when the violin solo is joined by the viola the effect is sheer magic and makes me want to weep.........I have fallen in love with this piece good and proper
this is MAGICAL. The entire violin concerto is simply outstanding - truly an amazing masterpiece. Now, for those new-complexity freaks who cannot hear music, only care about how a score heavily notated with cascades of nonsensical notes looks like, and are incapable of understanding what creativity is about, please keep your insignificant, pseudo-intelectual, musically talentless remarks to yourselves.
@Bagas well said indeed! "pretentious trash" is what that "new crap-complexity is". A bunch of talentless hypocrites. and I am not defending new-romantic, conservative or any new-anything!! I am talking about music, which is something those freaks cannot understand - they are too worried about how their scores will look like.
@Justino111 You have to admit the concepts are interesting. The score itself becomes the art, as well as the performers inability to preform the music
I hope you "geniuses" realize that this is only part of the Concerto, the Passacaglia Lento Intenso, I believe. Mvt. IV. Try watching the other parts of this brilliant piece, and tell me you can play that.
@xephyr417 Dude, stop being (or pretending) not to know that even among the best soloist musicians in the world, scores are usually used for 20th century works. Probably it is due to the unfamiliarity with many of contemporary composers' techniques, performance directions, even musical content itself. There are exceptions, but you have to admit that it IS really hard to memorize something like the Schoenberg violin concerto, if you don't want to fake it. It's not "un-pro" at all!
@xephyr417 Probably, yes, which is why we quite admire it when Mitsuko Uchida plays the Schoenberg Piano Concerto completely from memory. But since very few people do it, it's not a requirement, nor is it an embarrassment if you can't do it. To be willing to get down and practice a concerto which is relatively new, less well-known, and not proven as a "timeless classic" is already quite laudable, from many people's (especially composers'!) perspectives.
@physphilmusic Rightly so because if nobody took the time to practice and give proper attention to "newer" works then nothing that isn't already would ever become well known or a timeless classic. It's like not having job experience and not being to get hired without it.
I have my opinion and nothing - not even peer pressure - can change it. I never follow the crowd. However, I make comments simply to get things off my chest, not to offend anyone. I may not know anything about music, but I know what I like. As far as I'm concerned, Ligeti is less than a mediocre composer and that's that. I do appreciate your opinions though. By the way, I also happen to think Mahler was a second-rate composer. Thanks.
@violinhunter2 Although music nowadays tends to be more or less completely subjective (you can say anything), there are still comments most people will consider stupid, and for good reason. Why do you think Ligeti is a "simpleton"? If you can justify that well, then you are entitled to hold your rogue opinion. Otherwise, you're just stupid. The fact that you compare this with Mozart seems to betray an unhealthy aversion towards anything 20th century.
@violinhunter2 I am afraid, you are the simpleton here; by brushing aside something you consider 'below' something else. all you do is brush aside the very thing that you hold dear. How Childish your comment is.
@xephyr417 I mean no offense, but I still don't understand why it's less professional to use sheet music in a situation like this. Will you explain to me your reasoning?
@Joebzzz always some dumb scrub that says that. just cuz i cant do it doesnt mean i cant have an opinion. i cant believe you wasted a comment with that.
The more of Ligeti I listen to, The more amazed and appreciate his work. it is simply outstanding.

Hey, he sounds extremely good, even with music. So does it really matter, as long as he sounds good? Not to me, at least.

The first ten measures of Mozart's Requiem are better than this entire concerto - throw it in the trash already. What a simpleton composer. Childish.
violinhunter2 1 year ago
@violinhunter2 You really must not know anything about Ligeti's music or 20th century music in general if you dismiss him as a 'simpleton' composer.

@xephyr417 it's usually acceptable for more contemporary pieces. even for auditions. i kind of agree, but maybe its a really long piece?

@xephyr417 Sviatoslav Richter did it in recitals with Chopin etudes. This is fine.
