@91Holdem You are the reason why Stephen Fry wants "like" speak in room 101. There is also the reason that you cannot spell "library" right! Borrow a book, educate your mind and soul. Library's are the keystone of anybodies education. Learn from people who have mastered what you are learning.

@33six The problem with Microsoft and Windows is it's still largely in the same mind set it has been for the last 20 years. It's a case of "it'll do". WIndows 7 and WIndows Phone 7 are a nice step in the right direction, but on the desktop we're still stuck with a lot of different UI elements and designs dating back over several versions of Windows which have yet to be updated to be consistent with the newer look. Their other software also isn't consistent in UI and so on.

Stephen and his Apple fetish. For someone with such depth, how can he like apple products? They are the hallmark of the shallow and image obsessed, an idol of form over function.

@TheTommiesTheBand Sometimes people like to switch off their brain and enjoy the simple things in life. Why do you think big action films are so popular? There's hardly anything you'd consider intellectual in them, just a bunch of explosions and killing and more often than not some hot blonde or brunette to perv at lol. UGH in america we call this speech habit up-talking. it is just.....repulsive. it sounds so condescending and stupid and. god. i hate it so much. thank you, stephen fry!!
AQI?! I thought I was the only one who noticed this as a fast growing trend.
Irritates the crap out of me. Nowadays it sounds patronising not less assertive. As if they're making sure you're keeping up with them. *5 palm punchs*
I think he appreciates the attention given to its design. You must admit that overall, Macs are prettier than PCs, OS and casing, whether or not you like to use them.
@mogur00 We have an Aussie in our big brother house at the mo and he talks like it constantly. We also get your biggest loser and everybody on there, trainers and host included, speak like it and several are from Sidney. My friends and I laugh our heads of at the contestants because they all speak like it. Maybe you are that used to it you don't even notice it anymore.
i think our libraries would be in room 101 rather than lovely as the majority of the contain half the books they once did to make room for coffee shops and babysitting facilities.
To throw my hat into the ring on the US vs UK TV issue. Why is anyone trying to have an intellectual debate about something that is so subjective as to render a conclusion utterly impossible? It depends ENTIRELY on your tastes. I prefer UK TV, but House, Dexter and Lie To Me are three of my favourite shows. I think the best TV comedy comes from UK, but George Carlin, Richard Prior and Bill Cosby are among my favourite standups. good and bad in both, they're just culturally different.
On the continuing debate about US/UK television, I'd say we are about equal with similar great/good/crap ratios. Just better at different things. The Americans seem to do better drama overall, while we do better news & documentaries.
Comedy is about level, though I'd say us Brits just shade it on the originality factor. Reality shows are also about equal.
Have to admit that I haven't seen much of US children's programming or sport coverage. As for commercials, just fuck off!
come on man what about south park ,flight of the conchords, family guy, the life and times of tim, the american office (possibly better than the original). South Parks the most original thing on TV. i love the Boosh,The office, peepshow, nathan barley, green wing, monkey dust, the inbetweeners,Partridge but now only two of these shows are still running. im english but at the minute american tv is better at almost everything 'cept news (obviously), factual science/wildlife/other.documentarys
No way in hell is the American Office better then the original! Especially with the episodes they've been turning out lately (I do have to say that I still enjoy watching it every week though lolx). But for the most part I agree with you. British television at the moment,is not doing the best...Overall though, It is. If you compared the greatest American shows to the greatest British shows of all time (I'm assuming you're talking about comedy), the British ones would definitely come out on top.
@TheHappydead My comment was meant to be read as 'across the board'. I feel our TV and comedy industries still offer comparatively more freedom for original ideas than they do Stateside.
Your examples of 'originality' include an unfunny attempt at a Simpsons/South Park hybrid and an American version of an existing - not to mention superior - British show.
I'll give you South Park, though it has been around for over a decade now. Chonchords is the brainchild of a New Zealand act.
@TheHappydead Not able to judge Life and Times of Tim as I've never seen it. (From reading the synopsis, it's already reminding me of Stressed Eric, but it could be completely different.)
I still maintain Britain produces proportionately more original humour shows for mainstream TV than America, on the whole.
@kisbie "We do better news." Jesus... that doesn't exactly fill me with patriotism. That's like saying our waste disposal systems are more efficient.
UK = superior comedy
US = superior budgets.
There. And the people who are saying it's all subjective are dull and redundant. Art ISN'T subjective. That's why a painting by Monet is worth millions, whilst the stick man drawing I did of myself in high school with a giant green knob was only worth a bollocking from my chemistry teacher.
@ukulazy You know, for all its faults, our TV news - well the BBC at least - is still the envy of the world. All the best news networks are basically trying to imitate its style. And I'd have thought having decent waste disposals was actually a reason to celebrate. (Whether they are up to scratch is another matter.)
@ukulazy Britain is rarely no. 1 at anything these days, but overall, Auntie is still the world leader in what it does. And mostly for the better. (Oh, and art isn't subjective because everything is art. Beauty is subjective.)
@kisbie True, beauty is subjective. And I'm glad I don't have to S&%T in a bucket. I also agree about the news thing, I just think that it's not something to be proud of really, rather it's something other countries should be ashamed of. Especially America, which broadcasts such tripe as 'Fox News'!
@kisbie American dramas used to be better, but I haven't seen a good drama lately from either. If you know of any, please tell me. As for comedy, I'd be hard pressed to find a good American comedy since Seinfeld. I can think of the odd few, but half of those came from British shows. British news and documentaries are definitely better. I do prefer American sporting events though :)
@Gleebo The British drama Life on Mars is excellent, as are many other series that sadly have to compete with awful reality shows. This means that they rarely get the same screen time or coverage that Simon bloody Cowell (that's his full name by the way!) manages to get. Reality shows take up screen time that could be far better used promoting intelligent and interesting shows, but unfortunately the public seem to prefer tat!
@kisbie Nah. I disagree. The British have comedies nailed. America has a long way to go to catch up with gold like The Thick Of It, Outnumbered, IT Crowd, Black Books, Alan Partridge.... this list could go on and on.
@kisbie US children's programming has become an atrocity since Jim Henson died. Sesame Street is now a joke, and Nickelodeon and Disney are too concerned about pandering to parents to put any substance in their shows. Everything is literally a rehash of the same jokes, situations, and politically correct but educationally moot scripts. That's obviously not literally all of it, but everything mainstream and then some.
@Nerfi Phineas and Ferb is a pretty good show. And Little Einsteins, for the younger crowd. Interesting for the kids, and not so mind numbing as to force parents to leave the room.
@lewisner I'm talking about the current state of TV. If you think My Family is all we have left, then you're wrong. Admittedly, most good comedy on British TV now is in the form of panel shows, chat shows and stand-up - which are so popular now because we live in the age of reality TV, but that's another discussion - so perhaps Americans are currently doing better at sitcoms. But there's still Lead Balloon, Peep Show, Not Going Out, Miranda and more recently Roger & Val and Grandma's House.
@kisbie I don't count chat shows and panel shows as comedy I am thinking of situation comedy. Regarding Lead Balloon Jack Dee is OK as standup but I thought his show sucked.I've got to admit I stay away from BBC comedy it really is so bad.
@lewisner I'm always puzzled by the refusal of some to bracket panel shows (and chat shows hosted by comedians like Graham Norton) as 'comedy shows'. What else are they? Besides 'quiz shows' and 'light entertainment' of course. You can quibble that they're cheap and lazy compared to sitcoms and sketch shows, but that's a generalisation that is largely untrue I think. HIGNFY at its worst is far better than Horne & Corden at its best. (8/10 Cats wouldn't be much without Sean Lock though.)
@kisbie Eggheads is a panel show but it's not hosted by a comedian. I will agree with you that HIGNFY , QI and Mock The Week are very funny.Satire/lampooning/political are things we still do well.
I'll amend my statement to say that our situation comedies aren't funny.
@lewisner Eggheads is hosted by the brother of a comedian (I'd much prefer Tim Vine actually). I think we can agree that panel shows obviously aren't all comedy shows, but the celebrity ones tend to focus on being witty and funny above scoring points and winning the game, though hammed-up 'competitiveness' is a good source of laughs. We'll have to agree to disagree about the current state of sitcoms in Britain. I think we have a few good ones, even if America is out in front at the moment.
@lewisner By the way, you can't use Frasier as an example of contemporary comedy. Granted, it's still fairly recent, but it finished in 2004. The Simpsons is my favourite TV show of all time by the way. But let's not forget all the debates about whether that's been any good since season 10 (my view is still has enough good moments to stave off cancellation, but not as many as at the peak). At least you didn't nominate Family Guy!
@kisbie Our childrens programming is very mixed. On one hand, we have utter shit in which disney stars playing ten year olds with huge boobs and makeup tell non jokes punctuated by laugh tracks, on the other hand we have great educational kids' programs like sesame street and genuinely funny cartoons like ren and stimpy.
@Craxblorg Ren & Stimpy isn't a children's cartoon and they haven't made any new episodes for about 15 years! But at least you still have children's TV in the US. There's barely any in Britain now. Both the BBC and ITV have scaled their output back massively. A couple of good shows survive though.
Ive's a good designer, and more responsible for Apple's success than Jobs was (in my opinion). But without Dieter Rams' designs, Ive would not be close to where he is today.

It's perfectly alright to like Steven Fry but disagree with his opinions, I, for example, hate Macs.

As for commercials, just fuck off!
kisbie 2 years ago 81
come on man what about south park ,flight of the conchords, family guy, the life and times of tim, the american office (possibly better than the original).
TheHappydead 2 years ago
No way in hell is the American Office better then the original! Especially with the episodes they've been turning out lately (I do have to say that I still enjoy watching it every week though lolx). But for the most part I agree with you. British television at the moment,is not doing the best...Overall though, It is. If you compared the greatest American shows to the greatest British shows of all time (I'm assuming you're talking about comedy), the British ones would definitely come out on top.

rdgloveshouse 2 years ago
@TheHappydead My comment was meant to be read as 'across the board'. I feel our TV and comedy industries still offer comparatively more freedom for original ideas than they do Stateside.
Your examples of 'originality' include an unfunny attempt at a Simpsons/South Park hybrid and an American version of an existing - not to mention superior - British show.
I'll give you South Park, though it has been around for over a decade now. Chonchords is the brainchild of a New Zealand act.
kisbie 2 years ago
@TheHappydead Not able to judge Life and Times of Tim as I've never seen it. (From reading the synopsis, it's already reminding me of Stressed Eric, but it could be completely different.)
I still maintain Britain produces proportionately more original humour shows for mainstream TV than America, on the whole.
kisbie 2 years ago
ohhh you need to watch life n times of tim its amazing.
theres a few full eps on youtube.

Doesn't really work if you have to add exceptions involving entire genres.

@kisbie "We do better news." Jesus... that doesn't exactly fill me with patriotism. That's like saying our waste disposal systems are more efficient.
UK = superior comedy
US = superior budgets.
There. And the people who are saying it's all subjective are dull and redundant. Art ISN'T subjective. That's why a painting by Monet is worth millions, whilst the stick man drawing I did of myself in high school with a giant green knob was only worth a bollocking from my chemistry teacher.
ukulazy 1 year ago
@ukulazy You know, for all its faults, our TV news - well the BBC at least - is still the envy of the world. All the best news networks are basically trying to imitate its style. And I'd have thought having decent waste disposals was actually a reason to celebrate. (Whether they are up to scratch is another matter.)
kisbie 1 year ago
@ukulazy Britain is rarely no. 1 at anything these days, but overall, Auntie is still the world leader in what it does. And mostly for the better. (Oh, and art isn't subjective because everything is art. Beauty is subjective.)
kisbie 1 year ago
@kisbie True, beauty is subjective. And I'm glad I don't have to S&%T in a bucket. I also agree about the news thing, I just think that it's not something to be proud of really, rather it's something other countries should be ashamed of. Especially America, which broadcasts such tripe as 'Fox News'!
ukulazy 1 year ago
@ukulazy I was your Chemistry teacher, and I only gave you a bollocking because the stickman was naked.
williamwilson666 1 year ago
@kisbie American dramas used to be better, but I haven't seen a good drama lately from either. If you know of any, please tell me. As for comedy, I'd be hard pressed to find a good American comedy since Seinfeld. I can think of the odd few, but half of those came from British shows. British news and documentaries are definitely better. I do prefer American sporting events though :)
I'm Canadian, by the way.
Gleebo 1 year ago
@Gleebo The British drama Life on Mars is excellent, as are many other series that sadly have to compete with awful reality shows. This means that they rarely get the same screen time or coverage that Simon bloody Cowell (that's his full name by the way!) manages to get. Reality shows take up screen time that could be far better used promoting intelligent and interesting shows, but unfortunately the public seem to prefer tat!
baileysan75 1 year ago
@kisbie Nah. I disagree. The British have comedies nailed. America has a long way to go to catch up with gold like The Thick Of It, Outnumbered, IT Crowd, Black Books, Alan Partridge.... this list could go on and on.
teabagbob 1 year ago 3
@kisbie US children's programming has become an atrocity since Jim Henson died. Sesame Street is now a joke, and Nickelodeon and Disney are too concerned about pandering to parents to put any substance in their shows. Everything is literally a rehash of the same jokes, situations, and politically correct but educationally moot scripts. That's obviously not literally all of it, but everything mainstream and then some.
Nerfi 1 year ago
@Nerfi Phineas and Ferb is a pretty good show. And Little Einsteins, for the younger crowd. Interesting for the kids, and not so mind numbing as to force parents to leave the room.
TacticusPrime 1 year ago
@kisbie British comedy is DIRE. What have we got? Doc Martin or "My Family as opposed The Simpsons, Frasier and Ellen?
lewisner 1 year ago
@lewisner I'm talking about the current state of TV. If you think My Family is all we have left, then you're wrong. Admittedly, most good comedy on British TV now is in the form of panel shows, chat shows and stand-up - which are so popular now because we live in the age of reality TV, but that's another discussion - so perhaps Americans are currently doing better at sitcoms. But there's still Lead Balloon, Peep Show, Not Going Out, Miranda and more recently Roger & Val and Grandma's House.
kisbie 1 year ago
@kisbie I don't count chat shows and panel shows as comedy I am thinking of situation comedy. Regarding Lead Balloon Jack Dee is OK as standup but I thought his show sucked.I've got to admit I stay away from BBC comedy it really is so bad.
lewisner 1 year ago
@lewisner I'm always puzzled by the refusal of some to bracket panel shows (and chat shows hosted by comedians like Graham Norton) as 'comedy shows'. What else are they? Besides 'quiz shows' and 'light entertainment' of course. You can quibble that they're cheap and lazy compared to sitcoms and sketch shows, but that's a generalisation that is largely untrue I think. HIGNFY at its worst is far better than Horne & Corden at its best. (8/10 Cats wouldn't be much without Sean Lock though.)
kisbie 1 year ago
@kisbie Eggheads is a panel show but it's not hosted by a comedian. I will agree with you that HIGNFY , QI and Mock The Week are very funny.Satire/lampooning/political are things we still do well.
I'll amend my statement to say that our situation comedies aren't funny.
lewisner 1 year ago
@lewisner Eggheads is hosted by the brother of a comedian (I'd much prefer Tim Vine actually). I think we can agree that panel shows obviously aren't all comedy shows, but the celebrity ones tend to focus on being witty and funny above scoring points and winning the game, though hammed-up 'competitiveness' is a good source of laughs. We'll have to agree to disagree about the current state of sitcoms in Britain. I think we have a few good ones, even if America is out in front at the moment.
kisbie 1 year ago
@lewisner By the way, you can't use Frasier as an example of contemporary comedy. Granted, it's still fairly recent, but it finished in 2004. The Simpsons is my favourite TV show of all time by the way. But let's not forget all the debates about whether that's been any good since season 10 (my view is still has enough good moments to stave off cancellation, but not as many as at the peak). At least you didn't nominate Family Guy!
kisbie 1 year ago
@kisbie Our childrens programming is very mixed. On one hand, we have utter shit in which disney stars playing ten year olds with huge boobs and makeup tell non jokes punctuated by laugh tracks, on the other hand we have great educational kids' programs like sesame street and genuinely funny cartoons like ren and stimpy.
Craxblorg 1 year ago
@Craxblorg Ren & Stimpy isn't a children's cartoon and they haven't made any new episodes for about 15 years! But at least you still have children's TV in the US. There's barely any in Britain now. Both the BBC and ITV have scaled their output back massively. A couple of good shows survive though.
