Actually, this really could be: The Beatles -- featuring a "new" singer Jackie Lomax. Recorded around the time of the "White Album?" When things were grim. Could it be the other Beatles were "auditioning" Lomax as a possible Lennon replacement? I'm just asking the question. By the way, Ringo's drums are brilliant, as is Nicky Hopkins' piano. This is a lost killer "Beatles" track -- with a hat tip to Jackie Lomax. I think he did a fine job. Take Lennon's place? Mmm not sure.
@lastrada52 No, John would never have been booted out. Paul and George were both nearly replaced (by Klaus and Eric Clapton respectively) because they couldn't get on with each other. It would make no sense for them to decide they were going to try it without John, because the problem was Paul. Also, they needed John's songwriting abilities.
@tomwantshelp - Do you think the The Beatle name would have meant anything if 2 -- Paul & George were booted? What you say is feasible. But I don't think the logic came from Lennon. Maybe a "management" decision. On paper = great. Reality = a disaster. The Beatles were "magic" together. Not even Ringo could have been replaced. Van Halen could replace David Lee Roth & The Who "could" replace Keith Moon. But not The Beatles. Each one "was" a "Beatle." It's too bad it had to happen.
@lastrada52 They wouldn't have got rid of BOTH of them, only one. When George left during the Get Back sessions, John proposed making Clapton a Beatle if he didn't return in a few days. It was also proposed that the other three would abandon Paul and form a band with Klaus on bass.
In any case, the Beatle name would mean nothing without Lennon (it could have withstood George leaving, maybe they could have credibly continued without Paul) because it was his band.
@tomwantshelp - That makes sense. I remember that era when George walked out on those sessions. I liked all four Beatles -- but I believe George came closest to a true Beatle sound on some of his solo tracks. With Paul, to my ears -- only "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Everynight," and "No More Lonely Nights," ever sounded Beatlesque to me. Until -- he created "Dance Tonight," that was clever -- but it seemed like an "answer" to George's "I Got My Mind Set On You" video. Do you agree?
@tomwantshelp - YouTube doesn't allow for lots of character space -- though they are more generous than most. I would add McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" to that list of Beatle-like songs he did solo. But, with the possibility of Lennon giving him some shit about it. I doubt The Beatles would have done "Jet" and many of those Band On the Run tracks. It just doesn't sound...Beatles to me -- as a band effort. (Just an opinion).
Thanks for posting this masterpiece. I'm certainly not going to get involved with any Beatle discussion. This is, and always has been, one of my top 3 favorite records of all time, since I first heard it about 40 years ago. To me, it doesn't matter so much who did what...the combination of the arrangement, the work of all the true musicians playing together, and the really unique vocal sound of Jackie Lomax makes this song so tremendous.
does anybody know if George played the second half of the solo that seems lower in volume than the first half? it seems more like his playing than clapton. It repeats around the 3:13 mark
In addition to Jackie Lomax, the single features George Harrison and Eric Clapton on guitars, Paul McCartney on bass, Ringo Starr on drums, and Nicky Hopkins on piano The song is notable for being among the few non-Beatles songs to feature at least three members of the band. wow
this was George's answer to 'Get Back.' It is basically a commercial for the Maharishi and TM ... 'very simple process takes you there ... ' George and Eric Clapton played guitar on the track and much of the album, "Is This What You Want?" By far, the best non-Beatle album on Apple ... a close second would be James Taylor...who, as far as I'm concerned, never matched the Apple album.
@DetroitJJ Truly "underground" radio, playing music that you would never hear anywhere else. The FM stations that cropped up afterwards were merely cheap imitations. How about Dan Carlisle? When I moved to the Bay Area, I discovered him working on another great station, KSAN. Then one day, without warning to anyone (staff included) they went CW!
I'm so pissed off about this, not only is this one of the best harrison tracks EVER, this exceeds virtually everything mccartney has ever done. I would love to know who elected paul leader to decide this wasn't beatle worthy, I want a face I can punch to make this right. this should have been a beatle song, and now I'll never hear a decent version with george on vocals, that's not fair to george, that's not fair to me and that's not fair to everyone else with a set of ears.
Yes, it's a great song, but come on, it hardly exceeds much of what McCartney has ever done (rolling eyes). Blame John for insisting on including that 9 minute waste of time he and Ono farted out called Revolution #9.
@BrownBrown90 pretty much everything paul does is children's music, and he's always been so proud of that. and the entire group was involved with revolution 9. it was just another one of their backmasking gimmicks, it wasn't a song, it was a product.
@ledZeppelin7680 :O its not children's music!.. I love all his songs. get back, let it be, i've just seen a face, eleanor rigby, the list goes on and on! :)) ....And Paul wasn't involved with revolution 9, it was just john, george, and yoko.. I also wouldn't say it was a gimmick, it was what they felt was art at the time.. they were proud of it and felt they were being innovative...even though personally i'm not a big fan...and I think it's scary as hell :S
@tar1424 paul played organ on the song, and ringo did backwards percussion. it was a gimmick like a lot of their stuff was, the difference is this is one of the few times where paul wasn't the one coming up with the corporate bullshit. his music was and always will be children's music.
@ledZeppelin7680 mccartenys children music??? sorry your wrong. paul had the most talent and could play all the instruments. he wrote some their best songs.
@BEARARMZ you're* you know, I gather you don't fully understand the situation right now, but imagine my amusement when I call his music children's music, and then children like you argue that it isn't.
@ledZeppelin7680 paul was ahead of his time if you actually look up some stuff. he wanted to make an electronic version of yesterday. he introduced john to activisism about the vietnam war. he is a genius
@BEARARMZ LMAO half the planet was apposed to the vietnam war, and you're trying to tell me paul was the only person around who knew what activism was?he ''wanted'' to make an electronic version of yesterday? really now, well I ''want'' to end all cruelty to animals but somehow I don't think that'll be winning me any nobel prizes.
@ledZeppelin7680 lame. i said mccartney not the whole world. because of paul, john went into his whole "rebelious " phase. look up yesterday, yes he did want to make an electronic version of yesterday. idk how that would sound but its true. paul could make commercial and non commmercial songs.mccartney came up with alot of ideas including sgt peppers, he was the best beatle
@BEARARMZ LMAO, and I suppose john was just a goodie two shoes when he was running around liverpool fighting people, drinking excessively, fucking random women and smashing mail boxes. john was always opposed to conformity, and growing up in england during the 40's, how can you not be anti war? citing something somebody ''wanted'' to do as an achievement is honestly the most moronic thing I've ever heard.
@kangalic Absolutely! Unfortunately John wasn't feeling like he wanted to be part of things at this point in time. This would have been a great Beatle song...
this whole album is good by any standards, great production ( I have the vinyl) good songs, name backing, a good outing from Harrison at this period !
Interesting how this sounds as much like "Between The Buttons"-era Stones as it does the Beatles. Maybe Hopkins played on that too, I don't remember....
This is about as bad as it gets with 1960's failures. What were they thinking with those vocals lol. Ok playing by good players but a lot of effort into something that just doesn't work.
Damn! Just heard this great "obscurity" on Pandora for the first time in over 40 years! Forgot this great "amalgam" of the best of the best existed! I well remember the debut of this Lomax tune and haven't heard it even once since then-- 'till now. 40+ years done and gone along with all the great tunes of the times! This is like from another lifetime! Thanks for posting this great rarity--but makes me feel old!
I bought this 45 in October 1968 purely on a lark - never heard it before - took it home and the first play lit me up like a Christmas tree - wore the record out within a year, and I'm now on my third copy. Getting pummelled by Eric and George side by side is such a joy - Eric really puts on a clinic here - and the whole band is getting off too! It's too bad the Beatles never worked this tune up the way this all-star crew did!
What a cool song! Aside from the Beatles, Badfinger are the only other Apple band that I like. I may have to pick up the Lomax album they're reissuing. Apple sure had quite a roster!
@Jethrofinger Agreed. The Beatles and Badfinger (and a bit of Mary Hopkin) are the only bands on the apple I really dig. I've recently gotten into this song, and I just love it to pieces! Great voice.
This is as close to a "lost" Beatles song as you're going to get. Harrison (first) and Clapton (second) both do solos on this. Ringo is drumming. Paul is on bass. Piano Nicky Hopkins. Can you IMAGINE being at this session???
Notice at the end Lomax is going "get back, get back . . . you don't belong" . . .
Now where have I heard that before?
You gotta wonder if that was swimming around in McCartney's head subconsciously . . . and a few months later . . .
Thank you for posting - best sound quality version of this on yourtube. Never realized Clapton, Preston, McCartney etc. were on this until today. Oddly enough the single version has a whole different band (I was told).
@stans06 It's actually Nicky Hopkins ("Revolution" and IMAGINE). Not Preston. If it were Preston that early on, can you imagine how much easier the Get Back sessions would have been from the beginning?
No, the album version was different. What you're hearing is the single version, cut at Abbey Road with Harrison, Clapton, McCartney, Ringo, and Nicky Hopkins. However, Harrison decided to take Lomax to LA to finish the record. They did re-record "Sour Milk Sea" with LA musicians, but subsequent reissues replaced the album version with the single version, which I think is actually better, I always thought the album version was quite dull.
@Mikemaniax I have the LP "Is This What You Want" and always found it hard to believe, given the drumming style, that the drummer on "Sour Milk Sea" was Ringo. Hearing the version on this video, though, proves to me that the single version was, indeed, different from the LP version. It is absolutely Ringo's drumming here, and it's very much in the mode of his drumming circa '68. Does this mean Clapton is not on the LP version either? The difference between the two versions is obvious.
@carlos7217 i don't hear the "get back" part, but i do hear Savoy Truffle in the verses which would make even more sense since george harrison wrote both songs

@darkhoarse820 The sessions' frictions were dramatized, if you've seen the cutting room floor stuff the lads were stoned and happy.

@thurberdrawing I guess not. I don't hear any guitar playing on the album that sounds anything like Clapton.

@carlos7217 i don't hear the "get back" part, but i do hear Savoy Truffle in the verses which would make even more sense since george harrison wrote both songs
