I visited the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the museum with some Vermeers. There was a little girl watching the famous view on Delft. She asked the guard who stood beside the painting "is there a light behind this picture?"
I feel The Girl in the Red Hat is one of the greatest paintings ever made. I was quite surprized to learn that it's only about 10 inches high. I feel it's far superior to anything Rembrandt ever painted-AM I CRAZY??? I think the glowing flesh tones in shadow, the delicate glint of moisture in and around the mouth and the stark light on the face and white collar are all at a skill level unseen till Vermeer.
It is certainly a gift of nature for one to take what is on their mind and put it to canvas - a great recording of history by a great master never to be forgotten - Great Post Thanks.
how can one really have a favorite vermeer when they all resonate with his immortal soul as it awakens ours in the viewing of it. and you know that this is happening to you when you feel your soul flow through your body like a sparkling breeze--in the same way it does when a person opens up to you. and the amazing thing is-is that it always feels the same.anyone who 'knows' will tell you that.
well the reason why vermeer could convey all that he does is that by being utterly in love with what he is doing he passes from one paradigm to another where he becomes other than he is(loses self) and takes on the creative genius of the universe--in the same way that anyone who can become of the space of what it is he does or creates know--in another realm just ask phil jackson and michael jordan. it is really not such a mystery.
