Time to graduate to "Limb By Limb". I've yet to hear anyone come ANYWHERE close to the way Fishman plays that song. It's so hard. Please attempt. I'd love to see.
I dig the Phish drum covers, by the way. There's not too many, because they're not easy to do.
Nice playing man, very nice! As a guitarist I'm always amazed how you drummers manage to work individually with your limbs... I have hard time even to talk when i'm playing guitar and i've been playing something like 15 yeras anyway. Great song by the way ;)
I have to say, dig this... that's the beauty of Lawn Boy!
It captures in studio, the exact parts of the songs where the rhythm gets out of control, and should be as simple as it was during the last refrain, yet its totally left up to you to determine! ...and sometimes while you're playing, you're just like wtf? Only Fishman, the real maniac genius can compose such a thing and keep a lid on it...!
i love it. not exact but sounds right on. I live in Mass my band and I are trying to cover it, and I didnt know the jam part was that easy. thanks man
Man, that is GREAT for a 1st take! I'd never heard the song before and tried to jam to it w/ some guys at an open mic. Needless to say, it didn't go so well for me! Any chance you could re-post now that you know the song better? Even your 1st take at playing the tune has helped me see what Fishman's drum parts are and I'd love to see how you interpret the part now that you've (presumably) had a chance to work on it a bit. Thanks!
That hi-hat/bass combo in this tune was one of the hardest for me to get. Simple... unti you sit down and try to do it. Just like the middle hi-hat groove in Tool's Eulogy. Nice job.
Thanks for doing that bro! That will def help me learn this groove more easily. I specifically came onto youtube to try and see if i could catch a glimpse of Fishman playing that syncopated middle part and you nailed it for me. Word, peace & drums.
NICU, huh??? I saw them play that one in Las Vegas on 10/30/98...shouldn't be too tough. I'll be posting more vids soon, so subscribe and keep watching. Thanks for the compliment.
Thanks man! It was one of those parts that just clicked when I heard. Sometimes the simple ones are really tough and the hard ones just fall into your lap. This one came easily for some dumb reason. Thanks for the kind words...
great job man.....i've played around with Stash as a drummer myself and have always had problems breaking it down to how each limbs' parts work. You got it nailed and even though you had some minor flubs here and there you did a great job for the first time out. I'm impressed especially the middle section. Now can you demo how to do Taste and It's Ice? he he
I actually practice to Limb by Limb sometimes. I don't know if I do it exact but the basic verse drum part is actually fairly simple. You should nail that one quick.
This is like sitting in front of or behind Fishman. I remember being transfixed at 12-15-95 and behind the boys in Lake Placid 3 days later. Thanks for the look at the man behind "The Curtain."
Thanks a lot! I used to live out in Flagstaff from 1998-1999 and I was in a band then, but all things must end. Now I live in Indiana and I have 2 kids and a wife. I play here in the house (as you can see), but you never know...hard to see, the future.
So am I, but a diet will take care of that. This song though is pretty weird with that triplet beat on the hi-hat and the straight 4/4 beats on most everything else. The hardest part is the middle part (right after the "whooooaa whooooaaa" part)where he goes from the ride to the snare and the hi-hat with the bass drum filling in the holes...killer beat! FISHMAN RULES!

I think we sometimes forget how good Phish really is, and this drumbeat is proof of that. Great playing!

NICU is harder to play than LimbxLimb IMO.

Do "Limb By Limb" if you haven't already. Its nice and hard to get just perfect and I have seen VERY few drummers who can actually, almost nail it.
It would be a good exercise if you don't already play it. Just a tip from a fellow drummer and Phish fan.

Very good. Now if you could learn NICU the way Fishman played it in the late 90's that would be awesome
