this song is about not fitting in. and about h.p. lovecraft but it is not directly about him

h.p. lovecraft lived in brooklyn for awhile and during that time he faced alot of hardships and problems. he hated brooklyn life. the song is using h.p. lovecraft as a reference to not fitting in. it fits perfect an amazing song that uses one of the greatest minds ever as a reference.

yeah you've got it for the most part, i find it's more about alienation as lovecraft was a huge racist and was disgusted and terrified by the melting pot that is brookyln which is a metaphor for being terrified and disgusted by people in general, john darnielle is a genius.
