  • 4:36 The Atomic Clock at work

  • Alien is one of the heaviest fucking albums ever conceived, I shit you not. SYL forever!

  • this album spoiled my ear pussies. anything he does spoils my ear pussies. i hate everything else

  • his beaters look like little apples

  • @schwarg totes

  • "we'll fix it in the mix"

oh god how I hate those words :P

  • Devin still produces , in my opinion, one of the most crushing guitar tones ever.

  • Gene is right. He is a machine. I can't wait to see him play with Testament next month!

  • They're so humble.

  • @shays860 lol espeially gene

  • I was going to meet Devin once, he's apparently an awesome dude, but he was busy healing the sick and blind with his music.

  • I got to meet devin one, hes one of the nicest guys ive meet, he cooked me some eggs n bacon

  • i got to meet devin once, hes one of the nicest guys ive meet, he let me arm wrestle him

  • How much you wanna bet the wife convinced him to shave the skullet?

  • @MrMastershake2001 either the wife or sobriety

  • Respond to this video... Damn i wish he kept that hair..

  • Skeksis is the best song in the world. hands down.

  • 1:45 the most important piece of studio equiptment right there

  • Devy looks blazed as hell xD

  • @9Metalhead5 Your friend should sit on a big back cock then.

  • we ride - so full of win.

  • 0:33 van halen - balance. One of the greatest heavy metal albums. Oh yeah, Alien fucking rocks ass !

  • LOL at Townsend laughing at the tape room. Zao recorded Fear with Steve Albini in one of those and the album just killed it.

  • Top ten best metal albums ever!!!!

  • @9Metalhead5 solution : get better friends

  • This has to be one of the best albums I've ever heard

  • This album is like how the fat lady sings.

  • Every time I listen to this ablum, I end up physically and emotionally exhausted

  • Gene is awesome!!! had an in depth coversation the man!! he was on the level!!

  • Getting pumped for "Deconstruction", but it'll never compare to Alien. I think Alien might be a concept album about sex, relationships, and having children. Read the lyrics to any one song, and you'll get at least one of those three themes in a song, if not all three.

  • @Bassbait Two weeks, posessions, and uh....love?

  • @Wabaanimkii Yep. Also, Shitstorm with the lyrics "Sleep little baby, don't you cry", and "Ladies, all this time I thought you wanted me to be like you", and in Skeksis there's the whole "form relates to war relates to sex", which is interesting because the ending lyrics of the song is "F**ing fight!", as he had just related war to sex. Also, We Ride, with EVERY SINGLE LYRIC, and with Thalamus, with the lyrics like "I'm master and commander... of my fate, of my faith in us". MANY references.

  • badass

  • Gene isn't as cocky as you guys think, they're all pretty down to earth.

My favorite song is info dump.....

  • @Wabaanimkii I thought I was the only one who thought that track was amazing....you have to be in the right mood to listen to it though

  • @Gary190tube It was intended as a joke, buy I have actually listened to the whole song at least 5 times.

  • I guess amazing the entire metal community wasn't enough, He had to amaze his band mate to.

  • How the fuck is that drummer still fat?

  • @megaterra69 food and booze dude. It'll do it to anyone.

  • The best SYL album of all of them. The first I heard and it blew my mind. I was like, "WTF?"

  • I love how all great artists record their albums baked as fuck!!

  • @AttilatheThrilla well thats not at all true. While the community of music may include many who do use drugs, most of the elites dont. Even devin townsend himself has given up booze and drugs. realising it was making him paranoid and effecting his life in negative ways.

  • Gene is a fuckin god on the drums \m/ that dude should be WAY more recognised coz the guy shits on pretty much ALL of the "big famous names" \m/

  • gene hoglan seems like a cocky asshole but hes allowed to be and i guess he has to be

  • Has Gene Hoglan ever been slim? XD

  • @BeardedDanishViking i want to see him run. i think he'd be fuckin speedy...

  • Gene isnt cocky he's right...

  • Anybody who refers to Gene Hoglan as "the drummer" has no business watching this video and should go back to listening to Nickelback. And Gene isn't being full of himself, he's simply verbalizing his intentions that every musician has, to be the best and to blow people away. LONG LIVE STRAPPING!!!!!!!!!

  • If only they hadn't compressed the shit out of it during mastering....

I wish they would do the musicians justice by matching a great performance with a great production.

    Still a lovely album though.

  • @HaRv3sT3RoFsOrRoW I'd like to see him nut stomp you, you piece of shit.

  • @MrMetalCookie haha... funny.. fanboy... there are many drummers that are alot better... this guy is way too cocky...

  • @HaRv3sT3RoFsOrRoW He's just as important as any other player in this band. I'm not a fanboy, I just hate it when people exclude others from the band, and get mad because they're speaking their mind.

  • @MrMetalCookie im not exxcluding him... what im trying to say, is hes really cocky. none of the other guys in SYL are like that... and no, i wasnt mad, im just stating the obvious, if he were to get kicked in the dick, he wouldnt be as COCKY... hehe i made a funny :D

  • @HaRv3sT3RoFsOrRoW Well, Him and Townsend were the original writers of this album.

  • @MrMetalCookie yeah? and townsend isnt cocky.

  • @HaRv3sT3RoFsOrRoW You know, this whole argument seems pretty stupid now. Lets just let it go.

  • Gene seems really full of himself.

  • @jek21 Rightfully though? He has some amazing technique. Sure, he's not the fastest ever but he has alot of original shit.

  • "nobody in their right mind uses that shit anymore" They should. Digital audio is garbage.

  • @jek21

No it isn't. It's been made garbage by the obssession with convenience.

Get yourself a good sound system running a good album running a DSD format (SACD), and digital fucking rocks.

  • Devin in the studio where Van Halen once recorded and playing Eddies Music Man. Nice.

  • Comment removed

  • i got to meet gene once, hes one of the nicest guys ive meet, and he offered me vodka

  • @mechajesus5000 You are one of the nicest guys ive ever met. I love you sweetie.

  • @mechajesus5000 Devin and Gene are fucking geniuses on their instruments but they're so down to earth. It's crazy.

  • @mechajesus5000 We just greeted eachother with "\,,/". Real nice.

  • This album shattered my soul into a thousand little pieces.

  • @telemov

    and duct-taped it back together

  • Devin Smoking out of a bong classic. =)

  • @Ecscape18 its because he played in the best band ever formed death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That Is Fucking Wicked!

  • 07:26 ... JUST LOVE IT !

  • Devin Townsend looks like Jonathan Davis in about 20 more yrs

  • Crimson!

  • Shine kicks major ass!

  • 4:37

    Truffle Shuffle :D

  • what is the song playing at the very start of the video??? that riff sounds HUUUUUUUGE

  • @thecbear69 Strapping Young Lad - Love

  • I never realised what Devins tattoo actually was until 4:44

    Hehe kitty.

  • Gene Hoglan and his tent of DOOM!

  • Devins= brilliant..Gene Hoglan is a drumming god

  • this album is fucking HEAVY! My favorite song is Shine...its...just...Massive

  • @MetallicOpeth you have great tatse. Shine is also my favorite.

  • @morbidanjel44 shine is probably THE most intense peice of music I have ever heard, and that's not over-exagerating, you can just hear the pure chaos running through these crazy canadian fuckers viens when you thrash this track out

  • @MitchMcMetal true that man, pure chaos is the perfect way to describe it

  • @MitchMcMetal i think i played that song like 100 times the first time i heard it. funny thing, SYL as a whole took awhile to grow one me. then I listened to Devin Townsend Band. so I went back and listened to their stuff again, and I was like why in the hell did i not realize how kickass these guys were before? i'm still kicking myself in the ass for never seeing them live.

  • @MetallicOpeth we ride, shitstorm, possesions, and detox are beast too

  • those looks like peach pits for his kick beaters...

  • 4:56 Is he playing 1312??

  • 'That strip that you're not meant to make go red'

    A pregnancy test?

  • genius.

  • i love the dry sound of love in the beginning of the video 0:01 It would be cool with a dry version of the album.

  • @Ecscape18 he uses ankleweights that actually help him to play faster lol

  • Drumming in DMs. KICKASS.

    ps. Devin, fucking, rocks.

  • 4;36 - 4;43, I could loop that for 10 minutes it makes me piss HAHA

ALIEN IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUMS YES YES!

  • Devin is about to hit up that boooooong

  • To the guy who said he lost respect for devin. You should try singing live in a metal band when you cant hear anything, its near impossible, a soundguy/venue can destroy the set of an amazing artist like this. Having a click track, may be very important if the band is using prerecorded samples live, which im pretty sure devin does.

on topic, this album was amazing.

  • 4:00 nice shirt.

  • I've never seen anyone use an SM7 on a hi hat before... anyone else find this weird?

  • @NoVanity1 not really. If its very close, you can use whatever you want. Overheads you can get picky on, but cymbal hits are high-freqs and tend to be mixed waaay down anyway.

  • @NoVanity1

That's what I use on a hi-hat pretty much all the time.

S'pose it comes down to whatever sound you prefer really.

  • Is that a bong Devin is holding at the end ?

  • @RICKYFALL Yup, Bryan was cleaning it earlier in the vid (1:41-1:148)

  • I though this was a joe satriani documentary.... :(

  • Gene is basically saying "I fucking rule at drums"

  • @Maggotdevil55 That is because he does fucking rule at drums!!

  • @Maggotdevil55 Yeah. Which he does.

  • man!! gene is one fat mutha fucker!! damn he can play!! im glad hes team up with dino now.. another awesome fat mutha fucker!!

  • Wow Gene Hogland is really fat, amazing that he can be that quick. Awesome, awesome drummer.

  • "i don't even give a shit if you don't like it, fuck you if you don't" -bow-

  • @Ecscape18 He's the real life version of Pickles, he has to be damn good.

  • So you lost respect for Devin Townsend and Gene Hoglan because one wanted to hear his own voice so he could actually sing the decent set his fans paid for and because the other didn't want to play out of time and ruin things for the ENTIRE BAND. Yeah, a good drummer can play without a metronome. But, an incredible drummer playing some of the most technical beats in heavy music today, yesterday and probably for a few tomorrows might want a guide to keep it steady live. Wake up bro.

  • I used to have respect for this guy, but then he cut BTBAM set list short in Houston! He spent like 45 min on stage before he played just because he couldn't hear his own voice in his headphones and his DRUMMER didn't have CLICK TRACK. Last I checked a good drummer can keep tempo without a damn metronome

  • @juggalopenguin1134 they have programmed synth. they have to have a click.

  • @floydian961 well i guess that makes sense. It just really sucked to see the guy stand up there saying "oh my click track is back!, but I can't hear the vocals....Oh i can hear the vocals! but now the click is gone!" for literally 45 min. i guess if anyone is to blame it's the venue. but still BTBAM's set was cut shorter :(

  • @juggalopenguin1134 Personally I thought an hour and forty minutes was plenty of time for BTBAM to play at the concert I attended. Devin, on the other hand, was given a brief six track set, and their mix sounded ten times better.

  • @juggalopenguin1134 the DTP show was done to a click because there were backing tracks that they were playing to. And anyone who gives half a shit about how they sound is going to want to hear their vocals onstage. Blame the venue, they should have that shit taken care of faster than 45 minutes. Not the band's fault.

  • @cactusfarm true, true... but imo his music was balls gay..which made me even more mad because after all that waiting, literally more than half the venue walked out to the patio because it wasn't even worth the wait

  • @cactusfarm but yes you are right it's the venue's fault. which is reasonable b/c i hate the meridian

  • @Ecscape18 he practices with weights on his legs too!

  • He looks super creepy but hes such a humble guy

  • I met devin townsend at a signing, he signed my legend of zelda and crossed out zelda and wrote ziltoid. THEN! came and hung out with around 10 of us at a park in boronia. I talked with him about syl and his newest coming album deconstruction and he shed some light of life and love ect. HE IS AWSOME!!!!

  • @VolatusSomnium The Legend of Ziltoid!

  • @VolatusSomnium You have no idea how much I envy you.

  • christina's hot

  • Devin doesn't make you want to put the guitar down like Vai or Petrucci might, Devin makes you stop in your tracks (pun intended) and rethink how you thought music and a song is constructed... or deconstructed... like a cheeseburger!!

  • @TheTrevasaurusRex mmm... cheeseburgers.

  • Devin is so ahead of his time, ahead of all of us. Makes me sad how brilliant he is. Ha!

    Fucking genius!

  • tattoo @ 4:44. Hilarious.

  • Dude.

His guitar is signed by Eddie Van Halen.

    Dude.

  • 9.20 -9.30 !!!!!!!!!!!!! devin 's rules!!!!

  • My 12th favourite album of all time.

  • This album hit me like a sledgehammer the first time I heard it. It's a few years later now and I have yet to see it's equal. I love Devin's solo work too, but for sheer intensity, SYL and Alien in particular, are the very pinnacle.

  • @NWBHLVideo You my freind, are awsome.

  • !!!!!BONGGGG!!!!!!

  • this changed my life

  • What song is that that is playing in the background?

  • at the start its strapping young lads love

  • "Shine"

  • I like how Gene isn't being super bullshit humble, but he also doesn't come off as a dick.

  • Gene "Human Drum Machine" Hoglan

  • nice bong from dave....gene is the man

  • POISON!? LMFAO

  • I miss this band.

  • Comment removed

  • Incredible album.

  • Actually, he said that it's easier to play with Dr Martens, because the weight pulls his feet down and he saves some stamina, and has more accuracy at the same time. But well, he's a God anyway, so never mind that. :)

  • playing a 6 string and then moveing to a 7 string like devin is just like wtf its a diffrent instrament in its self but its soo much fun

  • depends on what tuning youre playing. I play drop A on my 7-string. which really isnt hard to get used to considering its standard tuning with a low A. but if youre going from standard or any 6-string tuning for that matter to something like what dev plays (open C major with a low G) then yes its a bit of a transition. for the record though, he plays open B now.

  • I really like the "new" Devin more than the old one seeing these videos.

  • @lemmykill Yeah, old Devin was a lot more mellow and probably stoned lol.

  • Can anyone name all of those drum mics? I know the kick drum mic but not the others. I really want to know!

  • ok from 3:08 the first one is a shure beta 52, then the next one up is actually just a speaker taped to a stand (used for kick drum, similar to the yamaha "sub kick" just ghetto style) next up to the right is a Sennheiser 421 then just above to the left of that is the shure sm57 then above that to the left is a Shure sm7b to the right of that and pretty much the other 3 behind it are all sennheiser 421's. they are probably each going onto a seperate tom. i didnt see the overhead mics though :\

  • wait i correct myself, the very first mic is a AKG d112, not a shure beta 52. Sorry!

  • I remember one was Larry and Mike and Phill and I think Jackson... oh and James.

  • HUMAN DRUM MACHINE!!!!

  • @Acid4Blood as he sed it, i scrolled down to read the comments. excellent!

  • good to see Gene & Byron now in Fear Factory, I hope maybe Devin does a song with em for their new album lol, any mixture of SYL and FF though is killer

  • just imagine the density of the bong haze in that studio :))

  • Gene is being sarcastic as fuck...but his cockiness is definetly well founded man... when another dude would be able to play like him...they can be cocky too...until then... GENE IS THE GOD... others are shittoffees

  • In my opinion all of syl deserve to be a little cocky they ARE METAL GODS! gene for best drummer ever!

  • Where is this from? I neeeeeed it.

  • gene is the man on drums.....just pour some gravy on him and he is ready to tear that shit up

  • Genes alittle cocky... thats one thing i dont like about this but he is a goo drummer no doubt.

  • "This is slammin' stuff:

    agreed

    I fucking love Alien

  • LMAO @ 2:25 - 2:32 I love devin and SYL

  • does anyone know what song jed is recording At 4:52? could never find what the part is in.

  • i love it, stoner metal head canadians PERFECT BAND

  • Oh my god... it's going to fucking kill Jesus! 1:05

  • Devin was massively stoned during this record.

It's one of the reasons he just had to discontinue Strapping.

  • He also stopped taking the medication for his bipolar disease/syndrome/what.
