1/2 of the guys that play busy fill-ins today don't realize Tommy Aldridge was doing it back in 1985 ... in many cases better than these guys are doing it TODAY.
@stillphil 1985? He was doing this kind of stuff in the early and mid 70's! Very revolutionary double bass, polyrhythm drummer and probably the most entertaining, mesmerizing drummer I've ever seen and I've seen many of the good ones.
He's a madman no doubt - the comments of myoluser and ariesram74 do seem to apply here. Thing is, he can play a groove when he wants to - check out Pat Travers tune ''crash and burn" or the live version of "boom boom out go the lights" also with Pat T. His double bass shuffle and fills are pretty crazy on that one. His double bass instruction video is quite something also - his deal is that fast kinda reverse 5 stroke roll between the snare and feet. Three on feet then two on snare.
someone says ludwig are better yamaha.! that guy has never owned a set a of yamaha. I have 2 kits from both companys. yamaha is far superior. even owned a set of vistalite. go play some birch custom absolute nouveau and report back. ludwig hasn't made killer!!! drums in 2 decades.
He is a very good drummer. But Bonham used a single speedKing pedal single Bass (which most drummers can barely pull off Bonhams beats with double pedals!) By the way, Tommy Aldridge starts his solo by using open hand Bonham triplets. Bonham made his Vista Light 5 piece sound like a 10 piece. But, none the less, imitation is the best form of flattery. Kudos to Tommy Aldridge.
Yeah it's funny. He just does the same fast beats over and over for 6 minutes. Don't get me wrong he's an excellent drummer, just probably...uh, "in the zone". ; )
It doesnt matter " who was the first" Tommy was the best"...seeing him third row, just blew me away! I have seen Led Zepplin with Bonham....Carr, also. Aldridge is the all time best!, no doubt about it! Just look at him and his talent, come on...?
endless creativity from single strokes and relatively simple licks, but played beautifully, with energy. i love it. makes me want to get playin again!
love his feel, so juicy. kinda like that feeling you get when you're a bit spaced out and you imagine imaginary objects larger than they are in front of you moving as if they're being manipulated remotely from your imagination in a dream like state man
Excellent drummer for sure. It's amazing to me the added dimension one more bass drum pedal gives you. Wishing I never sold my damn Tama RockStar Double Bass Kit.
This was the first I saw of Tommy, 1987-1988 with Whitesnake. He was going 15 years before that and 20 later today! Tommy Aldridge is a Living Legend.
He's a great drummer, but all his solo's sound the same. I would love to hear him put something into a beat then solo along with the beat. It just makes for a better and more dynamic solo. Like Vinnie Colaiuta does. Now Vinnie is a true master.
@patrickforpresident....you know what a lot of badass jazz masters lack...the same thing that a lot of guitar virturosos lack...the balls of letting it rock...hence a rock drummer...countless times i've heard recodings of a master(most often a jazz) drummer play absurd things and sound like a douche when trying to lay down a heavy groove or just a hammered out rock beat....and I have had the pleasure of seeing Tommy a few times and it was amazing but I agree with you to a certain degree..
To all you young cats out there. This guy has been around since the early 70's. One of the first to get the maximum potential from a double bass drum setup. As far as i'm concerned he's still the master of the double bass drums. Check him out on Pat Travers Live Album, Go For What You Know, recorded in 1979.
@RickHubbard1954 you need to check out some Louie Bellson double bass work from the 50's. Louie Bellson was the first to use double bass in the late 40's using Gretch Drums.
can anybody tell me what heads he's using in this vid? he says himself he uses remo emperors on his toms now but i'm not sure if he did back then, i have no idea. anybody?
Tommy uses smaller drums now and smaller kicks. Today he'll go 12, 14, 16, 18 with 22" kicks not the 24" kicks. He'll even go 10, 12, 14, 16 toms in the studio.
Toms are 14" 15" 16" 18" on that kit in 1988-1989. Read the Modern Drummer article. Watch the clip at 1:00 and you'll notice that the first tom is the size of the 14" snare.
He may not be the first, but he still did a good job. It's like saying Metallica is better than every other thrash band (or whatever you want to call it) because they were the ones who "finalized the sound". I don't know, thats what i think.
@Led757 yea Morello was playing with his hands back in the late 50's & early 60's. Great old time drummer. Look at Bellson too. Louie Bellson was the first to play a double bass set back in 1950
Bonham was only 2 years older than Tommy Aldridge... both playing drums at the same time. They were both doing lots of similar things at the same time.
Tommy Aldridge is one of my favorite Rock Drummers of all time. He's AMAZING! This is 1987-1988 and I remember that red Yamaha kit from the Whitesnake tour. Toms are 14, 15, 16, 18 and Kicks are 24s. HUGE drums. A W E S O M E! Go Tommoy Go.
After his hands on approach on the drums he should scream (like Beatles Ringo Starr after the song 'Helter Skelter') "I've got blisters on my fingers!!!"
Most of Tommy's sound in this vid is coming from his double kicks, not what he's playing on the toms and snare. As I said before, Tommy's a great drummer but IMO he doesn't have the power intensity that Bonham had, and certainly not specifically playing with his hands.
