@baumblatt11 If you had said "It's not unlimited since there's a time limit on the level" you'd be correct. But you can do this as long as you have time and you can time-out/die and restart level as many times as you like, as long as you get one life. So, it IS pretty unlimited.

I should also point out from my previous comment, the 128+ life death is a bug in the NES version probably due to the NES being unable to handle values about 127. However, this is fixed in SMB All-stars for SNES so it just cuts off at 128 with no death penalty.

The MOS 6502 CPU in the NES is 8 bit and its registers (a, x, y) can handle a decimal value of 255. After that, it wraps to 0. I guess it's signed somehow, so that it handles -127 to 128... Hm, I need to find out.

I think you're correct on the signed value. I guess the only part that is a bug is that there is no handler for the 128 + 1 count, thus game over. Sigh...we sound like nerds...

One caution some people may not know about is if you get more than 128 lives with this trick you will instantly die with a game over. I learned that the hard way a long time ago.

Oh man. I remember people talking about this trick like 20 years ago but never being able to make it work.

The rumor was that you had to hit the koopa while it was in the air dropping to the next step, and the shell would land upside down. People could just make up whatever shit they wanted to back before gamefaqs and the internet.

Yes. This is not an "Glitch" as he claims it to be. It's more of a trick. Since every 10th enemy you can bounce on without touching the ground will grant you an Extra Life, managing to bounce on one shell 10 times will also grant you an Extra Life.

guys, go to 3-9 get the koopa shell in the begginging go to the place where there are two short cannons facing eachother and let go on quickly go on the upper platform watch your lives go.

this is mario 1, buddy. Besides, in Mario 3, the best place to get One Ups is in level 1-2; where there's an unlimited goomba pipe (you just jump on one, flutter to the other, and continue; without hitting the ground).
