come on, pipa is almost the most difficult instrument in China. you never learn it, how do you know.maybe it looks similar to guitar but i can say pipa is thousands times harder that guitar. plus all things in the world cant satisfy all people.you have your right to like or hate it.but you dont need to force other people to agree with you.ok?
itmusic you all fcing suck, cacalacapoo is right, the music differneces, and you itmusic shit-oos are just whining about pain and ballbalab just whining, this is a nice culture music better than your shit ass music so better shut the fuck up and listen to this beautifel music asshole!
Thank you very much, I will definitely visit Master Wang and select a similar pipa personally when I go to Beijing next year.
In my opinion 吳玉霞 is currently the top pipa player of the world and I wish one day she could tour Sydney or do a solo concert here. If you are her friend/fan in Beijing, please convey my best regards to her. Thank You.
My father is a musician at Pipa. He tried to teach me the art when I was very young, but we failed. I learned to play piano finally, which may be more popular now. I still remember he used verses from Pipa Xing to teach me the feeling of the sound. Now he is still teaching Pipa after retiring. It is really a pity that I don't follow my father's way of art. I hope more effort is put into our tradition. Thanks for the post also thanks the artist for composing this piece.
Apparently people are pissed at you for your fake Charlie Parker video but I don't care and think you've more than made up for it with this awesome clip. I once took a boat ride across the Potomac and took the metro to Georgetown, I came up the escalator to this strange music and it was a man playing this instrument as the sun set....great memory
i think the difference between western and eastern music is due to its orgination from two very different cultures. different cultures would of course produce different kinds of instruments and music. i think the best tt listeners can do is to appreciate what each performance has to offer - the uniqueness of both the instrument and the composition.
I find the music comes from the musician not the instrument. That being said even drums can be romantic, it depends on who´s playing and the listener. The percussive percussive element on the Pipa does not deter from it´s softness.
The aim of Chinese music is different to Western music. Chinese music is more internally focused, unlike Western music which is more audience focused.
That's not necessarily true. It's true that the sound of the instrument is a much harsher sound and might not be the most appropriate for romantics moments, or it might just need a composition that can use it's great power of variations to properly express the feelings that needs to be driven out. I guess it also depends on the volume.. light playing may give an exotic touch that one might consider really romantic and calm.
In western movies we often see a gentlement playing his guitar proposing to his girl friend. One can hardly imagine the same happens to Pipa. Same to Erhu, celebriting your wife's birthday in a hotel restaurant with violinist playing next to your table is romantic. One can hardly imagine the same can happen to Erhu, Gaohu. If it is Dizi, people in the restaurant may all run away.
The composition is good attempt. Traditional Chinese musicical instructments are needing more good musical composition to keep it going. In particular, Pipa is always described by most people as "Ancient" instrument. In all Pipa concerts, we always hear the same few pieces of work. Is Pipa is just so limited. Performers of Pipa on the stage, unlike those playing guitar, they look so releasing while playing, are playing like doing a exhausting sport.
"Pipa is just so limited..." Well the same occured with the guitar at the dawn of 20th century. The repertoire was limited. It wasn´t considred seriously by "classic" musicians and listeners. The pipa has big possibilities, I see. The least consideration is that the pipa is not "audience oriented", so what?
Pipa is not limited, because of your ignorance, you think it is. Chinese music differs from western, passionate playing manifests itself differently in the two.
There are still a few guitars around that price playable, but pipa never. It is true, try shop around, but perhaps not in countries of high living standard.
It seems that you are good at both pipa and guitar. Excellent !
bollocks man! i dont know bout the pipa, but you can definitely jam on a cheap guitar. i've seen it, i've done it, its still fun and sounds good enough. dont be such a music snob!
@cacalacapoo The sad fact is: pipa is listened by only a very small group of people in China. Most musical instrument stores in China do not sell Pipa.
@cacalacapoo That depends. My first (and only) acoustic guitar was just over $110 US dollars. But I'm a full-bodied male, and this guitar will last for a bit.
If you want something for your 8 year old daughter, you might want something a wee bit smaller (and perhaps less expensive)?
@itmusic guitar is limited in a way that... it cannot sound like pipa, and vise versa. i don't know if there's any point to compare between two different instruments.
@ppw8626 Guitar is played by people of nearly every culture and ethnic group, Spain, Latin America, India, Africa, Russia, Brazil, Hawaii, even Cantonese opera music, in their very unique styles and techniques, you name it. While Pipa, have we seen any professional pipa player who is, say, native Spanish or Indian?
@itmusic that is the case with any western instruments, and western clothing, music style, whatsoever. you may think about these words: colonization, invasion, enslavement etc. that's how the western culture becomes seemingly universal, not because it is superior.
@ppw8626 Quite an interesting point of view. But I doubt very much how correct it is. Some say guitar, like Buddhism, is originated from India. Using your logic, Indian has invaded both the east and the west.
@cacalacapoo Pipa is a poor instrument physically. For example, we can hardly find a musical instrument which require the player, if the player wants to watch his left hand playing, tilt his/her head up and down more than 90 degrees and left sideway more than 30 degree. Even worse, the player has to bend its up body left. Many players as a result got back pain and stomach pain. Watch this video again, u know what this message mean.

i agree with you.
ancient Chinese well-educated poets or literators almost played the instruments for their own feelings.
so maybe Chinese music is not as approciate as western music for audiences

@shugyokai why compare with other instruments anyways? this is pipa. 大弦嘈嘈如急雨,小弦切切如私语 is a perfect depiction of pipa's tonal flexibility.
ppw8626 1 year ago
@ppw8626 私语 is the key word/point which hinders the development of Pipa to become a popular instrument

Pipa is limited by:
1 - its weight, too heavy to allow freedom of play
2 - poor workmanship in general, a pipa priced below US100 is very poor in quality, while guitar of the same price is of reasonable quality
itmusic 2 years ago
False, guitars priced below 100 are not playable, so are the pipas. Do you know about pipa? If you don't, it's a waste discussing with you.
