Also... it is more difficult to make such battle believably good in a full-bright, well lit city. With darkness you can hide much and reveal on-screen the things you want to reveal, thus making the potential epicness less in the need of humongous resources (time, RAM, etc).
The 7-hour war was/is something legendary... and that makes my imagination reluctant to accept anything below the blowing-your-mind-away-totally level - and I bet I'm not the only one with this attitude.
