  • We played this last year in honors band and man all I can say is it was AWESOME to play haha. We also played it at the ABMA festival and we got all 1's haha. I play French horn

  • we played this in high school... im a freshman... i only played about half of the actual notes!

  • Gf French Horn 32nds

  • I played this in high school wind ensemble and it was a bitch. We only had four percussionists, so I ended up playing about eight different parts. And we played it at about 210bpm.

  • :O I love it! My band might play it for festival this may.... I'm scared! :P

  • @3:40 i realy liked that part. great video and wonderful music!

  • @3:40

  • Lol, i play the french horn...and those 32nd notes kick my butt. I've only played for like 8 months though. Sad how I'm the only french horn in my band =/

  • I am 1st chair horn..my conductor was amazed when I first played this music... I freacking owned that music!!! we played for festival!! We made all 1s.

  • Great job.

However, kids wearing their marching band uniforms... that is literally the most strange thing I have ever seen on an honor band stage. I come from the central district of North Carolina and we were always told very strict instructions on what to wear for these sorts of performances. Concert black would have been a much classier look for a band of this caliber.

  • this was the best song we ever played at my highschool last year! was SOOOOO much fun! our band director was conducting it during one rehearsal then yelled "MOOOOVE"! and sped up, we happily oblliged! i played snare during it, was the best song ever!(i still remember the parts somehow from last year lol)

  • We KILLED this song at our concert!!

  • Holsinger is a great Composer, not a conductor... he kinda went a little crazy there with the tempo. I know he wrote the piece, but if the group is struggling during a performance, you take it a wee bit slower. besides, Its a honor band, they just got there music and have only been playing together for two days!

Also, did he tell the story about his band director who died during pictures at an Exhibition?

  • WHERE are THE TEMPLE BLOCKS? best part!!!

  • this is beast.

  • im playin this song , the acension and el capitan at six flags next friday, and for my concert we are playin these 2 songs along with four dances from west story

  • Oh man. My concert is in about five weeks, and we still sound terrible at this song. I'm so nervous.

  • trumpets haave no dynamics =( they blasted so much

  • @tinikristi1022 it seems like that's all trumpets know how to do lol

  • Trumpets need it cleaner in the beginningI'd say it's almost a few clicks too fast from when my band played ithmmbut still, sounds pretty good.

  • the trumpets played a wrpng note at 1:35 and the bass drum came in at the wrong beat at 1:42. I cant wait to play this song at our six flags trip. this is one of my favorites

  • Ehh, the speed kinda kills it. Way too fast, it sounds like the band can barely keep up.

  • played this song in highschool band it was BA

  • played this song in highschool band it was BA

  • flute and clarinets fly in this song! when i first heard it on recording, i was like, "No. not happening." now, im in love with this song and cant wait to play it up to tempo

  • i would have like to have traded speed for clarity and crispness in the song, but very exciting!

  • is this ATSSB 2009?

  • he he french horn runs i love it

  • Comment removed

  • That's the composer that is directing it so dont argue with his speed lol

  • I despise that oboe part... I feel like my fingers are going to fall off. Lol. but it's so fun

  • the song as written at 176, so it should be played at 176. like our band,

  • @Cheesecake2k who cares dude.

  • our band nearly went as fast as this and did really well. Our clarinets worked really REALLY hard for it too. It was the best performance that we had at RHS.

  • too fast

  • i agree.

  • i agree

  • Jessizzle27 Is Right Robert W. Smiths Locomotive Chase Is 20x Better

  • ...The extra speed kind of ruined it. ...Still epic though. =)

  • thats david holsinger conducting, i think he knows the music he wrote

  • @ChocolatePheonix your right the speed does kill it. were playin it at my highschool slightly slower and i think it sounds better. were prolly playin it at 155 because are winds are speds but i mean....

  • it was written at 176. the slowness kills it.

  • @fightoflife4

Dude seriously? This is way more than 176. This may be pushing 200.

  • @atomiceraser

the song has a tempo set in the high 200s...this is how its supposed to be played...this the original intent was a fast song...hense "pursuit" its not "abrams walk in the park" its close to 250s if i remember

  • @LilRedHeadDrummerBoy could you not lie please, if you actually played the piece or was able to read at the time you played, you would remember that the tempo is in the 170s. depending on the style of music, Tempo is not literal, you can slow it up and speed down. In this case you should play fast but don't push the group over the edge.

  • @LilRedHeadDrummerBoy nah its 176 but its still hella fast-tough song, especially on clarinet

  • i played this at my school on bari sax, not that hard, i prefer to play robert w. smith's music

  • @jessizle27 woooo barii

  • @jessizle27 cause you played baritone sax, your part is not as complicated as others.

  • man, this song goes 176! omg!

  • i'm screwed. i can't play this tomorrow for my band teacher.

  • isnt this a little faster than it is supposed to be played? still, thats takes a lot of talent!

  • I tried to read my part while listening... this gonna be fun.

  • ah, great song to play trumpet on :)

  • epic song, and soo hard to play. i don't know how i got through it. but i LOVE hearing it. this is about the tempo we took it. i love 3:16 to the end.. those were my favorite parts to play. :D especially the ending. ;D

  • and im only in 6th grade! AHH

  • that bells part is insane! I have to play that next semester but slower! I need help bad! I am so screwed

  • Too fast to enjoy..

  • JUST PLAYED THIS AT EVERY FISHER HALL LAST NIGHT and i must say that playing it fast really messed yall up... nothing was flush=/

  • Umm dont mean to brag but my band played this better when I was in 8TH GRADE and I played 1st and 2nd French Horn. We played it perfectly and it was my 1st year on French Horn. Honestly back when I was in 8th grade i could PWN all the french horn players in this vid .

  • hell yeah! my high school band is playing this. fucking insane

  • At 1:36 the trumpets starts to rush :(

  • i don mean to offend but does it feel like the music is tearing

  • What school?

  • my band director was so tired of directing this song that he only was directing with one hand and sweating perfusely lol

  • i played this song!! fun song!! very technical

  • trombones ftw! lol

  • agreed!!!!

  • Fail! We played this last year in our hs band and we got a standing ovation! Abram's ftw!

  • love it! yayyy oboe!

  • lol i just got this party as a freshman in the highest up in band class so im with the senoirs and stuff and ai play bassoon

by the time i was done with the song my hand wouldnt move couse of all the low parts lol

  • hahaha; the low parts did suck on the bassoon, but i wouldn't be able to be heard...understand..ghetto bassoon (held up by duct tape and hope)

  • GO OBOE!!! we played this last year and i still have a hard time with it.

  • I can't hear the flutes...or the Picc???

  • now thats a horn sextion...there were only 2 of us and we just about died everey time

  • love the second clarinet.

the zooming in was convenient too...

    was he special or something?

  • i played this one in high school too. it was fun. i was going to play oboe for it but they needed a good mallet percussionist for the marimba 1 part. people from other bands at our competition came up to me and said all they saw of my hands was a blur because i was moving so fast. good times!

  • when we played this our marimba player went through 3 pares of mallets 'cus they kept shredding.

  • Ah... I played piccolo for this song back in high school, and I switched to flute when the piccolo was playing... The piccolo/trumpet duet always brings tears to my eyes at the memory. I love this song so much. It moves me.

  • I loved playing this one on tuba, it was so awesome

  • Heck yea Man!!! I played this last year in High School and it I would have to say is still the Best piece of music that I have EVER played!

We all owe our thanks do David Holsinger though for this AMAZING music!

  • i love the story behind this piece.

  • the T-bone part destroys your tongue

  • bassoon too, especially if you don't know how to "flick" your tongue lightly enough to play staccato that fast at the end without causing your tongue to bleed. luckily i figured out how to do that before the concert so i could actually play, haha.

  • I agree the oboe part is so much fun, especially since it goes up to high G's!!! If I have a good reed I can get it, but a lot of times it just is like blaahhh!

  • the oboe part is so much fun but your dead by the end

  • I love that sort of howl sound the french horns make at 3:20 my school's horns sound more like dying cows because they play with no confidence...anyhoo, epic piece, love the ending. Tuba part pwns if anyone asks.

  • i play bass clarinet and this is quite a good one but incantation and dance beats it

  • Agreed! I was so upset though, because I switched to Bb clarinet this year to get ready for college auditions and stuff, but I originally played bass for our wind ensemble. Go figure the year I switch instruments the bass clarinets finally get awesome parts in Incantation and Dance. :P

  • LOVE incantation and dance! the bass clarinet part rocks that song. i played bassoon for that song. also fun ^_^

  • where was this video?

  • Really good... my band is playing this for large group state contest and it's really awesome. My favorite part is 3:30.

  • love this song! trumpet 1 part i love my runs

  • The Tuba part is fun.

  • Agreed, good sir. Tuba wins, period.

  • agree I played this 3 times total (once in band, twice by myself (trombone, oboe and marimba) ). Only part harder than oboe part is marimba part.

  • This song is like IMPOSSIBLE on the oboe. haha

There are notes so far off the staff, I don't even know what they are.

    This band is good!

    :)

  • 3:16 gives me chills everytime when we play this, nothing better than a falling A-flat scale from 2 different instrument ranges

  • My Wind Ensemble at my high school is playing this peice. I play the Baritone Saxophone for this song and I love it. This is by far my favorite song I have every played.

This band sounds really good. Better them mine at the moment. We are still working on this song. My favorite part is measure 82 (for Bari Sax at least) that starts around 2:01 on this clip.

Anyways Nice job with the song!!!

  • @sargesarah no way , i play bari sax forr this as well, its pretty intense but i hate the part were you go from low d up to middle d over and over again, its hard to hear yourself so i cant tell whether im actually hitting it, another good peice that we are playing is called danzas cubanas, check it out, all the recordings are shit though

  • @TDCBro

Same here I played bari for this too

  • @TDCBro you know if you go on jwpepper . com and type in the song there might be a profecional recording lol...and i used to play bari too! going from low D to first octive D isn't THAT hard..allthough over and over might be annoying lol. i play alto now, and were doing a peice where we do that a few times...except its runs after runs...wicked fun..and were playing stevie wonder in concert! its AWESOME

  • I love this song 3rd trombone =D man this song owns

  • Ive played both 3rd Trombone and Euphonium for this piece....this is absolutely my favorite wind band piece ever.

  • lol the 2nd trumpet(s) is louder than the first..thats cool that they actually got to play under holsinger!

  • haha yeah i loved the french horn gliss

  • We're practicing this at our high school and I just love it!

  • i so totally loved playing this

  • two years ago I got to participate at a music camp that he was directing at. We played this song. That was quite enjoyable. Hearing it again brings back memories.

  • we're doing this song in band im technically first chair flute there's a senior but she's a figurehead. XD

  • Played this song last year, I was playing Xylo for this piece and god do I miss playing that part... I still play it once and a while, my band still asks my teacher to play this song just for kicks... now it's just Ride... Testimonium, Gavorkna and... Army Ants Boogie... Sad that you can't play the same song twice for competition where I'm at :-(

  • First chair alto saxophone here. (Not for this band though, another school) we're playing this piece and everyone loves it. Yes, I'm in highschool...I'm a sophomore. The thing is that gives us the ability to play such a piece is our love and will to play a song like this. Hopefully we'll have ours filmed too. That is why highschoolers can do level 6...if we love it enough, it is possible. Thumbs up for my comment to those who agree.

  • If David Holsinger were conducting at a concert I was filming at I'm pretty sure I'd be filming him.

  • I did :-)

  • im playing first chair flute for this song in my all guys high school, so im playing only chair flute. the part is unbelievably difficult

  • My high school band is playing this. i'm the 1st chair french horn. 3:05 to 3:16 really sucks to play. horns did very well in this video! i love this song

  • i know what ur saying, im second F horn, that part makes those 32nd note rips seem like child's play. all around a great song, i hope my band sounds this good in april, we're playing it in DC. power to the horns dude!

  • I know what you're both saying. That part really sucks to play, but I think I'm starting to get it. Kinda. :p

And the 32nd note rips is one of my favorite parts!

    Love this song.

  • He wrote this song at the tempo of 176, and he conducted it at 195... wow!!! That's amazing!!!

  • omg, is this a highschool band?

how did u get david holsinger to conduct it? thats sooo kool!

i love this peice, it's pretty simple for brass, ;)

  • im playing in my high school band for the spring concert this year

ill be the guy hitting the triangle and playing the bongos

  • i was so afraid the trumpets couldnt hang in the beginning... as a section lead that is my worst fear for a young section :-/ solid though you pushed through

  • i play the flute part for my schools wind ensemble :)

so much fun to play and listen to!!!! :)

  • i played this 2 years ago in high school. and i loved it! you guys did an excellent job. =] my school only had the damn song for 2 months and we played it, so uts no the best but its still pretty beast haha

  • Looks at flute part...ughh my head...

  • I played this song a few years ago. I loved playing it and still love listening to it.

  • Good job flutes! I played this is high school. Awesome song

  • im playing it now as a freshmen and i love its so much fun

  • Euphonium part in this composition is amazing, I played it in High School as a freshman.

  • Love This Song. Especially playing the tenor sax part, 30+ measures of G lol. Playing it at a concert next month =]

  • i remember playing this and DAVID HOLSINGER himself was our conductor too!!!! IT was awsome!!!

  • o god, the 34 some measers of tenor part......uhh, i love this song, and that part is just LONG!

  • lassiter played this piece for our opener this year...its an amazing piece to play and march...i love the horn rips at the end of this song.... i remember when david acually visited lassiter because him and mr. watkins are good friends... he said he likes to take this piece at like 200 and thats wat it sounds like hear... i wish we could have marched it at 200... :) GO TRUMPETS!!! >P

  • This song is our opener again this year! But we changed it up a little.

  • D. W. Daniel High school this year is marching "Exaltations, The Music of David Holsinger

the coolest part is the last 7 Mesure's of the Drum line for bass.

  • Think the flute parts are hard... I played Xylophone, Marimba and bells on it in High School- it took months of practice. Acually had to memorize it because it went so fast! Oh, to be in band again!

  • yes, the flute parts ARE hard...

    but then.. i never practise...XD

  • I feel your pain, I played marimba on this during my senior year of HS back in 1999. I was pretty new to concert percussion, but had more piano background than the other drummers. Was able to play it pretty well, aside from that damn scale run at 3:01 or so. I think I just randomly glissandoed it lol. But it was still a great "part of a team" experience, since the marimba is the rhythmic bedrock for the first 1/4 of the piece.

  • whoa... conducted by david holsinger?!?! awesome!!! such a fun song to listen to, but even more fun to play! great job!

  • i agree with Stu228, but a very good piece. I also played it in high school. Our band was solid so it didn't take too much time to prepare but definitely one of my favorite songs and a tough song for most high schools to play. David Holsinger is the man.

  • love this piece. i played it when i was in high school

  • excellent job, how long did it take you guys to make this song sound this good, because my band is playing this and they are having a hard time with it. Thanks for taking your time to answer this. Once again great job, i like the harmony when both the baritone saxophone and bass clarinet come in at measure23.

  • this is awesome, btw, how long did it take your band to get it to this level right when you got this piece, because my band is trying this and we are having a hard time

  • There was some rushing/not together but over all it was good.

  • We played this song in symphonic band when I was a senior and my brother was a sophomore, and four years later we both still consider it the best thing we ever did in band. :) Technically challenging (God, those flute runs... my fingers ache just thinking about it), but very rewarding to play! GREAT song!

By the way, does an MP3 of this exist anywhere, and if so, could someone point me in the direction of it? My brother and I have been searching for one for a long time, to no avail...

  • OMG!!! that was all trombone!!!

    awesome job.

i also played trombone and this piece!!!

    TKHS class of 06

  • the very last note...trumpets...i am guessing the firsts...GREAT JOB! It was perfect length...it didn't hold over...it was a great ending! love this piece...played it in high school myself...one of my personal favorites! Great!

  • my high school band played this....definitely one of my favorites EVER!!! we rocked... =]

  • This is bar far my favorite somg of all time, and the fact that david is conducting the somg is just as cool. Played it 3 years are on euphonium... lets just say i can play it better now lol

    Great job on it.

  • I love Holsinger :) He conducted us for All-State in Texas this year

  • were playing this now, but im having a hard time on my euphonium part...

  • Does anyone know if this piece is available on Itunes??? so gorgeous!!

  • Wow

I never played it this fast.

I can't say it's the most hardest tune I've played, but it's up there in the top five.

It's also a favorite of mine.

  • the french horn part at 3:21 is cool

  • Itz better at 2:28

  • bro thats all trombone i played it before

  • It's trombone and horn.

And I have to agree with acji5... 3:21 is the better part, but both are cool.

  • we're learning this in our high school, and we have like 2 more weeks, and weve been practicing for about 2 weeks. i dont know how well we will do

  • I've played this piece in concert band last year. I got to play it with Bass Clarinet! It was the hardest thing I've played yet. I play French Horn now.

  • omg!!! I met him last Saturday....and had no clue he was an eminence in music...if I wasn't unaware of his works, I'll probably had asked him better questions..... :(

  • I love the Horn part at 2:28. R U in a music school?

  • us euphoniums have the trumpet part there, i like it a lot.

but i do like horns when they can play it right, like my brother isnt really that good, and its hard to listen to lol

  • true this is fastest ive heard it

  • My God..... what a great piece of music!! I must applaude you on your great articulation, especially in the end! What an honor to be conducted by such a great man and a great composer!

  • I totally played this w/ Holsinger as the conductor!!!! :-) He said we played like Gangbusters

  • we played this last year just a tad bit faster. it was pretty sweet. plus horn rips are amazing! :)

  • we played this song last night at lincoln center, we beasted this song and got a standing ovation from the audience!

  • fastest i've heard

  • If you like this, you'd probably like Liturgical Dances by Holsinger too!

  • We are about to play this, all I can say is that I hope we are as good as you guys! WOW!

  • ay what district are you in or what school do u go to cuz i live in detroit and go to dsa

  • haha--I loved this song when we played it...it's fun with all the speed!

  • hey were playin this for festival all i can say is i hope we can get like them!!!!

  • we're playing it festival too..

too bad our band sucks :<
