All the crosses in stalingrad were to keep your borders, our crosses in normandy were us dieing on ally shores to help you keep your way of life not ours. We are loyal to our allies. I know there are sad americans but the most of us are thinking globally
I am american and I donate a ton. People outside the usa love to think we are arogant and selfish. Look at what we donate it almost matches the entire rest of the world combined. Look at human rights orgs. We make up 90%. we are trying to help we truly are. This guy says to look at stalingrad. About how many died. Of course the russians pass us in deaths. However the differerance between us and the rest of the worlds deaths.

Millions of men and women have died for the freedom of The United States, while the people of the Soviet Union are too afraid to fight for whats right.
Your ignorance is truly saddening, I pity you. I can guarantee that more Russians died in the defeat of nazi germany than americans have died in ww2, plus all of their later military adventures put together. It's sad that people can grow up so ignorant of real history. If you don't know the past you are condemned to waste your life repeating the mistakes of earlier generations. Google "battle of stalingrad" and 'fall of berlin 1945' & read before you reply.

Dear my IanKemp1969,
I see its truly easy for you to win an internet battle,
Searching your information before posting your comment, throw in some long words that make you sound witty, and there you have it, a pretty good argument which is favored on your side. If the United States hadn't entered world war II, I doubt you'd be alive to type these very dearest comments towards myself. Now ask yourself with ease, why do you continue to try and win the argument over such an irrelevant topic?
Good points but a pity that every Billy Bragg song sounds exactly the same. And as for his line about "Cheap American guitars" - he's playing a Burns Steer, made in England. This kind of knee-jerk let's-slag-off-America nonsense misses the mark. There is plenty to criticise. Why say things that aren't even true?
All billy bragg songs sound similar because he plays a certain style. It's like saying all Woody Guthrie songs sound exactly the same. So he made a joke about the guitar being american when it's actually british. Big deal, get over it.
"every Billy Bragg song sounds exactly the same" ONLY TO DEAF EARS. Why would anybody want to slag off America? Slagging off the smaller part of the northern bit is fair game but America is a massive continent with lots of countries in it. In other words can we stop labelling the USA as "America". It's a bit like France demanding that we call it Europe fro now on.
Dresdens right, and tsunokami, your just backing up what this songs about, youth who are too busy not caring or pointing the finger in the other direction instead of questioning yourself(selves) for once. And hes definatley not blaming the youth of america for nazis or other communist governments

so its the young people of america's fault that people in other countires are sleeping in the streets? mhmmm thats what i heard... how about instead of blaming young people .. we blame the people who really did fuck up the world? like the soviet leaders who starved ukraine, or the nazis who killed the jews, or the warlords in africa, or the petty nationalistic states in europe, or the greedy wallstreet traders. Not america's damn fault, especially not american's youth's fault.
No, he's commenting on the fact that the youth of any nation (America doubly so) are so bloody self-absorbed and that they could care less about being like that...because after all (as I have been told so many times) "This is America" ^Gags on spoon^
Don't know how old you are, but this was written in the 1980's, when the USA was involved in Central America "They're already shipping those body bags, down below the Rio Grande. You can fight for democracy at home, not in some foreign land."
It wan't about the youth of America, it was about the goventment of America needing to consider that a nuclear war could have broken out over Nicaragua. He mentions "Los Alamos will burn with them." Los Alamos has a large missile base.
@DresdenStarwing Just to be a pedant, it's 'they couldn't care less'. If you say they could care less, it implies they actually care quite a lot, which isn't what you mean, I don't think. Sorry, I just find this frustrating!
Wow- a great posting. Have travelled in that part of the world recently and it is amazing how much it has changed. Would be fascinated to see the whole documentary.
I want to give this six stars (or more) but youtube won't let me. Instead you can have my babies. Send me your address and they'll be in the post tomorrow.
Please, please do. I'd love to see the complete footage! I'll send you a friend request in a moment so I can keep in contact; if you do upload it would you please let me know when it's up?
Please post the whole video of billys 1987 tour

I believe the man on Billy's tee-shirt might well have described him as "полезный идиот", back in the day... It's a great tune though!

this song is still true today - apart from the fact that you can put any other countries name instead of america in as well.
listen to the lyrics and you might understand what he is on about..... :)
