Its how you look at them.. they are cheap and light compared to electrical or combustion engines, thus imagnie an application like a bike.. or small aircraft. but the thought I would like you to consider is a solar and wind powered compressed air system that you can fill your air car and do all of your daily running about? you can't see that?
But the conversion rate into battery storage is better than into compressed air. If you can build one such solar or wind powered device to compress air for one car, you should be able to use the same to charge the batteries of 5 or more cars.
Is that a back of a cigerette packet calculation?, and does it take into account the extraordinary costs of batteries, which some only last 1000 charge cycles, top end ithium ion maybe longer but then you are looking at more than a cost of a car for those alone.
@DjViViDuk Yes, batteries can be expensive, no it doesn't make the TCO of the vehicle more expensive than that of a fossil-fueler. TCO including depreciation is still about half that of a similarly priced dino burner.
Amazing engineering project, compressed air engines are the way forward and we realy should see some heavy investment from our governments now!.. they find billions for all the wrong reasons.
I guess i just don't get compressed air motors. It's all energy-in-energy-out at the end of the day and you have to compress the air to feed the motor, so what's the point? It's certainly NOT the way forward because of that.
@marcuskeeler That's right, except that it is a way of storing energy, not getting it out of something that already has it stored. Batteries and hydrogen (for fuel cells) also need energy put into them in the form of electricity, the electricity comes from solar panels which get their energy from the sun (or wind power which also comes from the sun) and the sun gets its energy from it's self in the form of the hydrogen being used for fusion. Even gasoline/oil is just a way of storing energy.

The advantage of a compressed air car is it would take a lot less time to fill up than it takes a electric vehicle to recharge and a electric vehicle probably isn't too much more efficient. Otherwise, you right, for almost all applications the compressed air engine is not the way forward, too inefficient.
The painted spinner gives it a dangerous "Luftwaffe" feel to it. Like look out, here come the germans! Nicely done.
