I too have Blackfoot lineage, but what is the benefit of being identified as a member of a people who don't want you? If it is money and benefits you can get that on your own merits! My lineage consist of African, Native American, and Irish. And in My 53 years on the face of this planet not one full blooded representation of any of those people have went out of their way to claim me as their own.

Well Cherokee Nation, it's time for you and the other nations to kick out so called white Cherokee people as well. The White Cherokee's should go as well; if the Nation wants to get back to just native roots or closer to its native roots the whites must go as well. To tell the truth about it whites have done far more damage than blacks have ever done. I've ran into whites in every state I've been in state they are Cherokee, or part Cherokee, look just as white as can be.

What all of this boils down to is the policy of "divide and conquer". African and Native people were both enslaved by the Europeans and worked on the same plantations since the 1500s. As William Katz in "Black Indians" explains: "These two people came together in love producing a new race of people called Black Indians much to the chagrin of the invader".  Thus the need to instigate division.

@sundayweiss oops, I meant to type wedlock is the last form of legalized slavery in the United States, maybe europen spouses felt they owned ther native spouses rights and responsibilities to a sovereign Native American Nation as well as their spouse and children. It would be interesting to find out how legal ownership of a spouse and children or their ancestoral citizenship in a sovereign nation is.

It's still wrong that indians owned slaves as much as it was wrong for the white people to own slaves. People need to move beyond hate and start to unite.

I always thought it strange that slaves could not legally marry, and enjoyed the idea of jumping the broom into a spiritual union, I am excited for civil unions as the next civil right for Americans who are descriminated against. My grandmothers father was half white and half black, and her mother was full blood dawes enrolled chickasaw. I think freedmen should be enrolled in the tribes they were freed from without being refered to as wannab's I enjoy all of my ancestory and history.

@sundayweiss The strange thing is, how white men, could "marry" Native American women, and, like magic, be a member/citizen or such, in the tribe. Infiltration I tell you. I don't know all the history, but I do know, marriage between indians and slaves was prohibited. Children of those unions, were not carrying their tribal blood, according to the white man. These unions, did exist. Between indians and slaves, or indians, and Freedmen, for that matter.

All nations engage in slavery but the Choctaw Nation adopted their slaves.

Thats more than can be said for the Chickasaw and Cherokee.

ok well yes the "civilized" tribes were pushed into farming and adopted some of the white mans ways in order to try and keep their lands (which didnt happen)and were told of slavery and how it helped white land owners. u wanna get technical, freed slaves helped the us calvary take up arms against the northern plains tribes. thus the word "buffalo soldier" (because of the dark skin and black beard which resembled a buffalo) that was termed from the tribes, not no damn jamaican words.
