Funny story about that. MacArthur wasn't supposed to walk ashore like that. He was supposed to walk ashore dry via temporary unloading pier but the 'Beachmaster' in charge of the beach ordered the boat carrying MacArthur away as unloading supplies/troops had highest priority.
Hence, MacArthur wasn't quite happy when he did walk ashore at that moment...
CMDR turned towards the enemy ships without any orders. He knew by instinct as soon as he became aware of the enemy that he had to attack as soon as possible to protect the CVEs.
