The history or a Skean Dhu was an act of courtesy. It used to be common manners when entering a home to reveal any weaponry you may be carrying. The Skean Dhu was originally an under-arm knife, kept in the armpit. However, people would commonly stick them in their sock before entering someone's home as a way of extending proper manners and disclosing that they were carrying. It became such a common image that it stuck that way. "Black" was also a euphemism for concealed...thus the name.
i have this, i took it on an airplane hahahahahaahah just to see if it worked, u gotta take the metal ring that comes on it OFF or it will set of alarms
bad review. you just talked about another review on the knife you got, and started to praise cold steel and the knife store you got it from. didnt really about the knife itself
As already said this knife is derived from the Scottish "Black Knife" which is pronounced Skee(an)Doo and Spelled - SGIAN DUBH(google it if you dont believe me) which is part of tradition scottish KILT attire for formal occassions and yes it is worn in the sock or "Hose"
Skean dhu and Skene dhu are alternative English spelling
The blade is made of grivory, the handle is made of kraton. some ppl have that ass backwords. Its 2010 and they still make them, but maybe thats why they come with a metal key ring now cause they WILL go threw a metal detecter.
hahaha I tested it with this exact version of the knife, no problems with metal detectors at all. I told one of the security people beforehand and he laughed and gave me the ok because the knives are such crap that they really aren't that dangerous
it's pronounced "skeen doo" which means "black knife" in Gaelic. Sorry if I'm being a bit of a smart arse. Looks like a very nice knife, I've been thinking about buying one as a boot knife.
Hey, nice review! I just bought one today. And I really like Atlanta Cutlery. Good stuff, especially the sgian dubh blades. And it's bronounced skeen doo, spelt sgian dubh, sgian dub, sgian duh, skian dubh, and other spellings.
It's not uncommon for these Nightshades to have a weak tip. I've got the fgx push-blade 2 that I drove into a water bottle, which didn't pierce, but instead sent the bottle across the room and bent the tip slightly. I wound up sharpening the tip with a sharpening stone. (I'll send you a picture if you want to see it.) I'm sure that it'll easily go through flesh, but it was disappointing to say the least.
its skin-do i know how its spelt but thats how u say it. it a scotish "sock knife" ment for serimonial use usaly worn with dirk ( long dagger pippers were)
I don't have any hard fact on this...it's just what I heard from a vendor...but supposedly, one could walk through a metal detector with a nightshade knife taped to one's leg and not set any alarms off...so, hypothetically, one could take a nightshade knife to the airport and get on a plane with it, and after that...use your imagination...seems to me like reason enough for them to be banned....I've checked cold steel's site and they don't say anything about a ban.......so I'm just speculating...
@chrispy990 the new screeners they use at airports now aren't just metal detectors, they put out an imprint of your body and can see pretty much anything you're wearing
@pillemannen they're aren't banned. i just recently got into cold steel products, mostly because i'm a fan of ka-bar, and i received a magazine in the mail for fall 2010; all of the night shade series knives are in it.
I've passed through a high tech metal detector with a fgx push blade, so yeah it's safe.

Not Scottish, or Scots, (whatever Kyle...), I'm the hated the Sassenacht! (Gaelic word, for Saxon).
You say it as, phonetically, skay an doo.
Sgean dhu, is the same thing
Invented, before the fork, this little knife, was the carried, in the sock, by every Highlander, since year dot. (It's older than some hills!)
The best sock knife ever, according to legend, has been forged in iron, heated to cherry red, then pushed into an Englishmans neck, to temper it.
Ceramic, is nice but I'm biased.

thanks man...I thought it would be an oriental word...I never put it together that it could be scottish...thanks for the clarification

I'd really like to pick a couple up just in case they go out of production. From Cold Steel's website...
"It was called the Skean Dhu (which means "Black Knife" in Gaelic, the ancient language of the British Isles)."
I had no idea it was Scottish, I thought it would be Asian. Nice informative review, keep it up.
