I was "hypnotized" once in a school event. Some finnish NLP guy just made me believe my arms were lined with steel rods and then asked some volunteers from the crowd to come and try bend my arms using as much force as they can. Even though I'm not that buff no one could do it until the guy told me to awaken myself from this state.
Yes, it works. And I have no idea what the guy did.

Derren himself admits that its fake, because he isnt using hypnosis as we know it.
he uses stuff like pshycology suggestion and that kind of stuff and it really works to bland out and start daydreaming.

Seeing as half of Derren Brown's job is to educate people on how gullible they are and how easily they can be tricked into believing anything, it wouldn't surprise me if this was fake.
It's just as likely that those were all plants than if he really did "hypnotize" them.
Not knocking him, because I think he's incredibly intelligent, but part of his message is that you have to know when to be skeptical.
