Whatever Ringo's supposed shortcomings as a drummer (I don't feel he had them, or if he did, did they matter), just think about how lousy those records might have sounded with some flashy technician flailing away, missing the point. All 4 Beatles had limited skills as players, but what makes them a GREAT band is how they played as a unit.

AND... Bernard "Pretty" Purdie played drums on Sexy Sadie on the White Album. That was recorded during the 7 to 10 days that Ringo had quit the band during the recording of the White Album. Want proof? Listen to the funky open/close hi hat hi hat riffs during the section where they sing the "oo's" on the "E" of beat 4. And it repeats. Ringo NEVER did that on ANY song of the Beatles.
@DrumTchr "Sexy Sadie" is so full of Ringo-ism, it could be used as a textbook definition of his mid-tempo style, particularly his penchant for hitting the hi-hat at half raised position before starting a fill. I would love to know what source you are using for this claim. Bernard Purdie, while a great drummer, is known for making boastful and dubious claims about sessions, at one time insisting that he played on all the early Beatles hits, something I know of no one taking seriously.
Hear the hi hat "barks" or "pee soup" (whatever you want to call it) that occurs on the
"E" of beat 4 and repeats several times?
I defy you to direct me to ANY song the Beatles did that Ringo has played this hi hat bark. You won't be able to. That was a lick that Ringo did not know HOW to play much less pull it off on Sexy Sadie. Ringo also quit the band when the White Album was being recorded for 10 days. They kept recording.
@DrumTchr While that little Ringo nifty-ism doesn't appear on any other song I can think of that is hardly "proof" that he didn't play on the track! Ringo played SONGS not merely patterns, which is why he was perfect for the Beatles, among other reasons. Besides, that drum lick you refer to is EASY to play. Drummers of far less skill of either Ringo or Purdie could play that beat. I can & I'm not a drummer!!! Ringo DID indeed quit for a few days and Paul played drums on "USSR" and "Prudence,"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@mrtwang32 I really don't care what you believe. It was 1968 and very few drummers were playing that funky hi hat beat. Ringo was not one of them. Purdie was 1 of the few that did AT THAT TIME. Ringo was not a funky drummer. Purdie was. I agree that Purdie goes over the top and tells stories. Musicians get called to do sessions and just get paid studio time. Others were on the White album that didn't get credit (Eric Clapton, Nicky Hopkins not to mention all the orchestral musicians they used.)
@DrumTchr I wouldn't go as far as to say I personally care what you believe, but it does concern me that a knowledgeable drumming person would put forth this opinion, based on -- what? -- an assumption that Ringo was not capable of playing such a simple -- though -- clever lick. Beatles recordings are full unique drum beats and fills. Clapton and Jackie Lomax's contributions are documented if not in the liner notes, but this Purdie fantasy is groundless. Even HE doesn't make this claim.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@mrtwang32 I didn't know you were standing next to me when Purdie and I personally spoke. Look, it's not a fantasy and obviously you are not aware of WHEN certain "drumisms" came into existence. It's not an assumption that Ringo couldn't play it in 1968. It's a fact. I'll say I'm wrong if you find me JUST ONE song where he plays that lick prior to the Beatles breakup. Purdie confirmed it WAS him after I made this discovery. It took 4 days to record that tune. Purdie played THAT PART of the song.
@DrumTchr Thanks for finally providing the source of your allegation. YOU! Confirmed by the man who made a bit of a laughing stock of himself with claims that he played on the Beatles first three albums. It may be true he overdubbed over the PETE BEST tracks from the Tony Sheridan sessions for US release but his involvement with the Beatles ends there. Please listen to the fills on "Sadie": so very clearly Ringo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@mrtwang32 Now you need to get into the insults? I have not insulted you. I challenged you to find ANY song Ringo did with the band where he used that lick. As I said, "You can't". It was 1968, and for Ringo to have done that lick would have meant that he damn near invented it and all drummers that wanted to be funky copied this lick. That lick was NOT in Ringo's "tool box". But I bet Purdie played his drums on that tune to make the sound consistent with the rest of the project.
@DrumTchr No harm. I respect anyone who cares enough about the music and the players to pursue this sort of investigation. Purdie's involvement w the Tony Sheridan tapes and his claims of playing on the Beatles first 2 or 3 lps has been covered extensively on the web. You are the only person I have ever come across who puts him at EMI studios recording in Ringo's absence. Based on one minor yet effective drums pattern that to my ears is neither difficult to play nor very funky. Peace
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@mrtwang32 I'm just saying to research WHEN drummers started playing this lick. I have. So called "expert" Beatle books notwithstanding, you don't know WHAT was recorded and by who during the time of Ringo's absence. You were not there. You have studied the Beatle books. I have studied the history of drumming. Ringo's legacy is assured by the fact that the Beatles would have sounded much different had he not drummed with them.
@DrumTchr I respect that you are a more experienced and better drummer than me but I do believe "Sexy Sadie" is pure Ringo. I'm not insulting you, but did you even studied ALL of Ringo's licks from the early days to Abbey Road? The fills themselves are VERY Ringo to me on that song. That close-open high hat pattern Ringo used there is no surprise to me at all. Listen to Hello Goodbye watch?v=cU1OSwzhIKI, 1:21-1:41 and YNGMYM watch?v=8G8_XpqM8vc 0:24-0:50. Ringo DID use good high hat patterns.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Ishi680 The videos you cite have nothing to do with what I'm talking about. There, Ringo opens the hi hat on the "on" or "off" beat. It's another thing entirely (a VAST difference) to do it on the "E" of beat 4, which is the 2nd 16th note of 4-16th notes. (4E&a) In 1968 and '69 the only guys doing this were Motown drummers and other drummers introducing the world to "funk". Yes ishi680, I study ALL drummers & the history of drumming. I've been playing & studying drums & music for over 50 years.
@DrumTchr And just because nothing "exactly" like that was done on other Beatles songs doesn't mean that Ringo did not try something new at least once or it wasn't him playing and The Beatles also get influence from others. You are the only one I ever saw that made this claim on Sexy Sadie.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Ishi680 You certainly can believe anything you want. All that being said, let me repeat that Ringo was the best drummer for the Beatles. The Beatles didn't need a flashy drummer. They needed someone to play and put the music 1st. Ringo did just that. BTW, in my last post it sounds like I'm an old fart. Not really. I started playing and studying drums and music in 1959 when I was 5 years old. As a professional musician, I will be a student of the music until my last breath. Learning is endless.
@DrumTchr Yes, but but in your earlier posts, you seem to have a mistaken thought of Ringo not playing at Sexy Sadie and instead Purdie whilst most if not all drummers who are well familiar with Ringo's sound would agree that it was Ringo on that track because of the signature fills. Learning is in deed endless. Ringo learned a lot in his Beatle days and I have learned a lot from Ringo. Peace and love.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Ishi680 I stand by my statement that at least in those 8 measures I speak of... it was not Ringo playing. Those funky hi hat "barks" on the E of 4 was NOT Ringo's "signature" playing. If it WAS.... you would be able to show me where he has done it before. For something to be signature, it would have to be done many times over a period of time... not just once. Ringo was NOT a funky drummer. Musical, yes.... funky... no.
@DrumTchr Mate, on my first ever reply to you, I sent you links to songs where you might wanna fancy Ringo's use of the high hats with those. One was "Hello Goodbye" at 1:21-1:41 and "You Never Give Me Your Money" at 1:07-1:31 on the full song since I sent you a link with only the isolated drum part on YNGMYM and you might also wanna fancy his high hat work on Anna, In My Life, And Your Bird Can Sing. Those may not exactly be "funky" but there you got the similarities.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Ishi680 The only similarity is the fact that he opens and closes the hi hat. WHERE he does it is the whole point. That's right, he was NOT a funky drummer. Find me a song in his body of work with the Beatles where he opens/closes the hi hat on the "E" of the beat. You can't. The Beatles spent 4 days recording Sexy Sadie and during part of that time was when Ringo "quit" the group. His drums were still in the studio. As I said, believe what you want. This discussion really can't go any further.
I'd like to see all you Ringo haters be allowed to join a very large popular band and have been admired by them for years before you joined like Ringo did. The Beatles admired Ringo who was in a band bigger than The Beatles were in the early .Ringo doesn't need fancy solos to prove he's a good drummer, drumming or playing any instrument is about making the song sound good. a wild solo in the middle of a quiet song like Hey Jude would be awful! Become more famous than him then you can judge
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@4FabBEATLES I'm no Ringo hater. He was perfect for that band.
You should know that Ringo has said that he is not a good drummer... but I would disagree because he made the music sound good. And THAT is what it's about.
Ringo is probably the most influential rock drummer of all time....watch The Beatles at their 1st concert in the US on Feb.11,1964..and then tell us that Ringo sucks...GREAT drumming from Ringo at the DC gig!!!
yes, i do. one of the tracks was ballard of john and yoko. John lennon made a good joke about ringo. He said "Not only was Ringo Starr not the best drummer in the world, he wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles"
@alxchild Paul played on 'Dear Prudence' and 'Back In The USSR'. Everything else, other than the single version of 'Love Me Do', which was Andy White (brought in to do the session by George Martin before he knew Ringo was now in the band) is Ringo Starr.
Couldn't agree more, all the complexities of Ringo's drumming are very well placed on the little subtleties under his super tight beat, a superb and intelligent drummer.
@jazzNbluez I did my homework... Paul played on Back In The USSR and Dear Prudence (and The Ballad Of John And Yoko), that's all. That's hardly 'many of their hits'!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
See, I disagree. Ringo is a mediocre drummer. What really made him great though was that when he played you didn't hear Ringo Starr. You heard the Beatles. He was great for being able to lay back and play a beat without complicating it. That's why John decided to go with Ringo rather than Pete. It's even in one of John's Biographies.
I'm a percussionist myself. When the Beatles albums first came out on CD, I became aware of just what a fabulous drummer Ringo is. Vinyl never did him justice. McCartney is a sod for dissing Ringo like that (see firemanjohn's comment). Listen to the CDs (the original or the remastered. Does not matter), and hear for yourself.
@Drumguy1988 I totally agree....one of my favorite drummers, who so ever think any less, does not know what he or she is talking about. A lot of the drummer of today have learnt a lot from him.
Ringo is a music legend and Sheila one of the best female percussionists in the world. Funny though when Paul McCartney was asked if Ringo was one of the best drummers in the world, he said he wasn't even the best drummer in the band.
In later years Ringo admitted to playing impaired by drinking at times, and had some of his tracks filled in by studio drummers.
Those who criticize Ringo have never played, and cannot play the instrument. I can and know the little tricks that he pulled and how difficult some of them are. Examples; the samba beat on "I Feel Fine," the 16th note floor tom/snare fills on "Help," and half shuffle, half straight fours on "Long Tall Sally." I can name more, but real drummers are appreciative of Ringo, and he remains my favorite drummer of all time.
@vgr112261 Drumming is my hobby and I think I couldn't have developed my current style of drumming if I never heard Ringo's drumming on The Beatles. I am a huge Beatles fan. Though I get influences from other drummers like John Bonham, Ringo's always been my fave. I like his use of the floor tom a lot. I'm playing a floor tom right now. There are songs like Come Together, Oh! Darling, She Said She Said, A Day in the Life and Back Off Boogaloo where his drumming impresses me very very well.
Many people talking about Ringos "poor" technical skills and that Sheila could drum him down anytime. Oh, what a bore! Fact is: To be a good drummer you have to have both: technique AND style. But style is much more essential! Ringo and Sheila prove that so impressingly. So all you selfmade judges who propably can not hold two sticks the same time: STFU!!!!
@rocknrolljk - maybe it's just my little screen, but I can only see two stripes...if that's the case, it can't be adidas...maybe the london based ben sherman?
This is why Pete Best was fired. Ringo could keep time. VERY well. He's like a Swiss watch. He also is very understated when it comes to percussion.
When you consider the musical demands of the other three songwriters, it makes sense that RIngo was going to be the only drummer the Beatles could have had.
I hope U will check out the video for my song " RINGO ". It's a very retro video with Beatleish touches. It was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. The song and video is my attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
Looks like he's wearing an Adidas shell suit. 'Ay ay calm down, I ain't got your car stereo mate. But you can have these drums for 50 quid -they're sound as a pound just don't ask where I got them from though'
@baysidedan I am on 15 you fucking twat!! He rocks, you're just jealous because people are worshiping him and no because no one loves you so fuck off! RINGO ROCKS!
The assholes who shit on Ringo and his drumming style should do some research before making stupid ass statements...Ringo has a great feel...great groove..great time..and he plays the song...which is what a drummer is supposed to do!
Ringo inspired thousands to people to pick up the sticks and become drummers!!
I'm sure you nitwits know that Ringo..along with John Bonham were both elected into the percussive HOF......Ringo is GREAT at what he does....
@beatlejim64 Damn right!! Ringo to me will alway,s be 1 of the best ever i dare anybody to outgroove him, people have to understand that he is not a lead drummer like Bonham, Moon, Bill Ward or Ian Paice, but he went along with every change in music styles that the Beatles did,and did it very well, he will alway,s be my first influence as a drummer
@beatlejim64 well I think you don't have to do any research to reach that knowledge... if you just watch him play without being so narrow-minded as to think a good drummer needs to show his flawless technique and incredible fills, you'll see how rock solid his groove is, and how his creative playing matches the music perfectly.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If Pete Best still played with the Beatles would you call him the greatest drummer? I like Ringo, but I don't think he is the best, he is great, but I've seen people out do him. Anyone see Paul's current drummer? Between the 2 I know who I think is better.
They're good and all, I love Baker and Peart but Ringo's drumming just has so much soul. Noone can make me feels so strongly abou a song like he can. His drumming in A Day in The Life is amazing so powerful.
@TheWalrus192 what the hell you been smokin...i know, drummers that play white buckest living on the streets that have more rythym, feel for a song than Ringo the faker has. You probalby dont get out much do you?
To this day,my favourite straight no frills rock drummer of all times. The minimal kit,the touch, the feel, the best "sounding" rock drummer of em all,I listen to the Beatles to hear HIM.He even has the exact right personality for a drummer, fantasic understanding of rock and roll,a song drummer...brilliant
So many of the comments don´t make sense. He is Ringo STARR, he´s been a living legend most of his life and nonchalant about it. And its amazing than fifty years later he looks so good. Many of us won´t be so lucky or even able to play anything after those years.
excuse me? Ringo played for the Beatles.... who has your 5 year old son played for? oh yeah.... nobody (and in 20 years if he is playing with a band will they be as big as the Beatles?)

DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr While that little Ringo nifty-ism doesn't appear on any other song I can think of that is hardly "proof" that he didn't play on the track! Ringo played SONGS not merely patterns, which is why he was perfect for the Beatles, among other reasons. Besides, that drum lick you refer to is EASY to play. Drummers of far less skill of either Ringo or Purdie could play that beat. I can & I'm not a drummer!!! Ringo DID indeed quit for a few days and Paul played drums on "USSR" and "Prudence,"

DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr I wouldn't go as far as to say I personally care what you believe, but it does concern me that a knowledgeable drumming person would put forth this opinion, based on -- what? -- an assumption that Ringo was not capable of playing such a simple -- though -- clever lick. Beatles recordings are full unique drum beats and fills. Clapton and Jackie Lomax's contributions are documented if not in the liner notes, but this Purdie fantasy is groundless. Even HE doesn't make this claim.
mrtwang32 9 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@mrtwang32 I didn't know you were standing next to me when Purdie and I personally spoke.
DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr Thanks for finally providing the source of your allegation. YOU! Confirmed by the man who made a bit of a laughing stock of himself with claims that he played on the Beatles first three albums. It may be true he overdubbed over the PETE BEST tracks from the Tony Sheridan sessions for US release but his involvement with the Beatles ends there. Please listen to the fills on "Sadie": so very clearly Ringo.
mrtwang32 9 months ago

@mrtwang32 Now you need to get into the insults? I have not insulted you. I challenged you to find ANY song Ringo did with the band where he used that lick. As I said, "You can't". It was 1968, and for Ringo to have done that lick would have meant that he damn near invented it and all drummers that wanted to be funky copied this lick. That lick was NOT in Ringo's "tool box". But I bet Purdie played his drums on that tune to make the sound consistent with the rest of the project.

@mrtwang32 BTW, thanks for the compliment. We will obviously agree to disagree on this. No harm done. To debate it further would be a waste of time.
DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr No harm. I respect anyone who cares enough about the music and the players to pursue this sort of investigation. Purdie's involvement w the Tony Sheridan tapes and his claims of playing on the Beatles first 2 or 3 lps has been covered extensively on the web. You are the only person I have ever come across who puts him at EMI studios recording in Ringo's absence. Based on one minor yet effective drums pattern that to my ears is neither difficult to play nor very funky. Peace
mrtwang32 9 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@mrtwang32 I'm just saying to research WHEN drummers started playing this lick.
DrumTchr 9 months ago

This comment has received too many negative votes show
@Ishi680 The videos you cite have nothing to do with what I'm talking about.
DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr And just because nothing "exactly" like that was done on other Beatles songs doesn't mean that Ringo did not try something new at least once or it wasn't him playing and The Beatles also get influence from others. You are the only one I ever saw that made this claim on Sexy Sadie.
Ishi680 9 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@Ishi680 You certainly can believe anything you want.
DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr Yes, but but in your earlier posts, you seem to have a mistaken thought of Ringo not playing at Sexy Sadie and instead Purdie whilst most if not all drummers who are well familiar with Ringo's sound would agree that it was Ringo on that track because of the signature fills. Learning is in deed endless. Ringo learned a lot in his Beatle days and I have learned a lot from Ringo. Peace and love.
Ishi680 9 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@Ishi680 I stand by my statement that at least in those 8 measures I speak of... it was not Ringo playing. Those funky hi hat "barks" on the E of 4 was NOT Ringo's "signature" playing. If it WAS.... you would be able to show me where he has done it before. For something to be signature, it would have to be done many times over a period of time... not just once. Ringo was NOT a funky drummer. Musical, yes.... funky... no.
DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr Mate, on my first ever reply to you, I sent you links to songs where you might wanna fancy Ringo's use of the high hats with those. One was "Hello Goodbye" at 1:21-1:41 and "You Never Give Me Your Money" at 1:07-1:31 on the full song since I sent you a link with only the isolated drum part on YNGMYM and you might also wanna fancy his high hat work on Anna, In My Life, And Your Bird Can Sing. Those may not exactly be "funky" but there you got the similarities.
Ishi680 9 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@Ishi680 The only similarity is the fact that he opens and closes the hi hat.
DrumTchr 9 months ago
@DrumTchr
on cry baby cry he does it too.
Your assumption that Purdie played his parts because he stepped out of his
"signature" playing is absurd.
BobbyBobPeru 4 months ago
I'd like to see all you Ringo haters be allowed to join a very large popular band and have been admired by them for years before you joined like Ringo did. The Beatles admired Ringo who was in a band bigger than The Beatles were in the early .Ringo doesn't need fancy solos to prove he's a good drummer, drumming or playing any instrument is about making the song sound good. a wild solo in the middle of a quiet song like Hey Jude would be awful! Become more famous than him then you can judge

Ringo is a music legend and Sheila one of the best female percussionists in the world. Funny though when Paul McCartney was asked if Ringo was one of the best drummers in the world, he said he wasn't even the best drummer in the band.
In later years Ringo admitted to playing impaired by drinking at times, and had some of his tracks filled in by studio drummers.
firemanjohn 1 year ago
@firemanjohn I think it was John Lennon who made that rude joke that Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the band.

That's bullcrap. Lennon never said that. Urban legend, and McCartney has said many times that Ringo is the best drummer he's ever played with.
vgr112261 7 months ago
Those who criticize Ringo have never played, and cannot play the instrument. I can and know the little tricks that he pulled and how difficult some of them are. Examples; the samba beat on "I Feel Fine," the 16th note floor tom/snare fills on "Help," and half shuffle, half straight fours on "Long Tall Sally." I can name more, but real drummers are appreciative of Ringo, and he remains my favorite drummer of all time.
vgr112261 7 months ago
@vgr112261 Drumming is my hobby and I think I couldn't have developed my current style of drumming if I never heard Ringo's drumming on The Beatles. I am a huge Beatles fan. Though I get influences from other drummers like John Bonham, Ringo's always been my fave. I like his use of the floor tom a lot. I'm playing a floor tom right now. There are songs like Come Together, Oh! Darling, She Said She Said, A Day in the Life and Back Off Boogaloo where his drumming impresses me very very well.
Ishi680 7 months ago
Many people talking about Ringos "poor" technical skills and that Sheila could drum him down anytime. Oh, what a bore! Fact is: To be a good drummer you have to have both: technique AND style. But style is much more essential! Ringo and Sheila prove that so impressingly. So all you selfmade judges who propably can not hold two sticks the same time: STFU!!!!

The song and video is my attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
