narrator is describing the husband he is a compay man never questioning always doing as asked with a smile on his face and at night he goes home dead inside to his wife who is also dead inside and privatly dreams of revenge for the many slights and insults he endures because he cant say no

but I do agree, It does seem like a relationship,
