This car was never the fastest saloon car in the world.
It is true, that the M5 (Type e30) set the speed record as fastest saloon car from 1989 up to 1996. But as you see in this ad, it's the M5 - Type e39. This car came out 1998.
So - when this commercial was made, the M5 was already beaten by the Brabus E V12, who broke the speedrecord for saloon cars in September 1996 with 330,4 km/h.
I wonder how the agency told that their customer BMW. After shooting this ad...
Brabus is not a Saloon. It is a conversion. Did the standard Merc beat the record?
This advert was done in South Africa by TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris and won an advertising award. The car and the driver where sent from Germany as it was not on sale by the time the ad was made. BMW would not have placed incorrect facts on the advert as it is not allowed by the advertsising association :)
