ok this may be a stupid question, & i know it's just a movie but when doc said "your future hasn't been written yet, so make it a good one..." doesn't that contradict movies 1 & 2, especially #2-- since the sole reason they had to go into the future was to "fix" what would become marty's life in 30 years?

Well, thats right! That phrase,contradicts all the trilogy but that's why the Doc said that, because he was trying to change everything, after all that happend he realise that was on a mistake. Always you can change your future no matter what happend.

That´s the reason why Marty should destroy the time machine when he got back in 1985 at the end of Part III. Doc was and is a scientist but he discovered the dangers of time travel. So the excitement of discovering something (in the past or future) is nothing in compare to change the future or past (in a bad way). I think he even means it a little in a poetic way. And if god wanted us to do time travels, well then we would all be born with a DeLorean ;)

And yes he rebuilt a train to use as a time machine but i think he will only observe from the distance and not getting involve in any kind of trouble. If so you are right and the whole trilogy would make no sense at all. But any how, there great to watch and entertaining and that´´s something isn´t it?
