I got a 2007 FWD with a 5 speed. I have put on 117,000 km's since new and the only problem I have had was a faulty oxygen sensor that was replaced under warranty at 55,000 km's. Most recently, the engine light has been coming off and on now for the past 2 months (car seems fine though) and just the other day the air bag light came on. I'm thinking thats because my girlfriend backed into my SX4 and maybe it triggered the airbag sensor somehow???
Hmm... the faulty oxygen sensor seems to be a problem common with Suzuki cars. My mom has a Suzuki Vitara from 2003 and she's had to replace the oxygen sensor three times.
I test drove a top of the line with Auto & except for being a little light on power really liked it. What turned me off was the 'B' pillar on the windows it is a terrible blind spot & is likely to cause a few pedestrian injuries when turning. Oh, & the sales manager was the worst I have ever seen. Remember when buying new you are tied into the dealer until your warranty runs out. In Canada our dealers are few & far between so a serious consideration.
I've got a Mazda Protege 5 (Probably better than the sx4 most of the time), but I'm still thinking about. Being able to lock in would be a good deal in ND. I'm tried of thinking I might get creamed every time I try to get going at a light.
I've got to go test drive it though... Might look for a used one the price of these things drop like a rock. I could sell my 2003 protege and almost buy a 2007 rx4.
keep the protege, bro. keep it until it dies. proteges are teh sexy. dont jump on the AWD band-wagon. after all the only two AWDs that make any difference are still the subaru's "symetric" and audi's quattro. look up the AWD test video.
I will keep the protege, but if I see a cheap sx4 I might grab it for winter driving. I did test drive one. It wasn't a lot different than my P5. It was just a little slower and taller. There was no spinning at the light though. Like mr3mk12 I didn't like the blind spots, but I think you would get used to it.
ND elects not to plow roads so everything turns into glazed ice the day after it snows and stays that way for weeks.
Softer winter tires for the protege would also help.
To be honest, I'd say the the SX4's electromagnetic AWD system is better than the quattro and Subaru's system. This is especially true when you take the fact that you can choose 4wd lock types into consideration.
I too am surprised that more young tuners aren't embracing it. IT is affordable, you can haul stuff in the back, it has a three mode AWD for snow and dirt, and offers great handling everyday, plus great gas mileage! Great car, and good review!
..and now with Suzuki using it as their platform for the WRC, more performance mods should be available for it, if from the JDM (overseas). Or from Europe as the Fiat Sedici.
If I had the money, I'd have one. I love the Mazda3, but they're a bit too high for my price range, and now (a mixed blessing) there's more of them on the road and less unique, something that wasn't the case for Mazdas ten years ago.
there is a tuning shop in cali that produces mods for SX4. there is a decent turbo kit out and legit lowering suspencion pieces. all-in-all very limited, but a good start non the less.
I just got my lisence recently (I'm 16) and I would LOVE one of these cars! although I don't think I would be tuning it. And you never see them around really. A great unique and practical car. :)
