It not about horsepower but rather about traction. Those horse were slipping at first but it was pure luck those little hooves got enough traction to pull that jacknifed semi forward.
@SPS148669 not entirely pure luck, they are often shod with a cleat in the front of the horseshoe which provides them extra traction as well as the fact that those horses probably weigh 1900 or so pounds and horses carry most of their weight in their front, but yeah i noticed them slipping too.
@nuclearthreat545 Oh yeah, they can drive on hilly, crooked roads at 10MPH in their black buggies in the dark and cause major accidents but that is OK I guess. No, they won't sue if they get hurt or killed but how does that set with your conscience when you are the driver of the vehicle that hit them?
What kind of horses are these? Well no matter, I find it funny that 400 horses couldn't get the truck unstuck but 4 did. Just goes to show that more horse power isn't always better.
Four Horsepower my ass. This must be like at least 16 Horsepower. Those are some Huge Draft Horses. Not to mention this Amish Farmer doing his good deed for the Week I'd say. But then they used Horses back in the day for everything they did. Twenty Mule Teams pulling the Borax Wagons across the salt flats. It is funny that those Horses were almost spooked by a mouse. But hey that's what eats You while You sleep. Mice & Clowns will eat You if You're not careful!
@sstoval3 ok thanks, I thought maybe there was a difference between "Amish horses" and "Baptist horses" or Methodist horses" or even "Muslim horses" ;)
Great video, thanks for sharing. I love the way the horses dutifully pull that big, scarey truck out of the snow, then they get startled by the little mouse that runs across the road in front of them! Too cute!
The irony here is awe-inspiring. For years, horses delivered the milk. They were replaced by milk trucks in the 1920's. Now... 80 years later the horses are showing they have no hard feelings by helping a milk truck in need. lol
Amazing display of the strength of a team of horses! I would not have believed that only 4 of them could have pulled that heavy truck out of there! Great video!
@kmg501 - You are probably right, but even if the tank was empty, you still have what 8000-10,000 pounds of cab/motor and container they pulled out of the drift. Still amazing to me...
Empty that truck/trailer combination will weigh about 36k pounds (a tractor alone weighs about 17k). Loaded it could be a legal max of 80k pounds. He was probably empty causing a loss of rolling friction.
With the horse team and low gear power to both driver axles (one dual wheel side each) it was probably just enough to break the static hold and right angle resistance that the truck/trailer combination was in.
The horse on the far left is evidently the supervisor - he barely moves, much less pulls! LOL!
Seriously, it's he's like the anchor in a turn in a parade - the person at the far edge has to take much larger steps to cover the turn while the anchor marches in place.
Just goes to show that we can still rely on horses in many ways.
In an Amish team of work horses, there's usually only one horse who knows what they're doing, and the others just know to pull as hard as they can when told.
A couple of days ago in Kentucky an Amish family with seven kids was riding home in their horse-drawn cart. There was no way they could have been warned of the coming storms - I guess the caterpillars or whatever were silent. High winds blew their buggy off the road and into a river where four of their seven children perished, the youngest 7 mos and the oldest 12 yrs. Greenies probably think that's a good thing, since they hate kids and technology.
The sad thing about the Amish is that they send their horses to New Holland when they're no longer useful. From there the horses will be lucky to get rescued. If not rescued they go to slaughter. The Amish also run puppy mills.
@MsCollada They also provide a lot of ex-harness racers (Standardbreds) with a second home after their racing career is over.
Unfortunately, there are more horses in the world than homes for them, and until people stop breeding so many horses carelessly, that's probably not going to change a whole lot. Many of the Amish take very good care of their horses. They're their only transportation and means of livelihood.
No biggie, but I believe those are mules! They're much bigger and stronger than horses, and the Amish use them for farm work. Or dragging the occasional truck out of a ditch :)
