The quality of the road surface I see nowadays is so much better than years gone by. I recall driving a lot around Poland from 91 onwards, a far cry to what the roads are like now. Usually two lanes were made from a single lane, keeping a close eye on the pedestrian and cyclists :-). Its good to see the improvements.

Yes, it is much better now. However there are still some very dodgy roads. I was on one yesterday.
