pretty much all warlords; Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, Liu Bei, Liu Shan, Sun Quan, Sun Ce, Sun Jian, Dong Zhuo, Lü Bu, Gongsun Zan, Meng Huo, Zhang Jiao, Liu Zhang, etc, etc
hint : theres a back door to cheng du...use your officers from other cities and make them draw the enemy out of cheng du...then..use somone with S weaponry tactic and a body guard unit and go around, you might lose a few troops because of steep cliffs but the enemy will stay concentrated on your main force..allowing you to destroy that DAMN CITY >:D
at that time cao cao had just struck out on his own and the yuan family was kinda like royalty/cao cao knew that the other warlords would not have a problem following shao/even though cao knew he was a better choice
Yuan Shao was the best choice at that time. I don't know what the hell happened to him later on, but as a general he knew what he was doing. Cao Cao even disobeyed Yuan Shao's orders to stay put when D.Z was retreating from Luo Yang, struck out after Dong Zhuo's army on his own, and got badly defeated.
Just look at Guan Du and Hu Lao Gate. Look at the similarities. Yuan Shao's stategies were completely different though. At Hu Lao, he was cautious, advancing slowly, and leaning on Dong Zhuo with his superior numbers. Guan Du? Well, you know what happened there, though he'd probably have won if Xun Yu/you, I forget which, hadn't defected. And it was his bad practices which caused that defection. I wonder if illness could have affected him, since he died 2 years later of it.
Yuan family is the most famous and powerful family back then. Yuan Shao has the fame, and Yuan Shu has the money and power. Back then one must take the family reputation into consideration. Cao Cao who has a relatively weak background and power, is not a choice of leader of alliance. Actually, the situation after Doug Zhuo is more like a comflict between two groups: Yuan Shao vs. Yuan Shu. The game has one scenario very similar to the above more realistic setting.
Cao Cao was an lower alliance of Yuan Shao all the way until he successfully seized the emperor and defeated Yuan Shu. You can view Cao Cao as a strong sidekick o Yuan Shao. The alliance broke up after both of them become fairly strong.

Why was Yuan Shao leading the alliance, if you ask me, Cao Cao would have done a better job.
Nonetheless, thnaks for posting this, its really moving.

Y'know, you've made me think of something. In DW3 Xtreme, when Cao Cao disobeys Yuan Shao, and his unit gets wiped out, that's why.
