they were both brilliant but chris has my vote as he was a much more adult beleviable doctor i find david tennent and unserious is a bit too happy for some of the situations
Okay, in my own opinion, just my opinion, i feel that david tends to steal the whole show. He doesnt give any of the other actors a chance. I just love the way eccleston interacts with rose and jack and mickey and everyone. David can do an awesome long speech or monologue, but I love watching the way chris works off of everyone around him.
They've both been excellent, but I'd say that Tennant edges out Eccleston by just a little bit. Of course, that might just be because he was my first doctor (I went back and watched series 1 later), or because he stuck around longer so I've seen more of him. But they were definitely both brilliant in very different ways and I'm hoping Matt Smith is up to the challenge of succeeding Tennant.
What does the Doctor look like? Like whoever plays him. Not sure what an 'emo' is, but to me, Martt Smith looks like a soft version of Gordon Ramsay... With an enormous loaf of hair...
However, I think we should susopend judgment until he's settled into the role. I mean, I had my doubts about Daniel Craig as 007, but he's flipping ACE
Eccleston was king. David's okay he just grins too much and doesn't take anything seriously and when he does he overacts to the point it makes me laugh when I'm supposed to be enthralled in the dramatic nature of the moment. I really wish he would've done one more series, the dynamic between Rose and him was much different and much more interesting to watch than Rose and the 10th Doctor.
I agree. I've watched Doctor who since the sixties so the Doctor as a romantic lead wasn't really my thing. I thought the dynamic between Rose and Nine led to better, moved involved stories, both drama, horror and comedy. I would have love to see Chris and Freema as the Doctor and Martha, if they could have kept up that Hepburn/Tracy thing from Smith and Jones, and dropped the adolecscent crush theme of Season Three. But I loved what David brought to the role as well.
Yeah the crush Martha had on the Doctor was a little annoying, it's like you didn't really appreciate Martha until the end of the season when she was instrumental in saving everyone. A big part of that was the whole season it felt like she was just jealous over Rose and googley-eyed over the Doctor.
Well, I don't think she was jealous of Rose, but jealous of the Doctor's feelings for her, and the Doctor was less than honest with her. It didn't help that he made her a maid in 1913, she had to endure all that class and race crap from him; it was like a slap in the face. But I think they wasted her and the Doctor, because there were so many fascinating things The Doctor could explre with another scientist. If there was any time to bring the Rani, that was it.
Hmm perhaps you're right. I definitely was annoyed with how Human Nature and Family of Blood played out and that she was wasted in terms of her being a scientist.
Human nature was written for another Doctor and companion who was supposed to act as his "sister". They didn't bother to develope Martha's role or show how her condition would have changed how the Doctor looked at his attitudes towards class and so-called race. That's just poor science fiction writing. But as you say, in the can. I wonder if Chris would consider coming back with the 11th Doctor in the new series? Moffat likes the old style WHO, the horror and comedy elements.
Christopher Eccleston was more serious and a great actor. He should have stayed on a bit longer. But i gotta say David Tennant is my Doctor because he is just so amazing i love how funny David is he brought this energy to the show and i love how he is just so brilliant and amazing and he is one of my favorite actors!!! I love him and i really am gonna miss him on the show!!! T__T
i like Eccleston better. Tennant was too comical like the time he was suppose to have passed out in Rose's arms but he looked like he was smiling. I stopped watching ever since. I would watch if they only bring back Eccleston.
Compared to Ainley's Master? Shit. But Ainley's Master style doesn't really fit in with Tennant's Doctor, so Simm's was an understandable choice that I quite don't like at all. That being said John Simm is a great actor though, did a good job in Life on Mars.
Anyway Eccleston is the superior actor, Tennant's style is good for a chuckle.
I might be on my own here, but I think Eccleston put more acting effort into evry single episode. Don't get me wrong, both doctors are great, but before a Tennant Episode begins you know where you stand, but Eccleston was so much more unpredictable and genuine at the same time, making all his episodes more memorable. He had his heart in it all the way, does anyone agree?
I'm completely torn. Both Doctors were so unique and had approaches that worked perfectly for each of them. Sometimes I'll be watching David Tennant and be thinking I love him the best, and then I'll watch Eccleston and I'll think the opposite. I'm just glad we've gotten them both!
Eccleston was a great choice for the doctor because he was so totally different from any doctor before. There was no attempt to copy the past. A great was to re-start the new series after a long hiatus.
Tennant makes a great doctor for a different reason, sort of combining traits from other doctors - Tom Baker, Peter Davison and others. Kind of looney and eccentric.
I'm stuck halfway for each. Eccleston was amazing becuase he kind of symbolized the strong side of the doctor, but Tennant is great becuase he kind of shows that after all these years the doctor is somewhat fed up and angry, but still emotional. Sorry if I ramble.
I dunno, David Tennant just flicks from excited and way over the top hyper to really sad and quiet. eccleston had alot more depth.. and dare i say it more chemistry with rose? just my humble opinion :)
I like Eccelston because he could be proved wrong and he was soo believable. Tennant is good but he just does the same thing every episode, hes soo happy and he says the same thing, "if you dont stop, i'll stop you" and stuff like that, i liked him in series 2 but the rest he was just sort of the same, but i still like both
go eccelston,
PS dos anyone no an interview with eccelston that talks about y he left the sho?
I didn't even bother to watch this video. It might have been boring. MIGHT. All i heard was you saying hello. Are you american? Anyway, Tennant is by far the best. So is Freema Agyeman.
The different between the doctors, is that Tennant act the doctor, Eccleston is the doctor. I think their both are good but Eccleston is the best to my opinion. But im glad the new doctor wasnt as bad that he ruined the whole doctor who concept. I like both the doctors, but i didnt like that Billie Piper went out of the show. Im glad she comes back again.
SIDES. If we're going to be silly shippy fangirls, and don't even pretend not to be, NineRose beats TenRose hands down. If you care to argue that point, I have just four words. GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE. IF I HAD MY WAY IT WOULD STILL BE NINE. And Jacobi!Master wouldn't have friggin' DIED. I mean, Simms was good, but IT WAS FRIGGIN' SIR DEREK JACOBI! WHY WHY WHY ONLY ONE EPISODE?!!!
But seriously, Tennant or Eccleston? No contest. Eccleston any day! He's got such a powerful presence...in any scene, you can just feel the magnetism. He's a great actor. Tennant is, too, don't get me wrong, but Nine'll always be higher on my list than Ten. Plus, I think Nine's more handsome than Ten. If that matters, which it really shouldn't for the Doctor. But that scene in Father's Day with Doctor sans leather jacket...? *Swoons*
Eccleston was sarcastic and inhuman and 'the best'
tennant is witty and i love how he is more human because i like to imagine that rose changed him to be more human...
i love how tennant says 'OHH thats briLLiant' because i do that ALL of the time..lol...when i saw Utopia and the watch thing made me clap my hands and scream: 'BRILLIANT!! THATS BRILLIANT! OMG FANTASTIC!'...
Well in my opinion, i think David Tennant is better as the Doctor. Especially in series 3- he developed the Doctor's character more and showed a different side to him. He could show the doctor at his stong and weak moments very well and that made, i think, the Doctor's character more believable. He also brings alot of energy to the role, so if you had never watched Dr Who before, and you did'nt know what it was about, Tennant dominated the screen, so you could tell he was the main character.
Christopher Eccleston was pure BRILLIANCE! His character had so many humanly emotions and such a brilliant strong personality. And what really made me love him was the fact that he could be proved wrong. Unlike 10 who is always right... grrrr... Plus, I really REALLY hated Rose with the 10th doctor. She acted so odd and different around him. But with 9 they were so amazing together because they both kept each other in line. I miss Chris so much. I would literally kill to have him back.
I agree entirely. Tennant, I find overacts in every scene "Thas brilliant, OHHH thas briLLiant!!!" while Eccleston brought such sincerity to the role. I hope he comes back in a episode like "Time Crash" or "The Three Doctors".
all well and good for those whove actually seen TB, zelda ^_^() i myself havent, as i was born 3 years after his turn ended and havent been able to find much of his work. of course, if you have links/suggestions... :D
I was born way after his run. About three years before the Doctor Who movie (which i loved) i think. Made in 1996 i think? Oh well. I've been using Veoh and Netflix to watch stuff, but I have found stuff here, including Logopolis (made me sad, Doctor died)
never been to netflix. may try it eventually... and i ~have~ tried veoh, but you know have to have veohtv to see full episodes, which this public pc wont allow me to download >_>
ill try to find classic who around here again tho, thanks.
as for the regeneration thing, from what i understand, thats kinda up in the air *thoughtful* i havent seen that far, but somebody told me the Master was in his 15th body before he finally copped it. granted, that probably takes breaking some Time Lord law or somethin... :/
Actually, the Master could have still lived on. He chose not to regenerate because that was the best way to really break the Doctor. For him it was kind of anything to beat the Doctor, even if it meant the Master himself dying.
hm. good point ^_^ thanks. itll probably be ages til ill get as far as that, since ive just started in on S2 (yay for amazon :D S1 and 2 are now mine... whee!) *shrugs* but thatll be interesting to see, im sure. still, it does make me wonder how he managed to do it, since 13 is supposed to be the limit :/
tis true, tis true... a difficult choice indeed XD Chris was my first experience with DW (and i was instantly smitten/fascinated), but David has his own kinda-boyish appeal... *shrugs* if i absolutely had to choose, id go with Nine. those eyes and that seemingly bi-polar attitude of his just gets to me. ive never seen someone flash from angst to joy and back again so quickly, and that grin of his just melts me in my shoes XD Dumbo ears! haha
Chris has a very strong personality,I'd even say he's the personification of dignity, but he does have some nicely crazy moments too :) He's fascinating, making you watch him in awe, attracting you (ok, I mean "me")...And he sometimes makes Dr Who a Shakesperean tragedy.
David is a clown (in a good way!!!).He's like one of those people you just have to adore because they're so sweetly crazy and funny and all.Plus he seems more affectionate and caring.Or maybe more capable of showing those feelings
A clown? ^^ I think the word you're looking for is "total basket-case."
DT is very emote, sometimes to the point of exaggeration, but it works very well for the character; lines delivered with any less craziness and enthusiasm would seem dull and awkward.
Chris Eccleston... I can't really say. I actually haven't seen much of him, can't seem to find any of his episodes anywhere. -goes to look-
Oh well, English is not my mother tongue, so maybe you're right :) But it's true, DT's version of the doctor requires all that craziness...
Someone called Fandoctorwho1000 has most of the episodes on YouTube, though parts of the really old ones have disappeared by now :( But there's still plenty to get to know number 9 ;)
And yes, I know David has done his fair share of snogging with members of his own sex which I praise him for all the same. Kudos. But if I absolutely had to chose, I might have to say I'd vote for Chris but a very tough choice and good debate topic. Thanks for this!
Chris has that hansome, strong look and yes, those ears (and nose) are so attractive. Honistly. (i have a thing for big ears and noses.) Where as David has that sex appeal of a younger man with a thinner bild. But Chris was very hot in his younger years. He gets extra points from me tho, for letting John (cap. jack) kiss him. Now that takes a real man! lol. cont...
I think Chris captures more emotion in his quorky way of acting, he is brill. David's got the young sexy thing going for him but even though he's older, Chris has that unmatched handsomeness that is all his own. I believe Chris is a better actor simply because of experience but David deff gives him a run for his money there. Chris has more controle over himself as an actor which made him smashing to watch. They are both very good looking but in diff ways; cont...
you know i didn't like eccleston because i saw season 2 first. But upon watching the series in its entirety have decided that I can't decide. :( I like them both. I did wish Eccleston had stayed on a little longer. (LOVE THE EARS!)
I think, in their own ways, Christopher Eccleston & David Tennant are equally as good. But, Having been my 1st real Doctor (I watched repeat Tom Baker eps whe I was a kid, but all I can remember about them is what he looked like), Chris DEFINATELY wins the debate for me.
i suppose; i did actually like eccleston at the time but now i like tennant better! not JUST bcos of his stunning gd looks but bcos he's a gd actor too!
the writers and directors have taken into account both actor's personal strengths. for david tennant, it's his hilarious expressions and comic timing. for christopher eccleston, it's his on-screen integrity and his ability to pin down the sarcastic, brooding, angsty doctor. i think the writers would have kept that in mind.
I'm throwing my vote behind Eccleston. I'll confess that I'm new to Doctor Who, outside of my dad scarring me for life with the original series when I was a little 'un. Eccleston is the main reason I gave the series a shot, after he won me over in Heroes. I've only seen three of Tennant's episodes and thus far he's not quite giving me the same degree of warm fuzzies, although he is interesting..
I've heard that he's not really the last timelord in the 3rd or 4th series
my dad (my doctor who buddy:P) prefers Eccleston and I prefer Tennant, so maybe it's an old people thing? lol
btw, I heard that Tennant probably won't leave for a while, people twisted his words around
and David Tennant is the 10th Doc and there are supposed to be 13, I believe. they've contradicted themselves so many times that they'll probably just keep going anyway and say they made a mistake XD
LOL I'm 26 and I love both Doctors but if I had to chose between the two, I'd wanna be with the 9th Doctor rather than the 10th! I LOVED Chris Eccleston as the Doctor! (David Tennant I love also, just differently and not quite as much)
Hey! I live in Canada too, and I prefer David Tennant. He does have more expressions, and I think he shows the Doctor's love for Rose as more of a bf/gf thing than a fatherish thing. Plus he's sexy. ;P
Hmm I might agree with that except, the 10th Doctor kissed other women more passionately than he ever kissed Rose. In fact he never has kissed Rose, Rose kissed him (while possessed no less and he didn't really kiss her back) and the second time it was his human version). The 9th Doctor however did kiss her in a non-fatherly kinda way and don't tell me it was just to get the time vortex out, there's gotta be other ways to draw a time vortex out of someone lol.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Just stumbled upon this You Tube channel! Totally agree about Eccleston's depressing, emo Doctor, while there were some admirable qualities, I think Tennant's doctor is better. I really could not stand Nine's constant anger, and think Eccleston is more suited to tossing annoying, emo Spider-Man wannabes off buildings!
hmm david tennant is sexy but i don't think that counts. Personally i prefer eccleston as the doctor because he character was really consistant whereas tennant i don't know one minute he loves rose then he snogs reinette one minute he says don't listen to reason and the next he can't believe in the devil because reason tells him not to. I think tennants doctor takes rose for granted and doesn't realise until he loses her in the idiots lantern and then doomsday he really loves her.
i think both actors have different qualities. i think the 9th doctor and rose were better suited cos eccleston was like a father figure to rose, and when he regenerated, rose and tennant were like tennage buddies which i thought wasn't as good as b4. but then again david tennant is pretty funny and the things that he comes out with on doctor who are funny.
Hi, don't worry about being the only Dr who Fans over there, I'm in britain and i'm about the only one i know who lives near me, who's my age that really watches it, which is sad. Right, well Though my first doctor was Christopher Eccleston and i thought no-one could ever repace him when he re-generated but i do love David tennant and i love them both for different reasons and i suppose thats the way it will always be.
well liz and i don't live anywhere near you. and i thought that there was no one who could replace Christopher Eccleston either but now that i have seen David Tennant i think that he is better (if you like Christopher Eccleston that is your thing).
How ahve we confused you? And I'm still atempting to decide. It was David Tennant but then I started re-watching the Chris E. eps and I fell in love again. *sigh* I suppose I will always fluctuate between the two. And your screename explains your choice, of course!
Oh my god I was so awkward in high school O.o

i like Eccleston better. Tennant was too comical like the time he was suppose to have passed out in Rose's arms but he looked like he was smiling. I stopped watching ever since. I would watch if they only bring back Eccleston.

Not to rob the discusion here, but what did everyone think of john Simm as the Master?
0mega616 3 years ago
Compared to Ainley's Master? Shit. But Ainley's Master style doesn't really fit in with Tennant's Doctor, so Simm's was an understandable choice that I quite don't like at all. That being said John Simm is a great actor though, did a good job in Life on Mars.
Anyway Eccleston is the superior actor, Tennant's style is good for a chuckle.
UltraTien 3 years ago 3

I LOVE Doctor Who!!!!!!!
Animals319 3 years ago
Eccleston was a great choice for the doctor because he was so totally different from any doctor before. There was no attempt to copy the past. A great was to re-start the new series after a long hiatus.
Tennant makes a great doctor for a different reason, sort of combining traits from other doctors - Tom Baker, Peter Davison and others. Kind of looney and eccentric.
teainthesahara 3 years ago 6
I'm stuck halfway for each. Eccleston was amazing becuase he kind of symbolized the strong side of the doctor, but Tennant is great becuase he kind of shows that after all these years the doctor is somewhat fed up and angry, but still emotional. Sorry if I ramble.

I dunno, David Tennant just flicks from excited and way over the top hyper to really sad and quiet. eccleston had alot more depth.. and dare i say it more chemistry with rose? just my humble opinion :)
rainbowgrl696 3 years ago 3
i do agree there was alot more chemistry between eccleston and rose
but david brings across a more sensitive
side to the doctor much like many of the other doctor in the past who have loved and lost there companions
thats why i have to pick tennant over eccelston :)
fuckedupspaz123 3 years ago 4
definately david tennant!!!! i liked eccleston but David is just a much better actor! he is fun but he can get really serious when he wants to!

Eccelston for life favorite doctor ever
squeakyduckquack 3 years ago
I like Eccelston because he could be proved wrong and he was soo believable. Tennant is good but he just does the same thing every episode, hes soo happy and he says the same thing, "if you dont stop, i'll stop you" and stuff like that, i liked him in series 2 but the rest he was just sort of the same, but i still like both
go eccelston,
PS dos anyone no an interview with eccelston that talks about y he left the sho?

ScintillatingTurnip 3 years ago
Yes, Nine/Rose beats Ten/Rose.
AnimalsInMyHeart 1 year ago 4
...TOM BAKER! 8D
*Swoons*

I love both of them...neither is better really...

Clxxx101 3 years ago
I sure wish people would get over themselves; they were (are) both fucking brilliant.

CaramelChai 4 years ago 5
I agree entirely. Tennant, I find overacts in every scene "Thas brilliant, OHHH thas briLLiant!!!" while Eccleston brought such sincerity to the role. I hope he comes back in a episode like "Time Crash" or "The Three Doctors".
locustsymphony 4 years ago 4
You're right. I just think Tennent isn't suited to it. He acts like he's on a children's show too much. Eccleston was so much more likeable.

kathl85 4 years ago 2
as for the regeneration thing, from what i understand, thats kinda up in the air *thoughtful* i havent seen that far, but somebody told me the Master was in his 15th body before he finally copped it. granted, that probably takes breaking some Time Lord law or somethin... :/
CassandraMotou 4 years ago
Actually, the Master could have still lived on. He chose not to regenerate because that was the best way to really break the Doctor. For him it was kind of anything to beat the Doctor, even if it meant the Master himself dying.
Rainstarhasastick 4 years ago
hm. good point ^_^ thanks. itll probably be ages til ill get as far as that, since ive just started in on S2 (yay for amazon :D S1 and 2 are now mine... whee!) *shrugs* but thatll be interesting to see, im sure. still, it does make me wonder how he managed to do it, since 13 is supposed to be the limit :/
CassandraMotou 4 years ago
tis true, tis true... a difficult choice indeed XD Chris was my first experience with DW (and i was instantly smitten/fascinated), but David has his own kinda-boyish appeal... *shrugs* if i absolutely had to choose, id go with Nine. those eyes and that seemingly bi-polar attitude of his just gets to me. ive never seen someone flash from angst to joy and back again so quickly, and that grin of his just melts me in my shoes XD Dumbo ears! haha
CassandraMotou 4 years ago 3
Chris has a very strong personality,I'd even say he's the personification of dignity, but he does have some nicely crazy moments too :) He's fascinating, making you watch him in awe, attracting you (ok, I mean "me")...And he sometimes makes Dr Who a Shakesperean tragedy.
David is a clown (in a good way!!!).He's like one of those people you just have to adore because they're so sweetly crazy and funny and all.Plus he seems more affectionate and caring.Or maybe more capable of showing those feelings
skritka 4 years ago 4
-goes to look-
Rainstarhasastick 4 years ago
Oh well, English is not my mother tongue, so maybe you're right :) But it's true, DT's version of the doctor requires all that craziness...
Someone called Fandoctorwho1000 has most of the episodes on YouTube, though parts of the really old ones have disappeared by now :( But there's still plenty to get to know number 9 ;)

I think Chris captures more emotion in his quorky way of acting, he is brill. David's got the young sexy thing going for him but even though he's older, Chris has that unmatched handsomeness that is all his own. I believe Chris is a better actor simply because of experience but David deff gives him a run for his money there. Chris has more controle over himself as an actor which made him smashing to watch. the writers and directors have taken into account both actor's personal strengths. for david tennant, it's his hilarious expressions and comic timing. for christopher eccleston, it's his on-screen integrity and his ability to pin down the sarcastic, brooding, angsty doctor. i think the writers would have kept that in mind.
sophiargh 4 years ago 3
I'm throwing my vote behind Eccleston. I'll confess that I'm new to Doctor Who, outside of my dad scarring me for life with the original series when I was a little 'un. Eccleston is the main reason I gave the series a shot, after he won me over in Heroes. I've only seen three of Tennant's episodes and thus far he's not quite giving me the same degree of warm fuzzies, although he is interesting..
Oo! But I do have Tennant to thank for Claude XD

I like David better personally, and I live in Canada too!

I've heard that he's not really the last timelord in the 3rd or 4th series
my dad (my doctor who buddy:P) prefers Eccleston and I prefer Tennant, so maybe it's an old people thing? lol
btw, I heard that Tennant probably won't leave for a while, people twisted his words around
and David Tennant is the 10th Doc and there are supposed to be 13, I believe. they've contradicted themselves so many times that they'll probably just keep going anyway and say they made a mistake XD
dittodog1yr 4 years ago
LOL I'm 26 and I love both Doctors but if I had to chose between the two, I'd wanna be with the 9th Doctor rather than the 10th! I LOVED Chris Eccleston as the Doctor! (David Tennant I love also, just differently and not quite as much)
Queen0ftheCastle 3 years ago 4
Hey! I live in Canada too, and I prefer David Tennant. He does have more expressions, and I think he shows the Doctor's love for Rose as more of a bf/gf thing than a fatherish thing. Plus he's sexy. ;P
DoctorWho0151654 4 years ago
Hmm I might agree with that except, the 10th Doctor kissed other women more passionately than he ever kissed Rose. In fact he never has kissed Rose, Rose kissed him (while possessed no less and he didn't really kiss her back) and the second time it was his human version). The 9th Doctor however did kiss her in a non-fatherly kinda way and don't tell me it was just to get the time vortex out, there's gotta be other ways to draw a time vortex out of someone lol.

Tresjolie9 4 years ago
hmm david tennant is sexy but i don't think that counts.
04nbod 4 years ago 3
i think both actors have different qualities. i think the 9th doctor and rose were better suited cos eccleston was like a father figure to rose, and when he regenerated, rose and tennant were like tennage buddies which i thought wasn't as good as b4. but then again david tennant is pretty funny and the things that he comes out with on doctor who are funny.
