when i lived in England for a few years and was at school there, the new boarding master who was in the coldstream guards did this before he became an officer and retired as a major.

Anyway he showed us the shoes he had to wear and even walking on a normal wooden floor was difficult.

That is why the about turn on the march is in 3 slow deliberate movements, if the turn is done in quick step,ppl will fall.

the shoes have rounded metal studs on the bottom, which is why he/they sound loud when they stomp their feet around.. but it also makes it extremely slippery, it's no uncommon for them to fall over, especially if they're new guys

@ulli0402 i'm not sure exactly, maybe it's a menacing sound? of an entire regiment marching together, i think it also has something to do with keeping everyone marching at the same pace, you stamp your feet in accordance with the music when on parade, if you can hear everyone else marching.. you can adust yourself to make sure that you're marching at the same pace as them.. which is why they're pretty flawless when marching together

Nice recovery by the guard.  His shoes are probably fitted with taps so that his steps are "noisy enough", both in his stride and when he places his feet together. They will reduce the traction that his shoes can get on the walk. Rubber soles would reduce the shock to his feet, but would also reduce the noise.
