  • forget TV show

    youtube are way superior now

if you know how to find good video

  • These are great teachings. I'd like to know where to get the manual chopper you used on the apples...thanks!

  • Could you do a video on rehydrating and ways to use the dehydrated food? Thanks!

  • Just as good as Part 1

  • what kind of lemon juice though?

  • Tammy, have you attempted to dehydrate avocados? I know it probably sounds a bit nuts to attempt it but my hubby has a stomach problem and has to eat avocados. I would like to buy a whole bunch when it's on a great sale ($.44-$.98 each), but am afraid of it spoiling before he gets through them all. Sometimes the prices are just ridiculously high (i.e $1.98-$2.50 each), and then I won't buy any.

  • I don't have a meat slicer. I checked my food processor and the slices are really thin!

What size do you cut most things? a quarter of an inch?

  • Thanks!

  • I am confused about how long to steam things.

  • Interesting stuff...but, one detail, you mention hygiene, and you wear the gloves, which is fine. However, not to seem overly critical, but I would hope that when you are working in the kitchen just for yourself and not for demonstration purposes, that you wear a hairnet. I notice several times during the video that you keep pushing your hair out of the way with your gloved hands, which totally defeats the purpose of the gloves. (sorry, this is a peeve of mine. 6.5 years in restaurant biz)

  • can only add to what many of the comments have said, this is a brilliant series, im a prepper with lots of prepper friends, will be recommending your channel.

  • Hi #UN#, Let's stay in touch with my vlog channel ! Feel free to Subscribe, Like, Comment, and make Favorite to @ciciliciousnyc! <3

  • I am new at dehydrating, I put a bunch of 1/4 in banana slices in the dehydrator and after 12 hours they were like leather, any tips?? Thanks !!

  • @Sudhira

At my web site Dehydrate2store. com I have a tip section that will help answer many questions.

If you use bananas that are a little on the green side, spray with lemon juice, use stainless steal knifes ( I like using a meat slicer so everything is cut the same thickness) you will have a crisper banana chip. Remember, the older the fruit the higher the sugar content and more pliable the food. Hope I have helped. Tammy

  • Thanks folks. I have just started preparing my own hiking meals and your advice has taught me lots of new tricks and also the pitfalls to avoid. Thanks for the easy to understand tutorials. Also I love all your labour saving devices. Must get me an apple peeler a.s.a.p!

  • Very helpful and informative. Answered many questions, some of which I would not have thought of until it would have already been too late. Thank you so much!

  • I enjoyed your videos on dehydrating. They have a lot of information.

  • Help, I bought some bags for vaccum packing in. I went with the thicker ones and the carrots and sweet potatoes seem to be pocking holes in the bag and I am losing my vacuum. Do you do anything special to keep the food from being so sharp and ruining bags? I was thinking not vacuuming so tight.

  • I like your hygiene suggestions but you kept touching your hair with the gloved hands!!!!

  • Does a convection oven work or is a dehydrator absolutely necessary?

  • @LuxAuterna My oven actually has a "drying" cycle/function (it's convection also). It uses the fan and has a magnet that props the oven door open for circulation. That is what I use. It also depends on if your oven has setting that go low enough, 100 - 125*

  • I have a round dehydrater. Not the excalibur type? will it still work well?

  • I LOVE TH IS SERIES!! THANK YOU!!

  • oh wait you're not cutting on a counter top. what material are you using as a cutting board?

  • I'm so skiddish watching you with a knife. I'm just waiting to watch you lose a finger. the tip of the knife is suppose to be used as a fulcrum and the length for cutting plus you're cutting right onto your counter tops. Your videos are quite informative and very helpful just be careful with that knife. I would suggest watching a knife handling video on here

  • Hi Dehydrate2Store,

I have eczema so, preparation of veg' I really like but, it hurts especially with the acid type foods.

I live alone so the food I will dehydrate will perhaps be stored longer than normal. Because of this, can I keep the dehydrated stuff in a freezer in plastic bags?

I have started to wear gloves for prep' also.

  • when you dehydrate and the juice is out can u drink the juice...?

i don't use chemical for cleaning anything i just boil water would that be safe ?

  • do you spray the lemons with lemon juice i forget?

  • Sure would like to know what vegetable chopper that is.....cant find it anywhere :(

  • why do you dehydrate frozen food? Why don't you just keep it frozen? thanks

  • @33Triple3Threat33 I believe she said that dehydrated food lasts much much lounger.

  • @33Triple3Threat33 when the power goes off you eat the frozen food or watch it rot if its dehydrated you do nothing.

  • I peal eggplant, squash and zucchini before cooking them so wouldn't I need to peel dehydrating them?

  • Hey Tammy, great videos btw. I have a question about tame blackberries. I raise about 200 quarts every summer and sell most of them by the road side and was interested in dehyrating some. Do they hold there form pretty well after rehydrated or are they all mushy? Thanks

  • thanks. Can you do one on meat?

  • i have a question, i bought a cheap food dehydrator and for corn, if the holes in the tray are too big, is there a way to use something like cheap screen?

  • Hi magicster123

I have been told by some of my viewers that craft stores have plastic food friendly screens. Another place is a kitchen supply stores such as Bed Bath and beyond. Make sure you do not use metal screens of any kind they can heat up and burn your food. Hope I have helped. Tammy

  • @Dehydrate2store In my booklet it says, "If needed, clean cheesecloth can be spread on the trays to prevent food pieces from sticking or falling through." thank you for these videos, so glad I found them! I will start this week for the first time dehydrating. Great help, your videos. Do you have a list of what should be sprayed with lemon juice, what not to be sprayed. Also what needs to be steamed and what doesn't. I will check out your site. Nice to see you wearing gloves!

  • @magicster123 Cheesecloth might work.

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • Sorry, didn't realize your video was in multiples, so my previous question asking about shopping in stores is answered! Now, I need a dehydrator! I am excited to start! Thank you for a VERY informative post!

  • Ascorbic acid.

  • Hi Tammy...

Enjoyed your videos. Very informative. Is it possible to dehydrate meats such as hamburger, chicken, or pork?

  • Hi Tammy, thank you sooo much for your great tips! As a student living on a budget; working to support my self and pay tuitions. Your tips are a life saver! We are expecting more tricks from you and great new recipes. God bless you!

  • Pretty lady, cute face, and good info!! Keep it coming!

  • Tammy do you have a video about dehydrating canned food?

  • I think I have watched every one of your videos at least twice! You have really inspired me. I already had an Excalibur and I use it but never quite knew how to used the dehydrated food. I hope you do more cooking videos. I am an avid canner and already have tons of filled jars. Now I have to find space to store tons of dehydrated food too! By the way, where did you get your lemon juice with the sprayer?

Thank you so much for all the videos!

  • She just put a sprayer on the lemon juice bottle

  • I bought a spray bottle at the Dollar Tree, and the nozzle fit perfectly on my bottle of lemon juice!

  • Thanks for the tip!

  • Thanks Tammy, Have another question, Have you ever done wild blackberries? Is the time of year. They are smaller than tame ones, Seeds are a lot smaller

  • Hi Gardeninggirl,

I have done blackberries from a berry farm only. You want to make sure only rinse the berries right before your ready to dehydrate. Place on paper towels to get them as dry as possible, mist with lemon juice. Then throw them on the dehydrator. I would think the same would apply to the wild ones. let me know how they turn out. Tammy

  • Tammy what about greenbeans, Can you just put them on the tray right out of the can? Thanks

  • Hi KYGardeninggirl,

Yes, you can. IF they are frozen from the store just place them on the dehydrator frozen and this is the same for all other frozen vegetables and can vegetables. Tammy

  • Tammy, Thanks for the great videos. Just got an Excalibur and have been enjoying it. I just dried a load of Rhubarb. Now.. How do you use it in recipes? And would you reconstitute it first before making a Rhubarb crisp? Waiting for your new website. Joni

  • Hi Joni,

Use one part boiling water to one part cut rhubarb. Pour the boiling water over the rhubarb and let it stand for about 10-15 min. Then use it in your recipe. You do not have to steam it before dehydrating. However, if you are making a puree or rollups then you should steam it first. Tammy

  • Hi Tammy. Thanks for making your videos. I've had a bunch of bananas in an Excalibur dehydrator for 38 hours at 105 degrees and they are still aren't 'crispy dry' like your bananas. How do you get them so dry?

  • What kind of food steamer do you have?? Thank you--GGGGREAT videos.

  • I am so glad I found your videos! I just got my excalibur a week or two ago and was thinking someone needs to write a book of 101 recipes, you seem to have done it here with your videos. I love youtube, it makes life so much easier! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!!!

  • Tammy... do you process your celery before dehydrating?

  • Hi cypressgal,

No, just cut it up and place it on the tray. Even 1/2 inch chucks will dehydrate with out any problem. I use a ton of celery, I even dehydrate the leaves.

    Stay in touch,

    Tammy

  • I was wondering what kind of apple peeler you have. I found some on eBay that look like yours but before I buy I just wanted to make sure they are all kinda the same or is there a certain brand I should buy? Thanks. P.S. Bought my Excalibur today. Cant wait for shipment. Great videos, you should sell a DVD.

  • Hi eddiepeay,

I purchased one of my apple peeler from Bed Bath and Beyond. It was 19.00 and it works great. The counter mount one I have was a little more money and I like that one just as much. I would say as long as they are metal and not plastic.

Thank you for watching and it you have anymore questions, I'm here.

    Tammy

  • Tammy,

Thanks...I will try that next time.

    Beth

  • Tammy...I dehydrated mushrooms the other day. They were already sliced. All I did was wash them and put them on the tray, but they are all gray and black. I dehydrated on 120. Why are yours still white? I rehydrated some today when I made chilli and they looked the same. They were edible, but I want to see if I can improve anything. Any ideas?

  • Hi cypressgal,

Yes, I know what happened. When you purchased the sliced mushrooms ( like I do) they are already washed and cleaned. You never want to wash the mushrooms before dehydrating. Just take the sliced ones from the package and dump them on the tray. If they are whole then wipe off with a damp cloth and cut with a stainless steal knife. I am sorry, I need to be more detailed when I do my videos. I will keep trying to improve them. If you have any other questions, I'm here. Tammy

  • Where can I buy those Oxygen pack's for the canning jars? Awesome.... :)

  • @homeismn Just google oxygen absorbers. Ebay, amazon, many websites have them. 100 cc for the jars. And don't expose them to air for long, put them into a jar fast. They only keep for about 6 months I believe. They are good for long term storage especially. Another way to go is the vacuum jar sealer, if you have a Food Saver. Or if you get one make sure it has that attachment (port hole and tubing). It sucks the air out of the jar.

  • Tammy has amazing knowledge....Her clips are very informative. Listen to what she is saying and believe her when she says there's a freight train coming.

  • you should have your own TV show. Your great.

  • Awesome info! Thanks!

  • just add water and a meal ready!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much.

i got all the can food now, and ready for this project.

  • what if i don't use commercial products for cleaning, could i still use vinegar or peroxide to sanitize or even an eco-friendly brand of sanitizer?? i am an enviromentally conscious type of person

  • You can use what ever works for you. In long term storage hygiene is important in maintaining the quality of the food. This is also true when canning. I think its great that your are earth friendly and more people should be. Unfortunately, I own several apartments and when some people move out it requires complete sterilization. And Clorox is my secrete weapon

  • Great stuff, that's why I made my video's too!

  • Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I hope you have time to expand on storage and cooking with dried food as well.

    Great video

  • How long is dehydrated food good for? how long does it take to spoil?

  • Can be good up to 5-30 years or more depending what it is and if it is stored properly. Watch my next video parts (i will upload them today) to learn how to store properly

  • Thank you for uploading! I found this extremely helpful.

  • This also deserves a peter schiff tag!?

  • i mention him and the economy in PART 3, it just hasn't gotten up yet :-/. The series uses the same tags
