simple, A) this new stuff could help with that B) these people aren't trained in medicine, they're trained in ocean based sciences, you can't just transfer across fields, so stopping them would be useless, also, at our current rate, we could end up having to expand into the ocean, or into space, nice to know about both oh and C) its interesting
