The studio version is simply amazing, but this live version is not that good. At around 5:00 to 5:05 he misses quite a few notes. Besides that, the guitar seems to have too much mid range freq.

Amazing song. This song and a few others puts him on Dylan's level. Not the same level of productivity, perhaps, but his best songs are as good as Dylan's best songs.

What I think makes Mark the greatest, is his ability to not only play amazing guitar, in many styles, but to write amazing songs, most so called amazing guitarists don't write amazing songs!!

mark's natural method of delivery, understated etc is part of his appeal. like he's just playing in his living room, no nerves etc. makes you think he's in control man and also is cool for him to apparently not give a shit. when the gallachers stand around still in their duffel coats people don't say they're boring. it's called presence. and people have it in different ways man

He's up there for sure but i dont think you can make a statement like that... he might be your favorite by some distance and who knows maybe he is the best but i dont think he is by a lot... clapton? hendrix? rory gallagher? srv? even newer guys like john frusciante are in the discussion

You have a point. Its all down to taste and what your ear is into. the guys you mention are all great players with their own styles. Hendrix, although i am not a great fan of a lot of his stuff, was probably even more groundbreaking than Eric Clapton. However, I think my initial post was a response to someones stupid remarks about Mark's boring style. When Sultans of Swing first hit the scene it was so original and nothing like anyone had been done before.

it was 96, the first solo album of mark knopfler, people stay have in mind the dire straits band hits.. i appreciated anyway that album from its release, mark did at this A night in London much effort to present his new music solo style. great.
