I have bad arches by genetics, but I roll them in really bad anyway!! This video taught me how to push down with my big toe to lift my arch. I always tried "pulling up my arches" like at 0:43 but it never worked well. Thank you lisahowell for taking the time to explain things some teachers don't have time to explain in dance class!!
I roll my arches really bad!!! I have a bad arch to begin with and this video taught me how to continually press down with my big toe to get that nice arch shape. Granted my arch isn't as good as other dancer's are, but at least I know I'm using them correctly now, thanks lisahowell!
@lisahowell2 um I don understand this but it's probably because i've never taken a ballet or en pointe class. Ever since I took cheerleading I also wanted to do ballet we just couldn't fnd a good class or something like that. So could u just explain it more thanks. Also I've been strecthing my foot using ur videos and others.
I'm 54 and long past my teenage ballet days. No teachers ever went into detail like this to try and help us strengthen and position our feet, legs and arms correctly. They mostly just shrieked at us and belittled us for doing things wrong, but didn't help us figure out how to do them correctly. As a result, I had crappy turnout, crappy balance, and crappy hip flexiblily resulting in injuries and discouragement. It's good to know that teachers have improved so much!
@moonberrymay I agree wholeheartedly! My dancing days are only 19 years past (I'm 38 now) and this would have helped enormously. Do you, too, have nightmares of shrill teachers with a string of limited adjectives making you cringe in class? These are some of the best things I've seen, and I've tried them! Can't believe my turnout is still comfy for second position.
Im 17 and Im starting on wednesday!!! I dnt have good feet neighter but, if u're not going pro, it doesnt matter, just do ur excersics for the arches and enjoy!!! Maybe u dnt have high arches but they're pretty strng instead, that also works!!!
How can you get the arch when pointing your foot through your toes? I've been trying and all I seem to achieve is the pointing foot of a five year old...
That was very helpful!! But there was one thing that really bothered me, and it's way off subject. But the dancer bends her knees when she goes into her fifth, I though that was really bad for your knees : /.
I meant to get into her fifth she had to bend her kneees then straighten them when she was in her actual fifth at 1:41. I thought that you had to do it with straight legs so it wouldn't hurt your knees.
No dear it is not bad for your knees, its just like plie. It IS bad if you force your turnout from your knees. Some people have to bend their knees slightly (like me) because of hyper extended knees. She wasnt doing anything too technical, so I wouldnt scold her about it, now if she does it in class, everytime to get into 5th, it's a different story. ;)
I already have high arches but this video taught me how to control them so thanks alot

Your pointe actually comes from your ankle.
Try pointing from your ankle, instead of your toes (:

she plied? in that case, all plie's would be bad for your knees.

Well, okay. It just looked like she was straining a little. Thnx for the lesson but for the record I wasn't scolding her.
jewingten 3 years ago
I meant in general deary, not saying you personally were scolding her.
I also left out- some people have to bend their knees slightly (because of hyper extention) to get into fifth from a tendu ect.

Thanks Lisa!! Your videos are always helpful =)
