  • My favorite song ever. Specifically the part that starts at 1:01.

  • Noone should be allowed to sell records, before they had been able to play this.

  • Awesome stuff. Wish i was able to see that today. On the subject of great prog. rock bands, at least Rush is still touring.

  • Where do i send my donation to the parish Father Tiresias?

  • Whose dumb idea was this old footage?? I want to see Bill and Phil ripping it out in 7/8!! I agree that Bruford is a much better sub than Chester, who always sounds like he is plodding along. Bill is so damn crisp and precise and his fills are so electrifying they almost equal Phil's own, at his peak. Which, for my money, was on Selling England. Saw the whole thing live at the Roxy in December of 73 and nothing else has ever come close. Saw Dream Theater a week ago and the kids think it is

  • For me, that ball could be a metaphor of economic globalization at its worst . Created by men. Then start screwing the lives of the common people, and everyone wants to stop it. But is too late.... It's too big.... Its motion is irreversible.

  • The Bill and Phil drum fill is great

  • that fuckin bass :D , makes mah nipples erected

  • Admittedly, since my teen years, my tastes have migrated from the complexity of prog to the simplicity of "poppier" music, but anyone who doesn't think this is an astounding piece of music must just not understand music very well. Long live Genesis.

  • My five and seven year old daughters and i play "AIR ALL INSTRUMENTS" to this song, when daddy listens to Seconds Out for the trillionth time - i know i say this on all my posts

  • This is just amazing talent being amassed. Arguably the two best drummers of the 70s pre-Peart coming into his prime. Great bassist and guitarist. And of course, arguably the most melodic keyboardist until Dream Theater's Kevin Moore hit the stage.

  • Rutherford is a monster!

  • Brutal!!! Fantastic!!!! super!!!!! collonut!!! la millor!!!!!! incomparable!!!!!! al·lucinant!!!! orgàsmic!!!!! meravellós!!!!! celestial!!! potent!!!! bonic!!!!! preciós!!!!

  • @jazemabo YOU SAID IT ALL MAN!!!!!!

  • @jode72 I agree with your comment 100%.

  • Amazing. I've listened to this song a thousand times easily and it gets better...

  • this is the first song my dad made me listen to. I was 2 at the time and I've been loving it ever since.

  • Tony is so much fucking damn fast, Was he ever a human ? :D

  • Bruford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Angelo Balzano.

    Angelo Balzano

  • @ThroughRock call it "snobby" all you want, but a fact is a fact. PG was responsible for the visual (just visual is all I'm saying) presentation of their music on stage. Who amoungst you would dispute that??? This is not beatification or hero-worship, it is true. After he left the remaining 4 didn't quite know how to visually present the music. AToTT tour used the PG formula of slides because that was all they had known. After that they, and every other band, did the lights and laser thing

  • J'ai jamais réussi à chopper les accords de Rutherford sur cette partie. Honte sur moi. Tout le reste je l'ai mais là va savoir ....

  • This is a prime example of how Genesis lost their visionary when Gabriel left. He had such a strong hold over how their music was presented visually to the world. I doubt that if he had stayed on they would have ever consented to doing that cheesy Trick of the Tail video. Does anyone remember the awful Robbery, Assault and Battery video. Never would have happened if Peter Gabriel was still with them. The remaining four had no idea how to present their music, and left it in the hands of others.

  • @pilates68 Gabriel was too much into visuals. Genesis has been all about music and Banks & Rutherford (especially Tony) composed most of Genesis music.

  • @pilates68 Sigh. Another snobby, retarded Gabriel-era fan. These videos are infested with them.

  • The Director thought he was being clever by interspersing old silent movie footage. Thanks a lot DICK!!! Who wants to see them perform this masterpiece in its entirety on film anyway? lets watch Buster Keaton while Genesis plays. IDIOT!!!!

  • Jesus Christ!!!.......why the old silent movie footage??? Can we not see the band perform this masterpiece in its entirety? Spare me the directors idiotic interperative concept.

  • I am responsble for 153 green thumbs, but who push 10 times red?

Wow, if you don t like this. you don t like music anyway.

    Genesis is in my blood.

  • 10 people were disco fans in 1976.

  • 1.33 is incredible. I mean, how can men create such beauty!everything's incredible, phil's drum fill, mike rutherford's bass pedal and how you can see him just bloody happy feeling the musica, tony's heavenly majestic keyboards...It's just strange that hackett (my favourite soloist from genesis) would leave at this part of the show, cause actually you only needed rythm 12string guitar played by mike, and ocassionally bass, but anyway, man, such magic!

  • Bruford

  • It was about 2:30 in the morning one mid-2007 night and I couldn't sleep. Finally deciding it was pointless to stare at the dark ceiling any longer, I turned on the TV. Flipping through the channels, I saw that this Genesis concert was on. Knowing nothing about them, I figured that it was better than being bored.

So, I changed to that channel and then this song came on.

How can you NOT become a Genesis fan after listening to this without any warning or expectations?

    Rock on! :D

  • @MaximillianZakes and Yes? And Emerson Lake and Palmer? And then a real treat for all you 70s Genesis fans, looking for 'new' Genesis music. Find the bands "The Watch" (especially the album Vacuum; best song = Godess) and Citizen Cain (especially the album "Somewhere But Yesterday") You are in for a treat!

  • It retains the old ending and adds a new one.

  • da pelle d'oca...

  • Just rejoice at the absolute pinnacle of rock music

the world will never see the like again - an incredible triumph of creativity from the boys!

  • drum porn!!!

coolest drum duet in rock history!!

  • All mondays should start with this..... Awesome. EJ

  • COME TAKE A LOOK A TOUR BAND : TYPE OVERHEAD-MUZ ON MYSPACE. THANKS !

  • I love it! I will play my old Lp and heard it again..

  • Wonderful! This is my absolute favourite and one I come back to again and again. Their best piece. The way they re-vitalised it for live performances during the mid/late '70s was just superb.

  • One of the greatest ever pieces of music in 7/8 time... yeah!!

  • Bruford!

  • Agreed,.

The highest point ever in all non-classical music history.

    Unreachable peak.

  • @GiuseppeGazerro: I think at this point, it's just classical music history. "Cinema Show" is almost 40 years old. I believe it qualifies as classical by now.

It definitely will at some point.

Seriously, I don't know how to say this without being explicit: if I were in either Collins' or Bruford's place at that moment, syncing up my drumming to this magnificent composition, I would have spooged my pants on stage right around 3:10.

  • I have been a Genesisis fan since the early 70's I have ALL of thier albums and a lot of the cd's and now a lot of the dvd's. This has to be one of the most entertaining and inspiring videos of the whole lot! Most original and as my love put it THE LONGER MIKES HAIR; the better GENESIS MUSIC!

  • How could you not like this video?

  • If you get the SACD version of Trick of the Tail, it comes with a video of that tour, having 67 songs (2 of them are part 2---this one and Supper's Ready). This comes from that video.

  • A clip which makes you want to go back in a time machine to witness in person. A highly motivated Genesis on camera wishing to dispel all rumors they were finished without Peter. Their pure musical performances peaked during this tour and although more polished with Chester during the next W&W tour they wouldn't recapture the pure energy of this tour. Phil and Mike look like they were literally playing for their musical lives. Supper's Ready and Los Endos are equally breathtaking from this tour.

  • the three masters collins banks and brurord and rutheford and hackett!

  • I guess the only thing disappointments me about this footage is that there are not more close-ups of Bill Bruford's technique. This would have been a great chance to see one of the best prog-rock drummers in action.

  • It's just so sad they hardly ever play the 'Aisle Of Plenty' as part of this! I've listened to 'Selling' at least ten thousand times, and that song still gives me goosebumps. Just a wonderful piece of music; Banks' 8 Voice Choir, Collins' subtle drumming, Hackett's understated guitar and Gabriel's soulfull, dramatic voice... Just a great song, and perhaps the best album-bookend ever!

  • @Proglove85 I always thought the same thing... it's one of their most beautiful moments when it fades into 'Aisle of Plenty'. That choir effect from Banks was always devastating -- "Silent Sorrows", "Entangled"

  • when they were good they were awesome but then they were musicians

  • sounds spot on only complant is video is out of sync with the audio but this happens on a lot of youtube videos congrats to the musicians wowwwwwwwwwwww

  • Genesis in their finest hours.

  • "Don't you know that Phil fired BB because of no being good enough ?"

I don't know where you got that idea, but Bruford himself says he only asked to fill in with Genesis until they found someone permanent.

  • @mfnickster As someone who was fortunate to see both Collins and Bruford perform this several times, I wouldn't want to choose really. BB was, however, just about the best all rounder it was ever my pleasure to watch. I don't believe for a minute that Collins fired him, given the extent to which he generally sings his praises.

  • @mfnickster bill bruford did not ask to fill in, genesis asked him to play, they were affraid of the reaction from the loss of peter, and said at least we have bill bruford, there are interviews on youtube with tony banks about the whole subject, anyway glad you like this awesome music.

  • @caridadroberto Well, you can take it up with Bruford then, because these are his own words from a World of Genesis interview:

"[Phil] had auditioned tons of singers, and I remember him saying that he was better than any of the people he was auditioning. I think I vaguely remember saying, “Why do you stand up front and sing, and I’ll cover for you on the drums? ...He seemed to think that was ok. I said, 'I’ll do it for a bit until you get comfort able and then you can get someone else.'”

  • Genesis are GODS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @zchouinc i guess you're right. Although i like BB better as a drummer, maybe chester suits the Genesis sound ,(at least as it would become) a little better than the more freestyle jazzing of Bruford

  • Tony is the God

  • banks, keith emerson, the two best ever, banks >>>>>>> bethoven

  • I saw this tour...I'm sad, now we have corporate music, Britany Spears, Madonna, and Rap.

  • Ah, the days when Michael Rutherford looked quite energetic...

  • Indeed, they never seemed to enjoy playing their music so much in later years...

  • Bruford and Collins together on the skins - rhythm doesn't get any better than that.

  • This is where Phil Collins earn his right to play alongside Bill Bruford! Some of the greatest drumming i have ever seen.

And, IMHO, Tony Banks beats both Emerson and Wakeman any day

  • The best of the best!!!, GENIAL!!!!!!

  • This truly an end of an era,

  • Tony Banks is a god.this is unbelievable.

one of my favorite pieces ever

  • @08ori thanx

  • Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fuoriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • Take a good notice of the " DRUM Duet " It' tight full of passion driven and necessary! Not like the cutesy soft drum "duets of collins and Thompson". And I forgot to mention Rutherford jumps right in the middle of the feveruos ruckus to and the most intense passion.

  • This is the greatest Genesis vid behind fly/ crawlers. Whis we could buy this whole concert video.

  • Bruford added something so invigorating its a shame they didnt keep him on. you can tell all of the original members are much better and the end result i love!

  • Topographer, thanks for mentioning Andrew McCulloch; he also plays on the 'Scottish Suite' on Anthony Phillips's 'Private Parts & Pieces 2 - Back To The Pavilion'.

  • 1:32 - perhaps the most triumphant moment in all of rock music. From the massive Taurus bass note underpinning it all, up through the celestial Mellotron choir, to the soaring synth lead over the top. This is masterful music. Then Tony Banks puts the exclamation point on it at 2:09 with that razor-sharp squarewave descending blues lick. One of Banks' finest moments - one among many.

  • @jode72 I so whole heartedly agree with you. 1:32 being the most triumphant moment in all of rock. The best there is, The Best there was and the best there ever will be, There are only so many notes one can possibly play, so many combinations. This is the greatest combinations of notes, chords etc etc in ALL music.

  • @jode72 Very right but for me the maximum interpretation is on seconds out. At 7:15 Bill began to activate with his unbelievebal offbeats and sophisticatet rythm the band to an high end effort. Unluckyly Peter didn´t sung !

  • @jode72 Ok, smartass, that's enough.

  • @jode72 I might have been able to let the "most triumphant moment in all of rock music" claim slide were it not for the 63 glory seekers who agreed. Certainly energetic and shows their skill, but most triumphant? Naa - not even close.

  • @jode72 It's freakin' epic! I think it's not just a great moment of rock, but of all sorts of music! The Cinema Show, along with Firth of the Fifth, have the best keyboard parts of all time! Amazing!

  • ABSOLUTLY BRUTAL!!!!

  • This is my absolute favourite Genesis track: the version they played live after Phil took over the vocals. Wonderful stuff and my Seconds Out cd set is permanently in the car so I can listen to it OFTEN.

    Damn, they were good!

  • Yes Neil Peart, yes Carl Palmer, but let us not forget Ginger Baker--THE most underrated drummer of all time. Watch the video documentary of Cream's farewell show at Royal Albert Hall, and you'll know (it's on NetFlix)...and yes, Phil is one of the best, in the top 10 best ever imo.

  • I just love this song, but for me they screwed it up here. The end instrumental part is just too too fast and misses the soul of the piece, misses all the nuances for the sake of how fast they can all play together.

  • This music is England.

  • This is MAGC at human hands... the real spirit of the ART of MUSC

  • I love this version. Bruford does spark it up a bit, but I saw them do this live with Collins only and it was terrific--no flies on Phil--he was one of the best drummers I ever saw live, and I saw a lot of fantastic drummers--Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Ginger Baker.

  • everyone is just ripping it up in this song! - everyone!! - I like the old video just as much as the live footage!!!

  • for me Bruford and Collins are my favorite. Bruford has unmatched originality but I love Genesis so much and I feel that Phil Collins' drumming contributes a lot to its greatness, plus he's the fastest with a one foot bass drum pedal. Carl Palmer is sickly fast but that only takes you so far; his drumming for me doesn't break the creative boundaries that were broken by Bruford and Collins.

  • Banks' board work on this piece is from another world...ahead of it's time really.

  • @Bearses Although I can't help but think that Tony was distracted by the camera, as he made several mistakes on this version

  • This video...seems to be a "Wellment Fuck You " to all who want to put The Globe on the roof of their own house!

    Well-fucked up by themselves !

Even REAL KINGS never wear their crown.

Only for official stuff they , can't but...

    Bernard

  • Gotta admit, Palmer, Bruford and Collins have influenced me in my drumming odessey, as well as Peart. All of them creative, original drummers in odd time and syncopation. Absolutely geniuos!!

  • @weeniedogfan

We must not forget John Weathers. Another master. The most 'funky' of them.

  • What's the name of the film being played/intercut along with the live performance of the song? I'm curious :)

  • @SPeacock The film accompanying the performance is an Italian silent movie released in 1910 called "La nuova insegna dell'albergo del Globo" or "The New Sign of the Globe Hotel".

  • @SPeacock La nuova insegna dell'albergo del Globo, it was played when the seconds out film was released in cinemas.

  • @FarCryification Let me guess: It's now hard to find ("La nuova insegna dell'albergo del Globo)?

  • @SPeacock Erm I just told you what it was, I see someone else had already given the info, so by your assumption only one person in the world knew what it was?

Ignoring that it was Released in the US as a split reel along with the comedy Foolshead Absent-Minded (1910).

Thanks for taking time to be so patronising.

  • @FarCryification I'm sorry, I didn't know. I didn't mean to offend you.

  • @SPeacock No problem :O))

  • 3:10 -> Mike Rutherford! <3

  • Oh well, missing Pete and nothing against Drum Master Phil. What a "sad " show inn Paris yet the best Genesis did under Phil....

  • Amazing music! Hilarious film!

  • Never seen Rutherford move so much...!

  • I love the way you get to see Banks work his magic, because it lets you actually see how he does it. I also like how 2:28 onwards has a good complex, video game feel to it, sort of like the music from Pokemon Battle Revolution from 2007. Love this band to bits... and yes, as you may have gathered I'm a kid, not a grown man who was alive when they were. Wish I was though. I hate music nowadays, except for Newton Faulkner.

  • @ToxicTurquoise454 I think the music in video games (especially Nintendo/Sega golden-age console ones) was influenced by some of the music by Genesis. :)

  • @ToxicTurquoise454 psst....they're still alive and playing. You're good. ;)

  • @kamwrites Uhm, yes I know that... I went to the a 2007 concert in the Turn it on Again tour with parents and brother. There were actually several children there too, so I wasn't the only one.

  • @ToxicTurquoise454 Cool. It was the "not a grown man who was alive when they were" comment that threw me.

  • Before there was Chester and Phil. There was Bill & Phil. If only for a short time.

    Very nice.

  • @spergs As good as chester is, he never gets out from under phil's shadow. Bill did and that's probably why he only did the Trick tour. Priceless! Wish they would play together again.

  • @HereComesTheGuide, Bruford also pounded for Yes, King Crimson, UK and Collins said In Quebec city where I seen this concert in 76 that Bruford was too expensive. Collins was trying to be funny.

  • 2:37.... :)

  • Delbert where did you go, your ever loving Cluadette aka Kayliegh

  • Fantastic quality of recording and music!! Thank you! Phil Phil is certainly there with, Colaiuta, Bozzio, and Thompson.

  • @Chub4ChubsRule thanks!!!

  • a nickle to anyone who can name the other drummer?

  • @troy1415 Why it's my man Bruford, of course. Seeing him with the band must have been a unique experience.

  • @duckfist I did!!

  • @troy1415 bill bruford, man!!!

  • one word, Amazing!!!! 34 years I've been a fan and I never get tired of listening to there music,

  • @tresspass33: 34 years ago, I bought the Lamb at the age of 10 (my first album). Watching this tonight, I still got the same tingles going up my spine. Amazing!!!

  • 1:08 al 2:00 !!

  • @redace01 You can see Mike jumping while playing guitar, so he cannot be playing bass pedals! who's playing bass during that bit?

  • @redace01 I know Mike used to play guitar and Taurus, but here you can see him jumping while playing guitar, so he can't be playing bass pedal ! who's playing bass here? nobody?

  • Phil is the best drummer in MY OPINION. Some may agree, and some may disagree, just listen to what pleases you and enjoy!!

  • Tony Bank's right hand on the Arp Pro Soloist and his left hand on the Mellotron in this song rates up there with Einstein's theories of science or Van Goes paintings. This masterpiece is a piece of art!

  • What is up with the animation at the beginning???

  • Listen to these drums: Rush - ByTor/In The End/In The Mood/2112 ( Exit Stage Left )

  • Great Job To Them , Rock and Roll , 2010

    From Me In CANADA

Peace and Love , Peace and Love

  • For those who like Phil's drumming, I would like to recommend "Brand X"....

  • Damn, is this show available on DVD? Wow.

  • @therealchestymclobes Get the "A Trick of the Tail" remastered cd. It comes with a dvd on this show and it is truly amazing.

  • Best ever band...hands down

  • A joy to watch and hear

  • The drumming might be clever but it sounds like they knocking the living daylights out of old metal dustbins!

  • Strange, I love these drum sounds way more than any drums you hear on the radio these days.

  • take the brilliant little ARP pro Soloist synthesizer, put it in the hands of a genius and Voila ! - this what you get - an incredible musical masterpiece - Luv it !!

  • It's also called the Runaway Globe. You can see it on the British Pathe website.

  • definately in my top 3 keyboard solo"s-- tony"s star moment from the 1976 tour.

  • Anthony Banks, ladies and gentlemen

  • This is the stuff of dreams!! They had to try even harder after Gabriel left them - and it shows. Listen to Tony giving it everything and those drums!! - clattering away like there lives depended on it - BRIILIANT !!!!

  • Fuck!!!!!!is beautiful.......

  • el señor Banks haciendo gala de su virtuosismo

  • still the greatest drummer i have ever heard

  • collins or bruford?

  • The answer to that question in this context is....yes.

  • Both.

  • Foxtrot and Selling England by the pound are my all time Genesis favourites folowed by Trick of the tail, I could go on seconds out, the lamb lies down, wind and wuthering, tresspass. What the hell they are all brilliant.

  • Palmer is the fastest, bruford the most creative, collins the most dynamic

  • GOOD DEFINITION...!

  • @EyMeng what about bonham? the heaviest?

  • @EyMeng And Neil Peart (Rush) the best!. Out side of the list of course, but as progessive rocks' drummers, he is the best in my opinion.
