The Ants Go Marching One By One hurrah hurrah The Ants Go Marching Two By Two hurrah hurrah The Ants Go Marching Three By Three The Little One Stops To Climb The Tree...
I played 1st violin in this piece in the full orchestra in high school. I remember drilling the part they have between 2:58-3:10, even tho it starts quite and only comes up slghtly is volumue by end, getting that part finally down was nothing but pure happiness. This was the best performance I think our orchestra had that year and I walked off the sage shaking from the rush. Very fun to play.
The cello (pronounced /ˈtʃɛloʊ/ CHEL-oh; plural cellos or celli) is a bowed string instrument. The word derives from the Italian violoncello. A person who plays a cello is called a cellist. The cello is used as a solo instrument, in chamber music, and as a member of the string section of an orchestra. It is the second largest bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, the double bass being the largest.
Oh cool! I wasn't aware Morton Gould had made an orchestral version of this piece.
I did this piece in 11th grade in my symphonic band, no strings. I was first horn. I loved it so much I wanted my part to sound perfect, especially at 1:38. In my nervousness though I cracked in tone at that part. Twice. Still love the piece though. :3
It's not a sepdectuplet, it's a septuplet. Although there is a sepdectuplet in principal clarinet in Rhapsody in Blue. The septuplet occurs after that eighth notes section at 2:59. Erg, our reseating was on that. Conductor's a jerk, haha
I'm playing Principal Clarinet on this (concert band version, though) right now. Geez, it's tough.....even more so when the section isn't all there....
this is an awesome song! i played in my all county band on timpani... the part was mostly rests but when the timpani did play it was so fun! good job!
i played the english horn solo for this once, but the english horn i had to use (because i'm too poor to have my own.) was so out of tune that it sounded horrible.
Hey that was great. I play tuba in Oroville's Community band and we played that last week . The air force bands nedds to get more tubas. we have four!!!
We're playing this song for our UIL show sometime in spring. Lol, i play trumpet and its pretty hard to get down. Once you get it down though, its pretty easy
The bcl part on this piece has really impossible switches to clarinet (in the orchestra version). I had to play that part and I played some of it an octave up on bass. Very fun piece :)
Many years ago I performed this piece with Morton Gould conducting. In rehearsal, I made a very minor mistake. With drums, woodwind trills, and cymbals all roaring along in a ff section, he noticed. He didn't use a baton, so his hands froze while he tossed a sly smile in my direction. All he said was, "let's try that again." I wanted to crawl under the stage. He told me that he wrote this variation of "Johnny" in about a 24 hour period. He was a true genius.
I think a Bass Clarinet sounds better on the bottom than a 3rd bassoon - fills the sound out. (I'm a bit biased - we are doing this in May and I'm playing the 3rd bassoon on Bass.. )

papalouie27 1 year ago
@papalouie27 It really sounds better to let the bass clarinet play with the bassoons.. they tone blends ... not with a brass tone...
bcdo2na 1 year ago
@papalouie27 Try having the bass clarinet play that part... doesn't need the brass sound on that movement.

But other than that this is my favorite orchestra piece to play.
