  • This was delicate and beautiful. My day has been made. Thank you so much!

  • You dont have you table on this video!!

  • Despite the upbeat tone in the original song, the lyrics to it are actually pretty sad. Your version is a great reflection of that! Very well done!!

  • I heard Sukiyaki for the first time today, so I searched under the proper name. Imagine my delight to find a version by the Singing Sunflower. :D

This is really, really beautiful, Laura. Thanks for sharing.

  • honestly, I think people dislike videos like this just to be the only one (or few) to dislike it. stop it.

  • I lived in Japan for almost three years, and I'm getting old now, but I can clearly remember the people. Back then, I was a corpsman for the Marine Corps. My command asked me if I wanted to go to Japan, and I said, "No." So they sent me... Serenity, intellect, sensitivity, these are all qualities that your people possess in greater abaundance than is to be found anywhere else on earth, and I've been around enough to know. I'm sorry for your loss, Ms. Shigihara. We all lost that day.

    -Alexander

  • Just beautiful. Thanks so much!

  • Juts beautiful. Thanks so much!

  • Love your rendition of this classic... You gave it a more subdued and fragile character appropriate for this tragedy. You should sell this as an MP3 on your website where proceeds go to the relief effort! I'd buy it.

  • Hi Laura. Thank you for your beautiful song. Japanese are encouraged and healed very much by your gentle voice.

  • Very sweet!

  • very beautiful... i remember hearing this song in Sukoshi Ga ongaeshi ga dekita kana (if i weren't wrong).. really touching song...

  • Thank you, Laura, for this beautiful piece of love and inspiration!

    Let's all PRAY for Japan!!

  • To everyone who is reading this, please spend even a minute to pray for the lost one’s in the earthquake especially Laura’s relatives and friends. Your prayers would really make a difference. Even the most silent and shortest prayer would be heard. And Laura, don’t worry, God would do something about it. God kept them safe within his mighty hands and you would see them soon. So cheer up! Give all those worries and sorrows to Jesus because I’m pretty sure that they are safe. God Bless You!

  • @TheSoothsayer123 what an inconsequent comment

  • @TheSoothsayer123 Added irony. The original singer of this song, Sakamoto Kyu, died tragically in an airplane crash.

  • I couldn't understand the words, but it was so beautiful melodically that I was really moved. My heart goes out to Japan.

    Thank you for sharing...

  • Very Beautiful song. Its incredible that you have the strength to encourage those in japan in a time like this. I haven't heard from my friends in japan but this gave me hope. Thanks Laura!

  • Rise up, Japan. o/.

  • My friend sent me this link and I listened to MUSIC first time after the earthquake. Even during the black out, I had plenty time to pick up one of my favorite music in my iPod but hesitated to do so. I was afraid of being sort of offended by the tune.

But your song does not. Thank you, Laura,

  • Great cover of a classic song! Beautiful voice as always.

  • ご親戚全員と、早く連絡が取れる良いですね。 You'll soon get in touch with all your relatives, I hope.

  • part 2:

    Remembering those happy autumn days

    But tonight I'm all alone

Sadness is in the shadow of the stars

Sadness is in the shadow of the moon

I look up when I walk

    So the tears won't fall

Though my heart is filled with sorrow

    For tonight I'm all alone

  • English translation part 1: I look up when I walk So the tears won't fall Remembering those happy spring days But tonight I'm all alone I look up when I walk Counting the stars with tearful eyes Remembering those happy summer days But tonight I'm all alone Happiness lies beyond the clouds Happiness lies above the sky I look up when I walk So the tears won't fall Though my heart is filled with sorrow For tonight I'm all alone (whistling)

Note, though, that the title says "no" instead of "o"/"wo".

  • When I first saw the news about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the first person who sprang to my mind was... Laura Shigihara. The Japanese gamer/singer that I respect most. I'll keep your family in my prayers.
