  • I like how they placed the cones to ensure you hit the apex on every bend. nice.

  • Hey! goodday sir! I am really interested if there is a place in australia where we can test drive an atom? can anyone help me with this? planning to go to australia this december and plan to test drive one at good cost. thank you very much!

  • Very nice track to learn fast driving!

  • i just bought one now i waiting my goods :)

  • For car as light as the Atom, I think you'd be plenty satisfied with the 4-cylinder VTEC you referred to as "jap crap". For most people, they'd be kidding themselves if they claim the 300hp VTEC is too slow or crappy. The power to weight ratio is insane. The 500hp V8 version is just plan mental. Most of us wouldn't know how to use all that power on anything other than in a straight line.

  • @jrs89 thats true man the best car i drove was a bmw m3 and im honest its easy to drive but ive didnt had balls du press the gas pedal in a bend ;)

but this i think i could make it drive but not more

  • any body try in a 6 r 4

  • I've wanted one since the day I saw the Top Gear review on YouTube.

But I want the Supercharged K20 one not the Ecotec Chevrolet Cobalt Engine crap

  • is this in nz? on the north island?

  • Yeah, just out of Auckland

  • Is the Atom really street-legal?

To be street-legal, an Atom must be built as a kit car That means everything, including the engine is shipped to the owner in pieces. An optional road pack which includes turn signals a horn rear tail lights and headlamps is also available. The owner assembles the car in his own garage being sure to follow all appropriate state mandated vehicle safety guidelines Otherwise the Atom is sold as an off road only vehicle not legal on the highway

  • yep it is in Europe, and I think that European laws concerning street legality are more strict than american ones... custom made shoppers like you see in Orange County are forbidden in Europe, so if the atom is allowed in Europe, I think it's legal everywhere lol

  • Legal in Australia.

  • .is street- legal, but it isn't a kit car

  • It's pretty easy to contact Ariel's North American branch and find out how all that REALLY works..

For the $65, 000 American, I'm pretty sure Ariel builds the damn thing.. Look it up, GordonHatesYouToo.

  • surely you can buy one factory built and ready for the road? if im wrong i´ll gnaw off my left plum.........

  • hello there guys i need some help regarding the price of the atom 2. after long search in the web i was unable to find a steady price(not even in the manufacturer's site). reviewers of the car mentioned prices but without mentioning what extras were fitted with. i need the price with the extra overcharged 300hp engine, the big brakes pack and the windshield, nothing else(in euros or atleast in dollars). thnx anyway

  • 35000 to 70000

  • I'm supposing thats in dollars. Can't you say a more specific price

  • Thai $ 100 000- 500 000, for the exact spec that you want!

  • well im not from Thailand

  • convert it, the rate today is good!

  • what is the difference between atom 1 2 3?

  • i think....

    1 is the 1.6 vtec

    2 is the 2.0 vtec

    3 is the 2.0 supercharged v tec

    engines

  • why is this "video best seen on widescreen TV 16:9"

  • it probably has something to do with the camera used to record like wide screen format record so things now look really skinny on normal

  • Gota admit they shouldve made the cockpit much bigger.

cant stand every sports car being built for short people, with stumpy legs.

  • whats this thing do flat out?

  • 130 on the review from Top Gear. But it does 0-60 in 2.9 seconds.

  • waffle on

  • i sneezed

  • i've always been wanting to drop the engine out of an evo 9 into an exige..small 2 liter straight 4, 400hp..that would be awesome

  • I love my stock 1988 mustang GT convertible

  • My question is why is this car so expensive? You don't even get a windshield. It might as well be a bike with 4 wheels. Why is it 60 grand? Or anywhere close to there. It should be about 20. This is where there needs to be some business competition to bring prices down. This price is ridiculus, even though I like the car.

  • its so expensive because of the amount of work that goes into it. not giving it body panels and a windscreen make it even harder to achieve the astounding statistcs it does. They have to make it comply with british regualtions, n all sorts of shit like that.

And considering it will beat just about everything on the road i thinks its a bargain

  • I'm in business. The cost of this vehicle can't be more than $12k. Making a car comform to regs you do once. Then you just make them as blueprinted. I own 2 businesses and realize you have to make a profit. But, this looks like they need some competition. Then the price will drop in half. Just think of all the parts on a $25k passenger car. There is a lot of cost in those parts. The Atom has very few of those costs. Also, the manufacturer is selling the car, unlike a car dealership.

  • this company is not a mainstream manufacturer. it doesnt have a production line. the company itself only has 6 employees. i very much dout they have a production line. i assume everything is made to order and most is hand built.

except the engine, which they buy from honda, and then fit a supercharer and tune it to 300 hp.

then theres profit, shipping charges, and the tax man will want his cut aswell. But think of it like this, $60'000 will buy you a car that can out drag a ferrari enzo....

  • I saw that in the states they are in Oregon. That's a sales tax free state :) With only a frame, seat, steering, gas, exhaust, suspension, simple wiring, few guages, lights, it should be $25,000 Max. Naw, the reason why it's expensive is what you just said. They have built a car that can outrun and outhandle almost any supercar to 140MPH. And they're BANKING on that. Lotus needs to compete. Just strap a supercharger on the elise & they have the same (better) thing. This Market needs competition.

  • over here it comes with a supercharged Type R engine with 300hp. If you change gear fast enough it will do 0-60 in 2.7 secs n 0-100 in 6.5 secs. its light and nimble so you it handles perfectly. It may "only" do 150ish mph. but how often do you go faster than that on the road?. Lotus have very good cars but for acceleration, they would have to do a lot more than simple "bolt a supercharger on the elise"

  • The Elise is a nice track car, and if you could get 300+hp out of it's 4 banger by supercharging, you'd have a car better then the atom. An slghtly older model maybe a bit slower cause it weights about 750KG (newer 900+kg). But you get a body. You won't get rained on = daily driver. If the Lotus strips down to 700KG or less, I'd take the Lotus for convenience sake. I can't see myself taking out my girl & telling her to strap on the goggles, lol. But the Elise is a beautiful car with nice lines.

  • I wish I could drop a Z06 Vette engine in a Exige

  • YEP! But you'd have to beef the suspension. You see, What everybody fails to realize is, the less weight you have, the less you have to SUSPEND. Thus the less SUSPENSION you need. If you have an Atom that only weighs just over 1000 pounds, you really don't need much of a suspension. Compare that to the Z4M BMW that weighs 3300 pounds (I still don't know how they got all that weight in that tiny car). You need a great suspension, which costs more & usually weighs more.

  • You need to keep the engine as light as possible for a track car cause weight is the biggest killer. More weight usually means that you have to add MORE weight just to balance, suspend, reinforce to hold the power and not brake, etc. Weight is a killer. That's why carts have virually nothing of anything. It's so light. So you want the atom. That's the bomb! But they need to make it with a windshield and a few amenities that don't weigh much.

  • yes i no that. this atom is just an expensive toy, there is no way you'd be able to use it day in, day out. When you consider wot ur getting though its fantastic. I out accelerates just about everything.

if i was going to go with a louts. id start off with the exige. but even with its 1800cc vvc toyota engine its just not in the same league. Not only that its not that much better to live with, only keeping your head dry and the windscreen are the only plus points compared to the atom.

  • ha ha that would be f-ing sweet. scary fast

  • All that you say is why these cars should come in under $30K. Low overhead low price, speed4mike is right.

The Aptera people say their 3 wheel car will be under $25K. That car goes 0-60 in about 8 seconds, runs 90mph+ AND gets 250mpg+ with a diesel/electric powertrain. Truly a car for the masses like VW is, only better.

  • haha, the only problem is you have to live with the embarrisment of driving a 3 wheeled car.

its been done before and as a concept its perfect, but it lacks 2 improtant factors in a car, taste and style

  • the Aptera looks kickass awesome

  • WTF, it looks like a squashed bubble. you must be clinically insane if you thing that is a pheasable alternative to the conventional car

  • We are talking about looks. You're saying that if I disagree with what you think looks appealing visually I am clinically insane?

  • i suppose your right, as they say "each to his own" i personally can not see how anyone could look at that and think its a good looking car.

  • @redbeast2 Looking at any 3 wheeled car and saying "it looks great" is in the same league as looking at a down syndrome in a beauty pageant and saying "that chicks hotter then all the others, shes got something special going on". Great concept if it can do all those stats but lets just hope they sell it with a bag to cover your head so nobody knows you own one.

  • @myjizzureye

Lol ok so you don't like its appearance but I do.

  • @myjizzureye wow is one of businesses spending all day coming up "funny stuff" to say? real classy making fun of down syndrome. let me guess one of your other businesses is a failed comedian right? and its got four wheels ass.

  • @insulatedmemory I haven't got the slightest clue what you just said. Learn English and then have another go.

  • @myjizzureye wow...your right that made no sense. i shall refrain from commenting while drunk

  • That's fine if you think it's ugly. It's only your problem that you're missing out.

  • haha. trust me im not missing out. not only does it look ridiculous, but its impractical and slow.

its just another gimmik which a few people will buy and then we'll all forget about it.

  • Yes. Impractical and slow..You do realise that this machine is capable of 1-60 mph in UNDER 3 seconds if you can change gear fast enough. Now thats a slow car for you.

Honestly, this is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen, for so many reasons.

Impractical? Yes..but who the fuck cares? A bike isn't practical either, but you still see tons of those on the road, and this thing is so much better than bikes in so many ways. Tbh this IS a bike on 4 wheels

  • hang on.....

im not talking about the ariel atom here im talking about that stupid 3 wheeler : aptera .

some dickheads ar tryin to compare that ghastly bubble thing to the atom. wich as you quoted clarkson is one of the most beautifle cars ever partly because its so elegant but also because its such a wonderful piece of engineering

  • hahahahahahaha!!! puddin1001 thinks this is slow!! i challenge him to find a cart that is much faster in a straight line AND round corners!! Also i challeneg him to find a car that is anywhere near as fast that is as affordable as the atom!!!! haha

  • FFS read on dick head. im not talking about the atom. some twat earlyer was talking about a stupid 3 wheeler: aptera.

thats what that comment is refering to.....

if you would have read other comments i have posted you would see that im actually defending the atom cos it is fucking awsum

  • WTF you say 0-60 in 8 secs like its good.

sure good mpgs but i want good mpg from the the family runabout.

for a weekend toy i couldnt give 2 shits. aslong as its its got performance and puts a smile on my face that'll do for me.

and i wont get that from the aptera

  • err..bs. ever heard of economies of scale? this is not a mass-produced vehicle. it uses bespoke parts, there is no platform-sharing. no loss-leader, no halo car - it's just this. as others have said this is a bargain for the $-performance ratio.

  • @speed4mike Yeah I own 4 businesses and none of them are custom car manufacturing. Therefore I feel I am fully qualified to converse in detail about just how much it costs to produce a hand made super car. There is no way at all I come off sounding like a brainless fuckwit with a stick up my ass talking about shit I should probably just keep my mouth shut on.

  • Ok its only 60 grand with a ton of extras you DONT need to enjoy this car on the track it starts around 25/27k but your getting a b16 honda motor instead of a ka20. with a few inexpensive honda tweeks and the introduction of a vetch head and ecu you could have a fun car for around 30k. Me id try and get one w/o engine im and old honda fan and a ls/vetec swap would be fun in this car (b18 block b16 head had a integra with that swap done 3k work of engine work and it threw you into the headrest

  • OK after looking at ariels website after not being back there for awhile I see they no longer offer the base BASE package they did with the atom2 that kit was on around 25 or 27k with a 1.6 liter b16 engine. If the new base line kits come with a ka20 (honda type R's and 2008 civic si engines) this really detracks from the car when the model previous cost around 78l FULLY loaded i think its time ariel got some competetion to bring them back down to earth.

  • its VTEC... not vtech, or vetec or any other stupid name... VTEC!!! and since your an old honda fan you might know that...

and theyre in the midst of a ariel 500... a small V8 with 500 hp... thatll be insane... as it wasnt already with 300 hp.

  • The dealer is in Oregon and the 300hp one goes for $68,000 base. Its a little bit wider to meet US regulations for public road use. And it has a 2.0 GM Ecotec engine supercharged, produces the same amount of hp but a bit more torque, and according to Car and Driver is just as smooth in delivery as the Honda. But if you want you could still get the Type R engine, thats the only option available.

  • I beleive this demo car came to grief at this track (Pukekohe Raceway).

At 4:54 of this video the car is heading uncomfortably close to the grass. Was this the begining of the end?

  • 29k british pounds so roughly 40k dollars

  • this is old one..with honda civic engin..the new one with Type R engin which is more power and faster!

  • Prices start at under £20000

  • This one is the 22ohp version, so no supercharger. I've driven it and it was awesome!

  • the sport is 50,000

  • that car is sweet.

  • where did the supercharger go?

at least i don't hear it

  • they dont all have one. that is an option

  • on top gear i couldv'e swore they said 40,000$?

  • Actually, they meant 40,000 British pounds. It confuses the best of us. The supercharged version, I'm roughly guessing, may add up to over $90,000, plus having it imported to America. :(

  • the superchraged one costs 29k pounds in britan, thats around 40k$. there is a dealer in the states but i forgot his name and where hes located. just search the net and im sure youll find it.

  • Very cool! How much does one cost?
