Getting pumped for "Deconstruction", but it'll never compare to Alien. I think Alien might be a concept album about sex, relationships, and having children. Read the lyrics to any one song, and you'll get at least one of those three themes in a song, if not all three.
@Wabaanimkii Yep. Also, Shitstorm with the lyrics "Sleep little baby, don't you cry", and "Ladies, all this time I thought you wanted me to be like you", and in Skeksis there's the whole "form relates to war relates to sex", which is interesting because the ending lyrics of the song is "F**ing fight!", as he had just related war to sex. Also, We Ride, with EVERY SINGLE LYRIC, and with Thalamus, with the lyrics like "I'm master and commander... of my fate, of my faith in us". MANY references.
@AttilatheThrilla well thats not at all true. While the community of music may include many who do use drugs, most of the elites dont. Even devin townsend himself has given up booze and drugs. realising it was making him paranoid and effecting his life in negative ways.
Anybody who refers to Gene Hoglan as "the drummer" has no business watching this video and should go back to listening to Nickelback. And Gene isn't being full of himself, he's simply verbalizing his intentions that every musician has, to be the best and to blow people away. LONG LIVE STRAPPING!!!!!!!!!
@HaRv3sT3RoFsOrRoW He's just as important as any other player in this band. I'm not a fanboy, I just hate it when people exclude others from the band, and get mad because they're speaking their mind.
@MrMetalCookie im not exxcluding him... what im trying to say, is hes really cocky. none of the other guys in SYL are like that... and no, i wasnt mad, im just stating the obvious, if he were to get kicked in the dick, he wouldnt be as COCKY... hehe i made a funny :D
@morbidanjel44 shine is probably THE most intense peice of music I have ever heard, and that's not over-exagerating, you can just hear the pure chaos running through these crazy canadian fuckers viens when you thrash this track out
@MitchMcMetal i think i played that song like 100 times the first time i heard it. funny thing, SYL as a whole took awhile to grow one me. then I listened to Devin Townsend Band. so I went back and listened to their stuff again, and I was like why in the hell did i not realize how kickass these guys were before? i'm still kicking myself in the ass for never seeing them live.
To the guy who said he lost respect for devin. You should try singing live in a metal band when you cant hear anything, its near impossible, a soundguy/venue can destroy the set of an amazing artist like this. Having a click track, may be very important if the band is using prerecorded samples live, which im pretty sure devin does.
@NoVanity1 not really. If its very close, you can use whatever you want. Overheads you can get picky on, but cymbal hits are high-freqs and tend to be mixed waaay down anyway.
So you lost respect for Devin Townsend and Gene Hoglan because one wanted to hear his own voice so he could actually sing the decent set his fans paid for and because the other didn't want to play out of time and ruin things for the ENTIRE BAND. Yeah, a good drummer can play without a metronome. But, an incredible drummer playing some of the most technical beats in heavy music today, yesterday and probably for a few tomorrows might want a guide to keep it steady live. Wake up bro.
I used to have respect for this guy, but then he cut BTBAM set list short in Houston! He spent like 45 min on stage before he played just because he couldn't hear his own voice in his headphones and his DRUMMER didn't have CLICK TRACK. Last I checked a good drummer can keep tempo without a damn metronome
@floydian961 well i guess that makes sense. It just really sucked to see the guy stand up there saying "oh my click track is back!, but I can't hear the vocals....Oh i can hear the vocals! but now the click is gone!" for literally 45 min. i guess if anyone is to blame it's the venue. but still BTBAM's set was cut shorter :(
@juggalopenguin1134 Personally I thought an hour and forty minutes was plenty of time for BTBAM to play at the concert I attended. Devin, on the other hand, was given a brief six track set, and their mix sounded ten times better.
@juggalopenguin1134 the DTP show was done to a click because there were backing tracks that they were playing to. And anyone who gives half a shit about how they sound is going to want to hear their vocals onstage. Blame the venue, they should have that shit taken care of faster than 45 minutes. Not the band's fault.
@cactusfarm true, true... but imo his music was balls gay..which made me even more mad because after all that waiting, literally more than half the venue walked out to the patio because it wasn't even worth the wait
I met devin townsend at a signing, he signed my legend of zelda and crossed out zelda and wrote ziltoid. THEN! came and hung out with around 10 of us at a park in boronia. I talked with him about syl and his newest coming album deconstruction and he shed some light of life and love ect. HE IS AWSOME!!!!
Devin doesn't make you want to put the guitar down like Vai or Petrucci might, Devin makes you stop in your tracks (pun intended) and rethink how you thought music and a song is constructed... or deconstructed... like a cheeseburger!!
This album hit me like a sledgehammer the first time I heard it. It's a few years later now and I have yet to see it's equal. I love Devin's solo work too, but for sheer intensity, SYL and Alien in particular, are the very pinnacle.
Actually, he said that it's easier to play with Dr Martens, because the weight pulls his feet down and he saves some stamina, and has more accuracy at the same time. But well, he's a God anyway, so never mind that. :)
