The purpose of government is to protect its citizens. That means SWAT teams beating down people when necessary, prisons where ugly things are done to extract intel from our enemies, and killing people overseas. You may disagree on how & when that stuff is appropriate, or on whether the people being killed are innocent. That's a legitimate debate. But the fact remains, the purpose of government is to do those things.

What you say makes sense, it is a rough world so rough actions have to be taken I understand that yet the fact remains that the government is not a separate entity that is formed to protect the people but a representation of the people.
