph at a test track, and speaking of that engine its coming through kansas city next month on a route that was decided by popular vote :D

    wooot kc!

  • @Gman2A2 Yeah 844 is a beautifull Loco, But I am a fan of SP4449 and SP&S 700! I beleive that 844 is designed to support speeds of up to like 130. IIRC SP 4449 can maintain like 110. The PRR T-1 was way ahead of it's time, if traction control would have been avaible at that time, it would have probally never had such a short life. Because of the lack of traction control, Violent, damaging wheel slip on the front set of drivers was common with young, inexperenced engineeres.

  • @jackolan76 Who the fuck are you and where do you get your facts from ????? Fuck off !!!!!

  • @jackolan76 Everything in that comment is wrong.

Stanier did not build the A1s.

Flying Scotsman is not an A1, it is an A3.

Flying Scotsman is not the fastest Steam Locomotive in the world.

  • @MrRWJP It was built a Gresley A1, but was rebuilt into an A3 after it was built.

  • @bennymilk Yeah, I know, I just didn't want to confuse the ridiculous number of idiots commenting on this video.

  • @jackolan76 oh wow.....are you really that thick?

Stanier = LMS - Flying Scotsman = LNER

When Flying Scotsman set its record for over 100mph it was an A3, although it was built a Gresley A1. That exact 102.2mph reading is the reading from when City of Truro allegedy broke the 100mph barrier. It has been exceed many times, The Silver Jubillee LNER express streamlined train frequently hit 110mph every day.

  • @bennymilk Sorry but that's wrong. Flying Scotsman was still an A1 when it clocked 100 mph in 1934, it wasn't rebuilt as an A3 until 1947.

  • @ianepb Sorry, you are correct, my mistake!

  • @camposwilliam62 UK preserved Steam Loco''s are limited to 75mph even on modern track, so there it is.

  • @camposwilliam62 In case you haven't noticed any of the other comments we use mph here, too and it's not American mph. We invented the imperial system you use today.

  • oh my god.

  • ohooo.....the best

  • UP 4-8-4 No. 844 in the U.S. travels just as fast, sometimes up to 79 MPH. Also the whistle on this engine sounds identical to the steam freight locomotive whistles on the Reading (pronounced RED-ing) RR here in the U.S.

  • "Train" is what the loco hauls - I think you mean 'World's Fastest Steam Locomotive'. And anyway, you're wrong - the world's fastest steam locomotive is 'Mallard' which currently holds the record

  • that horn is hauntingly awesome!

  • I've seen faster stream trains.

  • See looking through the comments, I dont think anyone cares about the us, and talking from experience from firing many loco's I'd rather have the Scotsman over clan line any day

  • 1. That isn't the fastest steam train

    2. Thats not the puffing billy

    3. thats not your video, it belongs to wil hayfield

  • @34002salisbury i that you shram?

  • @34002salisbury The union of south africa is faster and thats not even the fastest in the world!

  • Sorry, thats a fast train, but the Mallard holds the record for the fastest train. Not locomotive... train. Nevertheless, nice catch of a fast train.

  • @EliteCaptainGadget also the flying scotsman

  • @LegoArtsProduction No doubt it is fast, but it doesn't hold the record. What it does hold, and nevertheless this is important, is the first train to reach 100mph on a passenger run. And it did that through the county of Leicestershire, UK when it was travelling from London to Edinburgh.

  • Comment removed

  • @EliteCaptainGadget Sorry but I agree with EliteCaptainGadget, facts are facts. LNER Mallard holds the officially recorded record. There are many contenders (like the PRR 7002 in America), but only one steam locomotive holds an officially recorded record.

In all fairness, the engine and consist in this video is hauling arse.

  • @Politcalamity Indeed. To me, it looks like that train was doing about 80mph... which is considerable...

  • @Politcalamity indeed, facts ARE facts . the fact is that Mr C R Martin was a tad optimistic with his stop watch as the mile markers went past ! The fact is that Mallard was NOT hauling a regular load, but only 3 carriages. The fact is she burnt an axle box, had to be put to the sheds, and could not steam to the station to collect her reward. But in a way, you are correct......the FACT is, that an A4 can haul arse....but so can many other. Anything 110+ gets my vote.

  • wait I thought that the mallard or flying scotsman were the worlds fastest locomotive
