hi, i broke my clavicle bone 4 days ago.doctor said i dont need a surgery.i took painkillers several days and now pain is gone.at least it doesnt hurt much.however, there is a bump there.not big, and hardly noticeable.but i can feel it with my finger.is it possible that i might need a surgery even if doctor said that i dont? and can i already dome some stretching exercises of arm itself? btw im using sing.thanks in advance!
i fractured my clavicle about 6 months ago. The break looks close to the mans in this video, my doctor says i dont need surgery but i think otherwise. Will it ever be the same without surgery?
I did the same ORIF surgery 20 days ago and my doctor prohibited me from any shoulder movement above my head for a month! and this guy is doing therapy A DAY AFTER surgery!!!! what the hell?
I did the same ORIF surgery 20 days ago and my doctor prohibited me from any shoulder movement above my head for a month! and this guy is doing therapy A DAY AFTER surgery!!!! what the hell?
mine is the EXACT same way only on my left side, the doctor put me in a sling for a month and for some stupid reason told me no one does figure 8's anymore. its now been broken since october 15 2010 and i still havent had surgery. i have been calling and calling and my own doctor wont pick up for me. for all who care about their bones and health. DO NOT GET AN ARABIAN DOCTOR take the time to find an american doctor and things will be done right. take my advice
I broke mine almost 7 weeks ago and stayed in a recliner for 5 of them (no surgery). It did union thank god, but was a real pain in the ass. Didn't union perfectly, but seems to be holding up. Rehab starts in a week. Just wanted to say that this was sick!!! So glad I didn't have to do this. Thanks for the vid though.
I Broke my collar bone for about 1-2 months ago now, but it still hurts, when I'm making push-ups and stuff. Can you recommend an exercise where I can rebuild and train the collar bone fast and quickly? Oh, another question. Will the injury still be on me the rest of my life?
Hope you want to answer these questions.. Thanks (-;
i broke myn like 4-5 weeks ago and it feels like its going back into place but i can still feel the crack on it and i don't know if it's goring back right
Thank you Dr. Sanders, for putting my collar bone back together! You saved me big time!! Love the shirt Ed's wearing "Get it done right the first time!" How true. If you've got a badly broken collar bone, save yourself the time and pain, and just fly down to Houston and have Dr. Sanders fix it. Healing was much easier for me, at least, when the bone was lined up with a plate. Best thing I ever did. Thank you Dr. Mark!!!!! : )
Question: I broke my right collar bone and had surgery to plate it back together. I broke it playing baseball. I am a right handed pitcher and will the plate cause discomfort while pitching. Or will i even ever pitch again. And will pitching, cause the screws to come out because of all the stress i put on my arm? Any feedback would be wonderful. -Thank
@MrYakatori i would i broke mine in feb2009 had it pinned in aug09 after i re broke in may 09 it wouldnt connect very well. its not to late if they need to they might re break it then pin it im having the pin out in oct this year now im worried that it might make me worse in weakness and this my right best arm well was
Thanks for making this video and all the responses you are giving..... I'm suffering from clavicle problems of my own and wanted to ask you about it??? Right where the left clavicle meets the sternum area, there's a bulge....I got it through swimming...It was painful for the first two months but now it's more of an irritation... my question is should i keep seeing my physio coz my two doctors gave me painkillers (and that was it)..... Is it going to be like this for the rest of my life?
I broke my Clavicle about 6 weeks ago and it hasn't moved at all. Would you recommend surgery? If so, how long would the recovery time of the surgically fixed clavicle be?
Hello: I have just had another surgery for nonunion of my clavicle, with a bone graft. The first one did not fuse the clavicle together. I spent a year in ongoing discomfort and pain, I guess due to the space in between the break. My Doctor said I should return to work possibly after 8 weeks. Do you think that would be enough time? I have a sensitive and demanding job and although I do want to return, I do not want any further complications. Thank you...
I had the surgery on 3/16/10 and was able to lift my arm straight up in recovery. I went back to work on 3/18/10 using both arms as if nothing had happened (typing, using a mouse, among other things). It does have a tiny bit of awkwardness in the area but no pain. On doctors orders, Im not to lift anything with the arm until released to do so. Overall, I think the surgery went well. I follow up in a couple of weeks to find out for sure!
Yeah don't force it. I had 3 separate breaks and it took about 6 weeks until I could lift my arm above my head. After about 3 months you should be totally fine
If he had gotten the surgery right away he wouldn't have needed rehab. I broke my collarbone in three places, had surgery 5 days later where a stainless steel plate and 6 screws were put in. After a week i had almost full range of motion and at 4 weeks was about 95% better. Now I'm getting it removed in a month. Its been 3 months since i broke it
i broke my humerus 3 months ago on a motorcycle accident, external fixation was placed because it was a compound fracture, after 6 weeks they removed the fixation and gave me a fiberglass cast, my bone is not healed since the accident, i have another surgery scheduled on Wednesday for bone graft and internal fixation. i also have a wrist drop (radial nerve damaged) its still not recovering. will i recover with my wrist drop after my bone heals?
while the xray show union developing I'm suffering greater pain then the break or the surgery in my trapezoid near the ac join. close enough to where the pin was drilled through. I have been injected with steroid which was mixed with local. this gave me instant relief for a short while.
What would you suggest is happening? and will it get better without another surgery?
I was told that the pin will never be removed? it has been three days since the steroid injection and I'm starting to feel some relief. I think it must have been muscle damage "collateral" from surgery. why would they choose to leave the pin in place for the rest of my life? what are the pro's and cons to this decision?
Well to update this; the fracture site degenerated badly and i have non-union. the pin has also worn through the bone breaching slightly out of the bone closer to my neck. this is causing pain and i've been offered two choices. remove the pin and leave it or have it plated and bone grafts used to help union. I'm having a ct scan to determine if there is enough scar tissue to hold the bone in place when the pin is removed. I'm not interested in more metal...
@sandersclinic i also have a qestion i have broke my collarbone about a month and half ago. its fused but in a shape like this ^ but not that extreme. im 17 year old young guy and now i often get lots of shoulder/neck pain i have also noticed that the side i broke it on is fairly level with the non broken side but the side i broke it on is now a bit shorter in length. My doctor says no surgery so far, he said being young as i am the bone should heal more stright over time, is this true.thax
Evidenced based medicine has shown us that pin fixation of clavicle fracture carries a high rate of nonunion and other complications.
For example, the other clavicle fracture patient shown on this website initally had Rockwood pin fixation, had the pin removed, and promptly displaced his fracture.
Pins have also been reported to have broken, and migrated into the region of the heart and great vessels. Some deaths have been reported.
and it didnt even hurt lol i thourght i just torn a muscle or something playing rugby league and with in 3-4 weeks it was gudd but my right colla bone is really thick now this happend like 6 weeks ago and im loking at surgury they will have to re break it and yeh lol
i broke my left collar bone on a skateboard and the sayed it was the worst thay hav seen because it didnt spread apart it came off and slid down under where it broke and i didnt hav surgery do you think i should wrestle
yo ..if i get an opetation ...what will it look like after? eny scars or wil the bone be eny bigger or something ..will it l;ook like the othere one ??????????????????????????????
Hey, i broke my left collarbone a week ago, fell off a bike in central park, i do have a bump, its broken in about a 20 to 30 degree angle, but still intact. the doc said i was fine and didnt even need my sling, right away he told me to take the sling off, but yet it feels like it pops in and out and makes cracking sounds and hurts, cant even let my arm hang!! should i stay with the sling?
The lump is the apex of the crooked bone. Assuming someone competent does the sugery, the bone will be straight and not angled, so the bump will be gone.
But the surgery is not done for only cosemtic resons. The function of the shoulder with a straight clavicle is better, expecially for athletes.
im 12 years old and i broke my collar bone skating down a hill with loose trucks, damn speed wobbles, anyway all they did was put me in a cast and say let it heal on its own
I have a fractured clavicle, on my right shoulder, which is my dominant arm. I've seen two doctors neither recommended it, nor incident i don't get it. Saying it was up to me, I've read a lot of forums most leaning towards surgery, and i don't quite know what to do.
i have a separated clavicle at the shoulder humerus joint, or something like that. Can it be fix and will i have full range of motion or would it be reduce because of the screws i been told this by my therapist he himself has a broken clavicle and refuses to get operated because he feels he will loose range of motion in other words he won't be able to lift his arms over his head. any advice doc?
First and foremost, you should visit a doctor in person about your pain if it is a problem. Back pain, however, is not generally associated with clavicle fractures.

There is no problem repairing a clavicle fracture at two weeks. Finding a competent person with experience with these problems is not so easy though.

dr3w79 2 years ago
Clearly, the pin is irritating the soft tissues around the shoulder. Hopefully the fracture will unite soon and you can have the pin removed.
I have seen this problem a few times before, and don't intall these pins.

I think that this issue that you will have trouble with the pin has all ready declared itself.
I would take it out as soon as fracture union was established. Period.
