I think when the console was made, they didn't put all consideration into the machine and it only falls into a misconception. The PS3 also only has 256MB of memory for hard drive and 256MB for blu ray and Skyrim is massive containing mammoths and astonishing nature. Spells, combat and magic all fit into one game and I think PS3 needed two discs for it.

If you got the PS3 because it has better graphics than Xbox, then that was a bad idea, as you can upgrade your computer for the same amount of money to play this game beautifully. BUT Xbox does run into this problem, but only after more than six, seven hours of hardcore magic and fighting and stuff like that. PS2 is better than original

@OffroadMachine115 Air has nothing to do with the lag. It's a memory leak. The game starts swapping memory chunks. That's why quitting and restarting it goes mostly away. Supposed to be patched in 1.4
If you allready tried to restart your console and it's still laggy, try to turn off auto-save. I did that after I experienced lag and freeze, and now I have no trouble.

Your HDD are corrupted ... simply back up your personal stuff and format your HDD ... problem solved. Now If you don't believe me Try any other game that usually are both installed HDD/Br and look at the game how much he is messed up .
For my part , the corruption started with PACMAN HD ... the installation corrupted my HDD then nothing was playable ( Jumping sounds, BIG LAGS With in any games )
I think the problems that people get with the game isn't due to the game itself, but rather the excessively long play sessions taking their toll on the console, which in turn affects the game. I play this on an old 360 with no (HDMI slot it is that old) and it seems to function well most of the time: problems happen when the console has been on too long. Just saying maybe we should do something else with some of our spare time rather than sit for 24+ hours like zombies in front of a console.
I do have to say, in all honesty, that because of the scale of this game, there are quite a few bugs that probably couldn't have been accounted for prior to release. Clipping issues (falling through mountains!!), floating characters, towns not loading properly... these are all problems I've had with my game. It's a tough thing to nail down. I don't know if the PS3 and 360 is quite up to the task of running a game like SkyRim. Hopefully the next gen systems can hack it=)
According to the Bethesda's blog there is a second patch currently in the testing faze of development. One of the fixes is the performance issue involved with long term play. They want to submit it for approval by the end of January.
@shadow45677 In the game when you press select you have the option to wait for a period of time up to 24 hours. Waiting for 30 days, as arduous as it is, is a pretty surefire way of stopping the world from overloading with the aftermath of various quests and quest lines.
When ever i try to play ths game, the game wont load half the map area and theres just floating trees and then i fall through the map. Also, whenever i try to enter cities that you have to walk through a gte to get to (Windhelm,Riften,etc.) i fall through the map and die. also the gaurd outside whiterun thats supposed to let you in does not spawn for me. Any idea whats going on?
PS3 is so powerful they are creating another console. Sorry if it was that good why not keep improving dev tools and make it easier to code for so they can harness the sheer "POWER".

When I finally got Skyrim, I had AC II, AC: Brotherhood and Red Dead Redemption saves on my PS3, so I thought: Nah, fuck it, I want to play Skyrim the fullest. So I deleted those saves, and now I only have Skyrim, and it plays smoothly. Had some problems before I removed all the autosaves. Only update I'm looking for is for activating weaponracks. I have a shitload of cool weapons in my home, in a chest.
And this is why PC is DOMINATE. If this shit were to happen on a pc you could just look up a fix for it, instead of waiting 2 months on an update lol plus pc graphics are 3x better

its because you need a cooling system for your ps3 you probably played for a few hours to many witch heats up the system so if you get the cooler you can play it just fine as long as you want
this happened to me on my xbox a couple of times. i just quit to the main menu and reloaded my save and it worked again. happened in a dwemer ruin during the final thieves guild quest.
@Dyrdekification Yeah I agree, it's ridiculous that a massive game studio like Bethesda couldn't properly optimise the game for the console with the best specs. There really should've been quality control measures in place, but I guess, we've got to play the hand we've been dealt.
Disable auto save and overwrite older saves. I haven't had this issue while playing on my system.But i do find that the system gets overwhelmed by multiples of the larger characters like mammoths dragons and giants on screen at one time.When this happens my system shuts down altogether or freezes.its to be expected with a game like this.save and back up your game saves often. This game is reported to be a console killer.
Let me explain. The 360 has 2 memory pools, both for data AND video. The PS3 has 2 memory pools, ONE for video and ONE for data. Once one of these has run out of memory, the game gets choppy. On the 360 these combine much better. PC, well, no need to explain that. It'll be very hard, if not impossible, to fix this.
At the moment i don't have a pc that can run this game, and i wont be able to afford one for a while either. Sucks so bad that Bethsda can't program it for the consoles...
@vafaneh Skyrim was programmed for consoles. Which is the reason the vanilla textures look like crap and we have half the graphic potential of this game's engine.
Since Bethesda haven't released a patch that actually patches this, here are a few temporary fixes:
Disable Autosaves: This is the easiest fix and works well for about 10-20 hour after the game gets choppy.
Wait for 30 days (in-game): A lot of stuff is happening in Skyrim as you play, especially the aftermath to guild quests and the main quest, so waiting for 30 days gives the game world a chance to "settle".
And leave stuff as you found it (doors, item placement etc)

@geert574 the graphics on xbox are fine as long as you play from the disc and not install it, i have experienced some lag when i'm in a dungeon on the 360 version but it isn't as bad as the ps3.
to fix lag in skyrim on ps3: delete all the saves except your current save whenever the total save data size is over 6mb, the lag should stop once you load your latest save. to keep the framerate at this rate, disable autosaves completely. if you want to have a stable framerate but you find autosaves convenient for you, just keep them on but make sure you delete all the past saves whenever you start to experience a bit of lag. thumbs up if you found this helpful.
um i think the reason you have a little lag is because you have too much game data buy a new one im guessing that you wont have any lag cause would you think the porformance of the ps3 would be decent with out any lag without any game data
issues aren't just with ps3 lag has been found on all platforms after 40+ hours of gameplay ps3 is just worse because of the graphics memory limitations , and in ALL honesty ps3 is better hardware than xbox any day of the week, the ONLY problem I've ever had with my games or console has been skyrim whereas I've seen legions of friends go through 4 or 5 xbox's since the original 360 came out and those are just the lucky ones.

The PS3 has a segregated 256 MB of VRAM and 256MB of main RAM. The Xbox 360 just has both segments of ram together in one 512MB chunk. Equivalent.
The PS3's processor is amazingly superior to the Xbox's. No competition.
The only up the Xbox has a small bit of eDRAM which works wonders for upscaling and anti-aliasing. Since the PS3 doesn't have this, it has to waste power elsewhere.
Skyrim SHOULD work on PS3. Bethesda didn't try, and they fucked up.
your ps3 is to hot, let it cool down so it should work like it has to.. but its better to play on pc cuz of its better graphics and you can mod.... and many more ;) it saves also alot of faster!
duh i have a ps3 and my game is perfectly fine and im in level 72 and to fix the lag all you got to do is delete all the save data that you dont nedd and just keep one skyrim save slot and dont delete the one with the dragon picture and it says skyrim because that will erase the game of your data

(but obsidian did fallout nv, so they suck more).

@TehKirzickah my 500 euro rig can run this game and any current game at maxed settings. The graphix of the game could be so much more better, but it is dumbed down because consoles wouldnt be able to handle. The only reason you can play a game with close to PC quality is the fact there are more console owners than PC owners around so developers have to makegames that run primarily on consoles. Wanna see a console handling Crysis with maxed DX11 graphix and live to tell about it.
just delete unwanted saves, disable the autosave feature.. and the lag is gone ( the lag is caused by accumulated autosaves after long hours (usually 40+) of play.. no patch is necessary once you know the cause of the problem (save data)

this happened to me on my xbox a couple of times. i just quit to the main menu and reloaded my save and it worked again. happened in a dwemer ruin during the final thieves guild quest.

Disable auto save and overwrite older saves. I haven't had this issue while playing on my system.But i do find that the system gets overwhelmed by multiples of the larger characters like mammoths dragons and giants on screen at one time.When this happens my system shuts down altogether or freezes.its to be expected with a game like this.save and back up your game saves often. This game is reported to be a console killer.

Let me explain. The 360 has 2 memory pools, both for data AND video. The PS3 has 2 memory pools, ONE for video and ONE for data. Once one of these has run out of memory, the game gets choppy. On the 360 these combine much better. PC, well, no need to explain that. It'll be very hard, if not impossible, to fix this.

Since Bethesda haven't released a patch that actually patches this, here are a few temporary fixes:
Disable Autosaves: This is the easiest fix and works well for about 10-20 hour after the game gets choppy.
Wait for 30 days (in-game): A lot of stuff is happening in Skyrim as you play, especially the aftermath to guild quests and the main quest, so waiting for 30 days gives the game world a chance to "settle".
And leave stuff as you found it (doors, item placement etc)

to fix lag in skyrim on ps3: delete all the saves except your current save whenever the total save data size is over 6mb, the lag should stop once you load your latest save. to keep the framerate at this rate, disable autosaves completely. if you want to have a stable framerate but you find autosaves convenient for you, just keep them on but make sure you delete all the past saves whenever you start to experience a bit of lag. thumbs up if you found this helpful.

issues aren't just with ps3 lag has been found on all platforms after 40+ hours of gameplay ps3 is just worse because of the graphics memory limitations , and in ALL honesty ps3 is better hardware than xbox any day of the week, the ONLY problem I've ever had with my games or console has been skyrim whereas I've seen legions of friends go through 4 or 5 xbox's since the original 360 came out and those are just the lucky ones.

The PS3 has a segregated 256 MB of VRAM and 256MB of main RAM. The Xbox 360 just has both segments of ram together in one 512MB chunk. Equivalent.
The PS3's processor is amazingly superior to the Xbox's. No competition.
The only up the Xbox has a small bit of eDRAM which works wonders for upscaling and anti-aliasing. Since the PS3 doesn't have this, it has to waste power elsewhere.
Skyrim SHOULD work on PS3. Bethesda didn't try, and they fucked up.

@gollapr yes, i left that out, sorry. but also, i have 1 main save and 3 auto save. All of them are 13mb so i should start getting that freaking lag (but for some reason i don't). Also, when i played fallout nv, i start to get epic lag-ness at 10mb saves and i think i quit playing that game at 16mb. So yes, bethesda doesn't do a well job on ps3. (but obsidian did fallout nv, so they suck more).

@TehKirzickah my 500 euro rig can run this game and any current game at maxed settings. The graphix of the game could be so much more better, but it is dumbed down because consoles wouldnt be able to handle. The only reason you can play a game with close to PC quality is the fact there are more console owners than PC owners around so developers have to makegames that run primarily on consoles. Wanna see a console handling Crysis with maxed DX11 graphix and live to tell about it.

just delete unwanted saves, disable the autosave feature.. and the lag is gone ( the lag is caused by accumulated autosaves after long hours (usually 40+) of play.. no patch is necessary once you know the cause of the problem (save data)

I dont think so, this lagg isssue its caused by a large savefile I mean if you have a 3mb savefile shouldnt be so bad, but when you accumulate hours and hours of game time the game is almst unplayable, and every single console and game is the same shit, so stop saying that "your ps3 is right" because that is not posible, you won't say that when u reach to lvl 35 with 30 or 40 hours of gameplay....I'v expend 60 dollars on it and it doesnt work properly, its broken :/

And the motherboard MSI ofcourse around 200$ we are already at 550.. Then the shell ( I dont know what to call it ) 150$ we are already at 700$ and we only have 3 things and a PC needs 7, Graphics card, motherboard, powersupply, shell, ram, processor and then ofcourse a hard drive which is really expensive now adays because of the crisis in japan...
